Russia and India perfect BrahMos

MOSCOW. (RIA Novosti commentator Andrei Kislyakov) - Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov arrives in India on February 12 for the opening ceremony of the Year of Russia in India.

A joint project, years in the making, the Year of Russia in India will inject further momentum into military-technical cooperation between the two countries, an area that is already leading Russian-Indian business relations.

Military cooperation is based on the latest achievements in the defense industry. A case in point is the BrahMos-2, a new tactical cruise missile named after India's Brahmaputra River and Russia's Moskva River. In the coming five years the Russian-Indian joint venture BrahMos Aerospace, founded in 1998, will produce the missile for India's Defense Ministry.

At five times the speed of sound, the BrahMos-2 is fast enough to overcome any air defense system. More than 20 Russian plants and design bureaus, including the leading Russian missile producers Strela and Mashinostroyeniye research and production association, will be involved in the production of the new weapon.

The main feature of this missile is its versatility: it can be based on vehicles, ships, submarines and aircraft. In other words, the BrahMos missile can be supplied to every branch of the armed forces.

On June 21 of last year India's Ground Forces received their first BrahMos-1 missile, mounted on a Tatra truck chassis. A series of successful test launches had already confirmed the high combat qualities and effectiveness of the new weapon.

The Indian Defense Ministry announced on January 1 that the missile would be soon supplied to the Air Force for Russian-built multi-role Su-30MKI fighters. The Indian Navy received the BrahMos-1 in 2006.

The BrahMos-1 has a range of 290 kilometers, a cruise speed of 920 meters per second, and carries an up to 300-kilogram warhead.

The BrahMos is the descendent of a well-known Russian predecessor, the Yakhont anti-ship cruise missile developed by the Mashinostryeniye research and production association in the early 1980s. It was designed to fight against surface naval groups and single ships in conditions of strong enemy opposition and radio-electronic warfare.

Unlike previous Russian anti-ship missiles, which had a relatively narrow carrier specialization, the Yakhont was designed for launch from submarines, surface vessels, aircraft and shore batteries. In its versatility the missile was designed to surpass the American Harpoon, at that time the best foreign anti-ship missile.

The BrahMos missile has inherited all the best characteristics of its Russian predecessor: over the horizon (OTH) range, self-sustainability (fire-and-forget principle), a set of flexible ('low', 'high-low') trajectories, supersonic velocity at all stages of flight, full commonality for various carriers, and the ability to avoid detection by radar.

Sea-based BrahMos missile hits ground target in test launch

05/03/2008 16:21 NEW DELHI, March 5 (RIA Novosti) - A sea-based Russian-Indian BrahMos supersonic cruise missile has successfully hit a designated ground target for the first time, a spokesman for the Indian manufacturer of the missile said on Wednesday.

"The missile was launched from INS Rajput at a target located on an island in the Andaman archipelago and hit the designated target," a spokesman for BrahMos Aerospace said.

This was the first test of a sea-based BrahMos missile against a ground target. All the previous test launches were aimed at sea-based targets, according to the spokesman.

In 1998, Russia and India established the BrahMos Aerospace joint venture to design, develop, produce and market a supersonic cruise missile.

The Brahmos missile, named after India's Brahmaputra River and Russia's Moskva River, has a range of 180 miles (290 kms) and can carry a conventional warhead of up to 660 pounds. It can hit ground and sea targets while flying at an altitude as low as 10 meters (30 feet) and at a speed of Mach 2.8, which is about three times faster than the U.S.-made subsonic Tomahawk cruise missile.

The INS Rajput guided missile destroyer serves as the trial ship for the BrahMos cruise missile, which is expected to carry part of the strategic second-strike capability of the Indian armed forces.

The missile was first tested successfully against sea-based targets in 2004. Its sea-based version was adopted in June 2006 and deployed on Project 11356 Talvar-class (Kryvack) destroyers, including INS Rajput, built in Russia for the Indian Navy.

However, it took Russian and Indian experts a while longer to develop the missile so that it was capable of destroying ground targets.

Work is currently underway to create aircraft- and submarine-based BrahMos missiles.

The airborne version could be installed on the Sukhoi-30MKI air superiority fighters belonging to the Indian Air Force.

Experts estimate that India might purchase up to 1,000 BrahMos missiles for its Armed Forces in the next decade, and export 2,000 to third countries during the same period.

Jao jeste nedavno secam se. Doduse ova poslednja vest se odnosi na verziju koja sluzi za napade na ciljeve na zemlji, nesto kao nadzvucna krstareca raketa.

Da li ameri razvijaju nekog naslednika tomahawka?
Čudno mi da oni ćute dok Rusi prave nove krstareće rakete.

Nemaju razloga,Tomahawk je odlicna raketa i dan danas.

slazem se...iako su se i nad nama igrali sa njom,uvek mi se svidjala...
ma,ova indija me u zadnje vreme brine.ne sumnjam ja u njenu spoljnu politiku i stavove,cak i navijam za nju,ali previse joj opreme daju...Rusi umesto da prvo sebi nabave T-90ke,oni daju njima,i to ce uskoro biti cak 1300 komada!!!  al,dobro,kad razmislim,to je sjajan potez,jer prvo skupe pare od prodaje,i onda posle imaju taman za dva puta vecu kolicinu za sebe.prvo se nadje trziste,tako to ide...
mada,opet,malo strepim...bice ona uvek uz Rusiju,i pod njenom tehnikom i partnerstvom,ali brine me to sto im je plan da za nekolko godina imaju 3.300 tenkova i jos dosta toga.nije to nista(ne mislim na tenkove,vec na sve),pogotovu ne za Rusiju,ili NATO,i sigurno ce samo pojacati odnose sa istokom i Rusijom,ali ne shvatam zasto toliko zeli da zvecka oruzjem,pogotovu i tim Ruskim teskim raketama...
