Switzerland's Meyer Burger, which develops specialized saws for high-tech applications, used OneSpace 3D CAD modeling to develop its latest product in record time. It took just nine months — 40% less than typical projects — to design a wire saw for cutting extremely brittle wafers for solar panels. The design for the DS 264/4 saw called for operational tolerances as precise as 100 µm.

The new version of Adobe Acrobat 8 will make CAD files more portable for easy exchange with even far-flung members of your team. Users can convert almost any 3D CAD file — including large assemblies of more than 500 megabytes — into a single PDF that maintains precise geometry despite compression. The 3D data can also be combined with other critical information, such as product specifications, spreadsheets, and bills of materials.

More companies will adopt direct digital manufacturing, featuring 3D CAD linked to onsite laser-sintering or stereolithography machines, predicts Design News. Industry analyst Terry Wohlers says nearly 12% of additive fabrication users now derive some of their revenue from such rapid manufacturing — up from less than 4% in 2003 — with products that range from aircraft components to hearing aids.
