A busy night of first division action sees three games and two of them will have a huge bearing on first place in the division. First placed Limerick and second placed Shamrock Rovers are both in action away from home and both will be hoping to go into the World Cup break on top.

Athlone Town vs Cobh Ramblers

Athlone Town and Cobh are level on points in the middle of the first division.

Athlone games haven't been big on goals to date this season and their ten games have produced a total of just nine goals, five for and four against.

Despite a good league run, Cobh were knocked out of the FAI Cup last weekend at the hands of Dundalk but are unbeaten in their last five league games.

Eric Lavine and Noel McGee are suspended for Athlone but Cobh too have suspension problems with David Breen, Darren Cummins and Kevin Murray all suspended although Shane Barrett is back from a one game ban.

Galway United may be third in the first division, four points behind Rovers, but last weekend manager Stephen Lally quit the club after their FAI Cup loss against Athlone. By the way if anyone's interested in managing a League of Ireland club contact Nick Leeson regarding the position.

Galway played out a 0-0 draw with the Hoops earlier in the year and it's as close as anyone has gotten to halting Rovers with the Hoops still unbeaten in all three competitions.

Barry Prenderville is added to the Rovers squad after signing for them recently. Ian Maher is suspended for the Dublin side but Galway too have to plan without Ciaran Foley who is banned.

Jimmy Fullam is suspended for Monaghan who despite taking Dublin City to extra-time in the second round of the FAI Cup, have lost their last six league games. Robbie Horgan, Eddie Keyes and Robbie Smith could all miss out injured for the bottom side. Shane Harte is suspended after his sending off in the cup loss.

Limerick are still top of the first division and got the result of the round to eliminate holders Drogheda United from the FAI Cup on Monday night.

Preview: UCD v Derry City

Derry City have top spot in their sights and four points from their remaining two games before the World Cup break will be enough for at least a share of the lead for nearly three weeks. They will be hoping for another win against UCD, which would mark their fifth consecutive win over the College.

UCD haven't been spectacular this season but they did get through the second round of the FAI Cup with a win over Kilkenny last weekend and they will be looking to improve on their current standing of ninth.

Derry eased past Blarney in the cup last week and are now unbeaten in eleven games since their shock loss to Dublin City was followed by a defeat to Glentoran which would prove costly in the Setanta Sports Cup.

UCD should be at full strength for the game but four defeats from their last five league games means they won't be overly confident going into a game against legitimate title challengers.

Mark McChrystal could continue in place of the injured Ken Oman although McChrystal is still on the transfer list at his own request. Pat McCourt is an injury doubt and Stephen Kenny may opt not to risk him anyway.

Preview: Shelbourne v Bray Wanderers
While Shelbourne have struggled at the seaside since Bray's return to the top flight, they have had no such problems from the Seagulls in their two meetins at Tolka Park. Two 2-2 draws at the Carlisle Grounds is weighed against 4-1 and 5-0 wins for Shels.

Two wins from their two remaining games before the World Cup break would assure Shelbourne of at least a share on points of pole position. They will be expected to ease past Bray at Tolka Park tonight too.

Bray's last league game, produced their first win of the season, a 1-0 win against Longford. Since then they had an unconvincing replay win to put them into round three of the FAI Cup. A draw tonight would be a good result for them.

Shels are again near full strength and manager Pat Fenlon may switch things around with the game against Derry on Tuesday night looming. Jim Crawford, Jamie Harris and Greg O'Halloran are Shels only injury absentees.

Wesley Charles is suspended for Bray.

Preview: Waterford United v St. Patrick's Athletic

Waterford United are the only team in the league without a win but they did take a break from the struggle last weekend wih a 5-0 win over Douglas Hall in the FAI Cup. On Friday the Blues face Saint Patrick's Athletic who are still flying. They've lost just one league game and also progressed in the cup without too many problems.

Waterford are looking to avoid a fifth straight league loss while Pats are unbeaten in their last six. In truth, Waterford have picked up just three points all season, but one of them came against the Saints in a 0-0 draw on the opening day.

The Saints will hope to cement at least fifth place going into the World Cup break and know that this is the sort of game they are expected to win this season.

John Hayes is Waterford's only injury doubt going into the game. He is struggling with an ankle problem.

John Frost is suspended for Pats and misses a game against his former club while Chris Armstrong, Colm Foley and Stephen Caffrey are all out through injury.

Preview: Dublin City v Cork City

Cork City boss Damien Richardson will be in the spotlight as his team visit Dublin on Friday. Following his controversial rant after their cup loss to Longford, the Cork boss awaits disciplinary action. On the pitch though he can't hide the fact that his team isn't performing this season and from five away league games, they've collected just three points and are still seeking a league goal away from the Cross.

Dublin City made tough work of it but they did eventually edge past Monaghan United to the third round of the FAI Cup. Two league wins on the trot elevated Dublin to sixth in the table and another against the reigning league champions could lift them level on points to fifth.

Dublin City have never beaten Cork City in five previous league meetings and in fact only avoided defeat once, the 1-1 draw in August 2004.

Stuart Malcolm is set to miss out for Dublin City due to personal commitments with Alan Keely also set to miss the game. Ger McCarthy could feature after overcoming injury.

Michael Devine and Danny Murphy are suspended for Cork with Mark McNulty taking over between the posts and Billy Woods set to take over at full back. Neal Horgan is also set to return after a hamstring problem.
