Empoli took a big step towards Serie A survival with a prestigious home win (1-0) over Lazio courtesy of an early goal on a direct free kick by Ighli Vannucchi.



After three consecutive defeats, it was imperative for relegation battlers Empoli to get a result at home against Lazio. It was unsurprisingly a hard-fought match, which was decided by an early goal on a free kick by Ighli Vannucchi, and which saw Lazio defender Aleksandar Kolarov sent off late on.

The game winner came after 7 minutes, when Vannucchi took a free kick from 22 meters and found the net with a shot that went around the wall and beat Marco Ballotta.

It was a good performance by Empoli, who created the best chances, wasting a lot of free kicks, and put a lot of pressure on the Biancocelesti.

A minute before the end, Lazio saw Kolarov sent off for a two-footed foul on Francesco Marianini, and the visitors had to concede defeat on a day that saw them create very few chances.

Lazio Begin Negotiations For Cassano
Lazio have opened preliminary talks with Real Madrid over the possibility of signing Antonio Cassano in the summer, according to the Corriere dello Sport.

    Cassano is currently on a season-long loan at Sampdoria, and the port-city club have first option to make the move permanent at the end of the season.   

Although the 25-year-old is keen to stay with the Blucerchiati, and even take a pay cut, it is believed that the club will still not be able to afford his reduced salary.   

Lazio’s finances have improved greatly in recent months, and President Claudio Lotito recently admitted that they would be making some purchases “that were unthinkable for our club until recently."     

Yesterday morning Lazio held preliminary talks with Real Madrid officials in Rome over the possibility of signing Cassano.   

Lotito admitted yesterday that he was close to capturing the player last summer, but in the end opted against it due to the forward’s Roma past.   

"He is a great footballer,” said the businessman.   

“We thought we had him in the summer and the boy wanted to come to Lazio.   

“It was an idea that we caressed, although there would have been inevitable teething troubles within the dressing room due to his past at Roma"     

It remains to be seen how Lazio fans will take to Cassano if he does end up in a Biancocelesti shirt next season.
