Ronaldo back on the big stage



Corinthians and Ronaldo on Sunday play against Santos in the Paulista championship final.

And for both it's another milestone on a difficult path to get back on the top. While Corinthians was relegated from the Brazilian Serie A in 2007, and had to fight for promotion last year, Ronaldo at the same time has been fighting his own personal battle against serious injuries.

So far Ronaldo's comeback to football at Corinthians has been a great success. The striker has managed to net six goals in nine matches for his new club,and hopes to add further to that tally,when he plays at Vila Belmiro in Santos in the first leg of the final.

At the same time it also provides the opportunity for Ronaldo to win his first trophy since claiming the Spanish league title with Real madrid back in 2003. In 2007 Ronaldo left Real Madrid four months before the club won the Spanish championship. And in Milan he could not play a part in the clubs Champions League triumph as he had turned out for Real in the same tournament that season.

Corinthians has lost three and drawed once in the last four away games against Santos, who won the state schampionship in 2006 and 2007, while the last triumph for Corinthians go back to 2003.

pa realno bi bilo i da ide..taman ce biti jos spremniji sledece godine a i realno Brazil nikad nije u tezem polozaju bio..i kad im je napad u pitanju..Adriano flipnuo,hoce da napusti fudbal,Baptista nikakav..Fabiano  i Wagner Love solidni..ali daleko od vrhunskog napadaca kakav je Ronaldo..tako da Dungi bi bilo pametno da ga pozove..ako zeli da zadrzi selektorsku fotelju koja mu se opasno drma..
ps:Ronaldo je istrcao 30 m brzinom od 36km/h na sat kad je postigao poslednji gol..sto je za za respect.. i dalje mu je ostala brzina..

dadno je ladno dva komada u gostima Santosu i starcu Peleu koji ga je svojevremeno optuzio zajedno sa Robinjiom da se drogira..prakticno im je doneo titulu a napominjem prosle sezone su igrali u drugoj ligi..

RONALDO BRACE SPARKS CORINTHIANS WIN
   
 
Ronaldo scored a brace as Corinthians defeated Santos 3-1 to put themselves in a commanding position after the first leg of the Campeonato Paulista finals in Brazil.

Chicao opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a free-kick before Ronaldo added a second for his side 14 minutes later.

Corinthians goalkeeper Felipe turned Triguinho's cross into his own net on the hour mark but Ronaldo restored his side's two goal advantage when he clipped the ball over the body of Santos custodian Fabio Costa with 14 minutes remaining.

"No matter who scores, the most important thing is the result," said Ronaldo. "Nobody expected this score and it is very important."

Santos coach Vagner Mancini admitted Ronaldo was the difference between the two sides.

"Ronaldo made all the difference today," he said. "Corinthians attacked a few times, but when they did that, Ronaldo had the ball. He is a genius."

Ronaldo scored a goal in each half to lead Corinthians to a 3-1 win over Santos in the first leg of the Sao Paulo state championship final on Sunday.

In Rio de Janeiro, two-time defending champion Flamengo and Botafogo drew 2-2 in the first leg of that state's final.

Ronaldo's seventh and eighth goals in his last nine matches helped Corinthians earn a significant advantage ahead of the second leg. Corinthians can win its record 26th state title even if it loses next week's match at Pacaembu stadium by a two-goal difference.

Ronaldo scored his first goal in the 25th minute after receiving a long pass just outside the area and firing a low left-footed shot past charging Santos goalkeeper Fabio Costa.

He found the net again with a remarkable goal in a breakaway in the 76th, dribbling past a defender outside the penalty box and hitting a delicate lob shot over Fabio Costa.

"The most important thing today was the result,'' said Ronaldo, who scored the decisive goal in the semifinal against Sao Paulo last week. "It gives us a very good advantage ahead of the second match.''

Ronaldo, a three-time FIFA world player of the year, spent more than a year sidelined after sustaining the third serious knee injury of his career in February 2008.

Defender Chicao had opened the scoring for Corinthians with a well-struck free kick in the 10th, while Santos - the 2006 and 2007 state champion - got on the board with left back Triguinho in the 60th after his cross deflected on Corinthians goalkeeper Felipe and went into the net.

It was Corinthians' first win against Santos at Vila Belmiro - the stadium where Pele made history with Santos in the early 1960s - since 2005. Santos had won three matches and drew one in the coastal city. Pele was at the stadium on Sunday.

Corinthians and Santos are contesting the Sao Paulo state championship for the first time in 25 years, when Santos came out on top in the 1984 tournament.

Corinthians, a four-time national champion, entered the final with the tiebreaker advantage because it had a better campaign in the traditional tournament.
