The former Juventus striker beamed: "Napoli was always my first choice and I'm happy to have made it.

Uruguayan striker Marcelo Zalayeta talked about how he found back faith in himself at new club Napoli after many years warming the bench at Juventus.

 
The Black Panther is ready for revenge. Part Juventus-owned Napoli striker Marcelo Zalayeta wants to prove a point at his new club, with no hard feelings toward the Turin giants, who have had him under contract for many years without ever giving him consistent playing time.

"Now I can show who the real Zalayeta is. The brace against Udinese was only the start," he boasted. "I only want to prove to myself that I can play regularly in Serie A and that Napoli's faith in me was warranted. Where I am now, I can fight for my place in the starting XI, but at Juve I always had a bunch of super-strikers ahead of me.

"Also after that goal against Barcelona in the Champions League (2003 quarter-final at Camp Nou), I received a lot of praise but after that I went back to the bench again. I understand and justify all the coaches I had there: at Juve you always have to win and you can't risk playing with youngsters. [Fabio] Capello gave me a few more chances, but in the end he also had to make certain choices," he continued.

Marcelo Danubio Zalayeta, 28 years of age, born in Montevideo, Uruguay, has travelled around Italy (Empoli and Perugia) and Spain (Sevilla) on loan deals since joining Juventus in 1997, but did not want the same thing to happen again.

"I told the Juve management I was tired of being loaned out," he revealed. "Then Napoli came along, and immediately showed confidence in me. They proposed me a four-year contract. I hope to repay their trust with a good season, with a lot of goals, hopefully more than 10. Until now I haven't managed to reach double figures because I haven't played regularly.

"I'm a calm person. At the start, I felt intimidated by the intense passion and fanaticism of the Napoli public. I noticed it when I came to play at the San Paolo for the Trofeo Moretti and on other occasions. But I'll get used to it. Against Cagliari what impressed me most was seeing thousands of people bare-chested because of the great heat," he concluded.

Goals from Marcelo Zalayeta and Marek Hamsik power Napoli to their second consecutive victory.

Napoli gave their home fans something to cheer about as they outclassed Sampdoria at the Stadio Sao Paulo for their second successive victory.

Napoli were fresh off their 5-0 shellacking of Udinese and continued their good form with Marcelo Zalayeta giving the home side a well deserved lead in the 43 minute.

He slotted home an easy goal after a defensive blunder sent him clear through on goal. The former Juventus man now has three goals in as many games for his new club.

Sampdoria were playing without the likes Antonio Cassano and Emiliano Bonazzoli and they lacked the firepower upfront that is necessary to win away from home in the Serie A.

They never really threatened and played second fiddle to Napoli, who fot man of the match performances from Zalayeta and Ezequiel  Lavezzi, who ran rampant and wild down the left flank for most of the afternoon.   

Napoli put the game away in the 76th minute when Hamsik was played through with a neat, one touch ball from Zalayeta and he proceeded to round the keeper and slot the ball into open net.

It was a good performance by Napoli and they should have added a third but Blasi failed to tap in with the wide open net at his mercy.

Napoli sports chief Pierpaolo Marino was delighted to see Marcelo Zalayeta score in yesterday's victory over Sampdoria.

"He's a focal point in attack," Marino said of the former Juventus striker. "He not only scores goals, but brings the midfield into the game."

He added: "We want to surprise people this season. Setting targets doesn't interest us, we'll just try doing our best Sunday to Sunday."
