Sony Ericsson Reese leaked: swiveling QWERTY handset

Here’s a Sony Ericsson phone that definitely looks unique (at least when compared to the other SE devices): Sony Ericsson Reese.

Now, Reese seems to be only a codename, so the phone’s real moniker will probably be different.

Anyway, the handset has just appeared over at the Esato forums, in what looks like a SE promo flyer. Unfortunately, there are little details about it, and the available image doesn’t let us check it out the way we’d want to.

Reading the text on the flyer, it’s obvious that Reese is a device targeted at young mobile users:

    "The new Reese from Sony Ericsson. A unique swivel design reveals a QWERTY keypad below the large portrait screen which allows you to view several messages of any kind in high definition. It also comes with one-click access to your favourite networking sites. So now it’s never been easier to keep up with your mates."





What’s interesting is that, when the QWERTY keyboard is unveiled, the display stays in a vertical position – I don’t think I’ve seen this in any other mobile phone until now.

Reese might run on Android, Windows Mobile, or just on the same platform as Sony Ericsson C905; things aren’t too clear about this at the moment.

It’s said that the new handset won’t make an appearance at MWC 2009 (where we should see Hikaru in action), but, if it will, we’ll be there to bring you more info about it.

If the rumors are true, Sony Ericsson will soon release a  C905 version with 8GB internal memory. The current C905 version have 160MB internal memory (2GB memory card is included)  so its quite nice upgrade. The Sony Ericsson C905 is the first Cyber-shot in slider form-factor, and the first with 8-megapixel resolution. It also features GPS for Geo-tagging, WiFi and has TV-out.

Ericsson looking to dump cell phone business; Sony to buy its stake in SE?



This one definitely falls into the unconfirmed rumors category for the time being, but a German magazine is reporting Ericsson has had enough of the consumer cell phone game. According to the report, Ericsson is looking to dump its stake in the company’s joint venture with Sony, Sony Ericsson, and stick to what it does best — infrastructure, back end network components and the like. The magazine also states that Sony may be toying with the idea of picking up Ericsson’s share of the JV and controlling 100 percent of the company. We’re not sure how the struggling Japanese manufacturer plans to scrape up enough cash for a deal like this but where there’s a will (and an electronics empire) there’s a way. It will definitely be interesting to see how this one plays out as it would certainly be the end of an era. An Ericsson rep declined to comment on the story.

Sony Ericsson Working on Slim Flip Phone Dubbed Twiggy?



Twiggy’s a vaguely derogatory way of calling a phone slim, don’t you think? Not only does it potentially have some self-image issues, we’re having some image-focus issues here, too, but I guess we’ll take what we can get. The only thing we really know about Twiggy MS500 is that it’s packing a 3.2 megapixel camera (no AF), and a QVGA TFT screen. We’re not sure of its status (the source speculates that the Twiggy is was cancelled), but something that slim with a 3.2 megapixel camera can’t be that bad…Hopefully we’ll see more of this one soon.

UPDATE: We got another picture that looks a touch more official. Markedly resembles the W350 announced last year, and should prove to be a worthy successor.

Sony Ericsson X2 spotted?



A tipster tells us that the device you're looking at here is Sony Ericsson's codename "Vulcan" -- better known as the X2 -- which would presumably replace the X1 at some point in the next few days, weeks, months, or years. Though the picture's small, you can clearly make out the X Panel button in the lower left of the phone's front and a Windows key in the upper left of the keyboard, which adds a dose of credibility -- the company has, after all, put quite a bit of time and effort into pimping its panel interface SDK, and right now, the X1 is the only device that supports it. The image looks a little rough around the edges, but we can easily chalk that up to this being either a composite mockup or a very early prototype combined with the fact that our tipster seems to have blanked out the surroundings to protect the source. We're not saying it's definitely real, but this certainly looks plausible -- we're just not convinced yet that it looks better than the model it'd replace. Thoughts?

Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 “Vulcan” smiles for the camera



New spy shots of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2, codenamed “Vulcan”, have emerged from the forums over at fanklub.se. The successor to the current X1 is looking dapper in its black casing, black keyboard and silver bezel. On the back, the Windows Mobile handset sports an 8 megapixel camera with flash. What you see is what we know as no other details about this phone have been leaked. If it follows in the footsteps of its predecessor, we should see it launch sometime in 2011.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X2 shows up again, this time in silver



Reaction to the rumored X2 pictures leaked this far has been lukewarm at best, but hold up -- it's looking a whole lot different (and arguably better) in silver. We can certainly buy that this is dead-on real, since... well, it looks real, and also because the X1's also available in both shades. We're still not convinced it outshines its predecessor for sheer sex appeal, but an 8.1 megapixel camera upgrade is hard to argue with, isn't it? Anyhow, with this many units seemingly floating around in the wild, let's hope we're not too far off from an official announcement.
