REVIEW: DEPORTIVO 0 - SEVILLA 0 (LIGA 22h00)

16 Apr 2006 -- Deportivo couldn’t take advantage of their home status and they were only able to achieve a draw against Sevilla, a direct rival for the European positions. The game was a boring one as both squads missed an effectiveness in the offensive sector. It could also be considered as a good result bearing in mind the problems that Caparrós faced in the defensive sector, and also because it helps to maintain alive their European hopes.

BEFORE THE MATCH
The novelty for Deportivo was the presence of Julián de Guzmán at right back while Héctor played in the centre. César and Juanma were both ruled out of the game and Caparrós preferred the Héctor-Romero combination to cover the central positions. Another surprise was the presence of Xisco as a starter, the Mallorca-born striker lined up with Iago as the offensive duo for Deportivo. For Sevilla, coach Juande Ramos chose the Maresca-Saviola combination to lead their offensive efforts.

FIRST HALF
Deportivo started the game knowing that a victory would put them in the UEFA zone, for that reason they were creating pressure in midfield and the first chances to score were for them. The clearest chance was for Munitis, the Cantabrian winger sent a shot that was deflected by a Sevilla defender and the keeper Palop made a good save, sending the ball out for a corner-kick.

Little by little Sevilla started to appear in the game, the fast combinations between their strikers caused Deportivo some trouble, Saviola was the most active menace to the home side although they never enjoyed a clear chance to score.

The game lost intensity as both sides delayed the action with continuous fouls but a good chance for Depor arrived shortly before the end of the first half. Sergio's shot from long distance was only parried by Palop and a defender was forced to deflect the ball for a corner-kick before Xisco could put the rebound away. Half-time arrived and both teams gave the impression of having too much respect for their rival, the importance of the three points could also be a reason why the game became so boring after the first fifteen minutes.

SECOND HALF
Iago was replaced by Rubén Castro, coach Caparrós noticed that the Galician youngster disappeared in the entire first half and he tried to give more impulse to his squad. But the first chance to score was for Sevilla, a shot made by Maresca that Molina contained without too much trouble.

The modification made by Caparrós worked out as the Canarian player showed a good understanding with Munitis, but once again it was Maresca who enjoyed a chance to score with another shot from long distance, Molina reacted well, sending the ball out for a Sevilla corner. Deportivo responded with Xisco receiving a cross from De Guzmán, but the youngster's shot was deflected by Palop.

As happened in the first half, the game lost intensity after the first fifteen minutes. Both sides showed a lack of effectiveness in the attacking zone. Diego Tristán and Luis Fabiano entered the pitch, but the situation didn't change at all. Sevilla even had the chance to earn their first win in 50 years at the Riazor, but Luis Fabiano missed a couple of chances and Molina made a couple of great saves.

AFTER THE GAME
It was the first 0-0 for Deportivo in the present liga campaign, the Galicians lost a good opportunity to reach the fifth spot, but at least they keep their European options intact. Now Deportivo must travel to Cádiz next weekend while Sevilla has a tough test at home to Barcelona. The UEFA cup fight is still likely to be a hard one for everybody.

IS TRISTAN LEAVING?

21 Apr 2006 -- Striker Diego Tristán exploded yesterday with his new declarations, he expressed his frustration for his back-up roll during the last matches of Deportivo, a fact that according to his words could cause an exit at the end of the present season. The Sevillan striker also had some criticism about Caparrós’ work.

Tristán explained the reasons for his frustration: "I can't be without playing after all the things I made for this club. This situation isn't good for me or for the club and we can't continue in the same way. For that reason, I am now in the hands of the president and the fans, they seem to be showing their disapproval every time that I am entering to the pitch and maybe the best thing to do is to go out."

The Sevillan striker manifested that the main thing annoying him is his lack of participation during the last matches: "What can't be occurring is to be playing one day for only ten minutes, then in the other day, being out of the game and later, for the following encounter, playing for only twenty minutes. I played 19 matches in the first round and I scored 9 goals, mostly I was replaced in those games. Since then, nobody knows what has happened."

