OPK 'Oboronprom' to Set up a Russian-Jordanian JV for Ka-226 Production

The OPK 'Oboronprom' Middle East will be set up as a Russian-Jordanian joint venture engaged in the Ka-226 production, Oboronprom General Director, Mr. Denis Manturov has announced.

The OPK Oboronprom Middle East will aim at not only manufacturing the Ka-226s but also at establishing a service center for all OPK Oboronprom's helicopter manufacturing subsidiaries to maintain the products in the region. A pilot and technician training center will also be set up to provide the regional customers with accessible helicopter training. The regional Sales and Marketing Department of the Oboronprom Middle East will promote the products in the Middle East.

Mr. D. Manturov, General Director said: 'Russian helicopter manufacturers have long-standing and streamlined relations with the states of the Arab region. It is almost over 50 years since the 'Mil' helicopters have been shipped first to the Arab countries. The first to receive these helicopters were Egypt, Syria, Yemen and Algeria, and later other countries of the region. The 'Mil' helicopters are in the inventory of Helicopter Army Aviation of several Arab countries and are widely used in the region to perform different civil tasks. During many years of operation our helicopters proved to be reliable and undemanding rotorcraft designed to best fit the Middle East and Northern Africa. I am convinced that the Ka-226s will earn a good reputation in the region thanks to their high performance'.

The Ka-226 is a light utility helicopter featuring a modular design, which enables its use in various configurations: passenger, transport, search-and-rescue, emergency medical services, patrol and fire-fighting. The Ka-226 is to become one of the key show events at SOFEX-2006 and is posed to enter Russian aviation history as the first foreign exhibition where the Ka-226 was displayed.

Representatives of the Jordanian company and the OPK Oboronprom's delegation headed by Mr. Manturov will take part in the signing ceremony at SOFEX 2006.

During the three-day exhibition (28 - 30 March), the OPK Oboronprom will display both the 'Kamov' and 'Mil' helicopters. The 'Mil' Moscow Helicopter Plant and the 'Kamov' company will display their products within the framework of Russian exposition at the 'OPK 'Oboronprom' showcase arranged under the auspices of 'Rosoboronexport' federal state unitary enterprise. The exhibition visitors will have an opportunity to obtain performance data of the entire 'Kamov' and 'Mi' civil helicopter families and to see training equipment.

The SOFEX-2006 international exhibition on Special Operation Forces will take place at the King Abdullah airbase in Marka airport.

Helicopter retrofit and modification projects: Mi-34, Mi-8/17, Mi-26 and Ka-32 will also be presented at the exhibition. Among new projects to be presented at the exhibition are Mi-54, Mi-38 and Ka-62 helicopters.
