Ronaldo: Goalless draw in Rio

Ronaldos first match in the Campeonato Brasileiro in more than 15 years ended in a goalless draw.

Corinthians are expected to be one of the title candidates this season and managed a goalless draw against Botafogo-RJ on Sunday at the Engenhao stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

It was Ronaldo's first game in the Campeonato Brasileiro since 14 november 1993, when he played his last game for Cruzeiro before leaving for Dutch club PSV Eindhoven.

After two matches Corinthians are placed 17th wit one point, five points behind league leaders Vitoria Bahia. Next league match is against Gremio Barueri at home on Saturday.

On Wednesday Ronaldo and Corinthians will be playing once again in Rio. This time on Maracana Stadium against Fluminense in the semifinals of the Copa do Brasil.

Minor injury problem for Ronaldo

Corinthians are ready for the semifinals in the Copa do Brasil, but Ronaldo is out for the next league game.

"It has not been easy to play in the last two games, because I have a little problem with the right calf. That limited and disturbed my play. When I enter the pitch not fully ready, it's never the same," Ronaldo said after Corinthians on Wednesday night in Rio eliminated Fluminense in the Copa after a 2-2 draw.

Ronaldo sees a game a week as the ideal, but has played two cup matches against Fluminense and a league game against Botafogo in eight days.

"The problems started last week before the game against Fluminense at Pacaembu. I had to take a lot of medicine beacuse of a flu. On the eve of the match I felt a problem in my right calf. Since then, the pain has not disappeared.”

”Unfortunately, I can not face Barueri on Saturday, but I will prepare for the Copa do Brasil semifinal against Vasco, which is the priority of the Corinthians right now.”

The comeback kid

After 13 months on the sidelines Ronaldo has returned once again as prolific goalscorer.

Three times during his 16 years as a professional football player Ronaldo has suffered from a carreer threathening injury – and three times O Fenômeno (The Phenomenon) has made a gloriuos comeback.

When he left AC Milan in the summer 2008 the three time winner of the FIFA Player of the Year award didn't seem to be able to recover from his injury and had no other club to go to. At the age of 31 Ronaldo seemed to be finished with top level football.

But Ronaldo started to train in Rio de Janeiro with Flamengo during his recovery from knee surgery, and the club's board of directors said that the doors were open for him to join. However, on 9 December, Ronaldo signed a one-year deal with Flamengo's league rival Corinthians in Sao Paulo.

”The risk is big. I don't know whether I'll play well or badly, but I'm hopeful it will be well. I would not attempt this challenge if I didn't know I could play. I only want to prove to myself that I can play,” Ronaldo said.

Ronaldo played his first match for Corinthians on 4 March 2009, a Copa do Brasil match against Itumbiara and scored his first goal for Corinthians on March 8, 2009, in a Campeonato Paulista match against Palmeiras.

Not only did he help Corinthians win the Campeonato Paulista with 10 goals in 14 games. Two of them in a spectacular way against Santos FC in the first leg of the final.

”I doubt that there is anyone in the world right now as happy as I am right now. I can honestly tell you that I am the happiest man on earth. It has been a long road to recovery and today's title makes everything that much more special. It feels great. The victory means a lot to me,” Ronaldo said after the title was secured at the Estadio do Pacaembu in Sao Paulo.

He was also named Best Player of the championship prompting the press and the fans to demand him back on the national team. But Ronaldo has played down these speculations, insisting that recovering from his injury is the most important thing. However, he has not hidden his desire to play at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. He played at the 2006 World Cup, where he became the highest goalscorer in the history of the World Cup with his fifteenth goal, surpassing Gerd Müller's previous record of 14.

Ronaldo happy about Adriano's comeback

Ronaldo has praised Adriano's return to football at Flamengo.

Adriano scored one of the two gaols, when the Red and Blacks beated Atletico Paranaense 2-1 at the Maracana.

And the shirt number 9 of Corinthians defended ”The Emeperor” against the criticism he suffered after leaving Inter Milan.

"Adriano is a great friend. He has been heavily criticized. But he has to be judged by what he does on the pitch. He returned to goalscoring and is happy. And his happiness is my happiness," said Ronaldo.

Ronaldo: It was worth all the hard work

Corinthians and Ronaldo once again reached the final of the Copa do Brasil.

With Ronaldo back in the starting lineup Corinthians took advantage of the 1-1 result in the away game and held Vasco da Gama at the Pacaembu throughout the match. The goalless tie secured Timão the the second consecutive final of the Copa do Brasil, this time against the Internacional.

"With a lot of work, we came in the final. I think the hard work, we delivered was normal, as it was a major semifinal against a team with great young players, who want to prove their value. But it was worth it," said Ronaldo.

"We played with intelligence and achieved our main objective, which was qualifying for the final," Ronaldo said after the draw.