He also responded to the comments of Caparrós after the draw against Sevilla, the Utrera-born coach said that one of the reasons for Depor's lack of goals is the absence of a striker with sparkle like Makaay: "In the past seasons the strikers in the team had seven or eight opportunities in each game, and the team was always at the top. A forward needs opportunities and if they don't occur it is impossible to score goals. The coach could name Makaay or the best striker in the world, but nobody has now the same occasions we enjoyed before."

In this sense, Tristán believes that the current style of playing in Deportivo is affecting the strikers' performance: "The style of playing is different since the new coach arrived, and I am the loser with this situation since I am no longer in the starting lineup." He also said that he doesn't have a personal problem with Depor's coach: "One thing is his decisions, but he is a wonderful person and I don't have any problem with him."

The Algaba-born striker was asked about his possible future, he said that for the moment he's only thinking of ending the season, but he also gave a clue about his preferences: "Right now I am only thinking in the next five games with my team, I am in love with Spanish football and if my exit is necessary I will not put any obstacle to it."

REVIEW: CADIZ 1 - 1 DEPORTIVO (LA LIGA)

23 Apr 2006 -- Deportivo only managed a draw at Cadiz, losing the initiative in the race for a European position. The Galicians broke the deadlock early on, but between the two red cards shown to De Guzman and Manuel Pablo in the second half, Cadiz managed to level the score.

BEFORE THE MATCH
Coloccini, Juanma and Manuel Pablo were returning for the clash with Cadiz, making it unnecessary for Capa to improvise in this sector as he did one week ago against Sevilla. The first two even started the match in the center of the defense, with Hector and Capdevila continuing the good work on the wings.

In midfield, De Guzman replaced Sergio along Duscher, while Munitis' place was taken by Romero. The attack was again spearheaded by Arizmendi, backed up by Iago.

THE FIRST HALF
The pitch in Cadiz was soaked, and both teams had troubles early on to move the ball around. Nevertheless, it was the home side who put pressure in the first minutes and could have scored from a corner kick, had Fleurquin been sharper. But only two minutes later, Deportivo opened the score at the other end, again from a corner kick. Poor defending by Cadiz left Iago with enough space to slot the ball from the penalty spot.

After the initial shock, Cadiz tried to get back into the game, but it was the water-soaked pitch that kept them from creating any danger. Then, with twenty minutes to go in the first half, Hector had to be replaced by Manuel Pablo, after some rough treatment by Lopez. But it was again the visiting side that enjoyed the better chances in the first half, with a corner that amouned to nothing, and then a long range effort by Victor that was blocked by the keeper.

THE SECOND HALF
The second half started lively, with both teams enjoying some good chances. First it was Cadiz who could have levelled the score on two occasions, before De Guzman went close to doubling Depor's lead. Sonn after, Capa reacted and sent Tristan in for Iago, forcing a second goal against a vulnerable Cadiz defense.

But it was Molina who had to save from a difficult shot, before De Guzman saw his second yellow card. Capa was forced to make his last substitution sending in Acuna for Arizmendi, leaving Tristan alone up front. Things got worse for Deportivo soon after, as Duscher was sent out for a single yellow card, a grave error of the referee. With two men down, Depor had to defend, but again the referee made his mark and awarded an indirect free kick at around seven meters from the goal, for a back pass from Manuel Pablo that Molina caught in his arms. Lobos made no mistake from that distance and scored the equalizer just before Manuel Pablo also got his marching orders for a second yellow. But the Galicians held on to the result, despite being heavily outnumbered.

AFTER THE MATCH
Depor's draw, combined with Celta's victory against Zaragoza has weakened the European chances of the Galicians considerably, with only four matchdays left. Not even a victory against Celta the next weekend can guarantee the UEFA qualification, as Depor are now five points away from them. It is more likely to surpass Sevilla in the standings, if they lose tonight against Barcelona, but last weekend's draw might come back to haunt Capa's men.

THE GALICIAN DERBY

25 Apr 2006 -- One of the most anticipated games of the season will occur on Saturday. Is the visit of Celta to Riazor. A confrontation that has already started several comments in the media. Both teams arrive to this match with the European spots on target, it's a crucial match for Deportivo since it could be one of the last opportunities in order to achieve an UEFA spot.

Celta has only won in two occasions in Riazor during the last 35 years , a negative fact that has been also emphasised with the aggregate score in the last three derby’s matches (11-0 in favour of Deportivo). The main doubt for Caparrós is the right side of his defensive line. With Manuel Pablo and De Guzmán suspended, the only alternative left is Héctor, but the Andalucian defender got injured on Sunday and Caparrós has already confirmed that it will be difficult to see him playing in the derby.

For this reason the alternative that Caparrós seems to be thinking is the presence of Fabricio Coloccini covering the spot, this will mean that the couple in the centre will be conformed by Juanma and Romero while Capdevila will continue on the left. The rest of the squad seems to be the normal, with Sergio and Duscher in midfield, Munitis on the left wing, Víctor on the right and the duo Iago-Arizmendi in the striking positions. Another alternative could be Diego Tristán playing in the place of Arizmendi.

Newspaper La Voz de Galicia presented yesterday the opinion of four Galician trainers regading their view about Saturday's derby. They tried to compare the current state of both squads giving their prediction of what could happen on Saturday. Deportivo-la-coruna.com presents a translation of their comments:

Arsenio Iglesias (ex-Depor's coach): Having one team in a better mental state than its rival is a issue that implicates a lot of things: the fact of scoring more goals, playing better, a better union between the players... for that reason I prefer to have my team with a better mental state although the match will be played in the rival's stadium. But it's also truth that the current condition of Deportivo isn't too bad either, and Riazor is a pitch in which the public always support you during the derbies. For that reason, it's hard to predict what will happen taking in mind these two aspects.

Castro Santos (ex-Almería coach): Even in the worst times everything is forgotten when a derby arrives. For that reason and although Celta is in a better moment and despite of the latest results of Deportivo, the environment that Riazor will have is completely different to the one seen in other matches. For me the home condition is more important than the mental state of the players. The support will be so big, that the home players will give his best effort in order to surpass Celta.

José Luis Vara (Racing Ferrol's coach): In almost every occasion, and this time shouldn't be different, a derby is a very balanced game. The smallest of detail could decide the winner. Maybe the home condition could affect the match in a small percentage: it gives you more confidence. The players have a better concentration and that helps in order to keep the attention. Maybe Celta is in better condition right now, but personally, I prefer to play at home despite of been arriving from a poor performance in the last game.

Luis César Sampedro (Gimnastic's coach): Celta is living every game as a new challenge, with players evolving (Silva, Oubiña...) men that are moved by an objective that seemed far a couple of months ago (a place in Europe). Depor has a responsibility in every game they play at the Riazor. For this reason the game is balanced and the factors without a previous control will define the match. On such high intensity occasions, the stadium in which you play isn't important, I prefer to come to this match with a positive dynamic.

THE GALICIAN DERBY: IAGO VS OUBIÑA

27 Apr 2006 -- One of the better news for the match that will be played on Saturday, is the fact of been the first confrontation between the two Galician promises: Iago Iglesias and Borja Oubiña. Newspaper La Voz de Galicia reunited them in Santiago de Compostela. Both players talked about the derby and their experiences in la liga.

La Voz: They started to talk about the importance of the Galician players in a derby like this one...
Borja: For me, the derby must be played with respect and with Galician players on the pitch. I like to see the rivalry between both sides, but it must be a respectful confrontation.
Iago: Yes, it looks fine to me. Respect must be asked in every occasion, because the violence must be out of football. And I also think that the match must have Galician players, because a Galician derby won't be a Galician derby without them.

La Voz: Both youngsters talk about Saturday's game...
Borja: We are fine. Actually, we have been in a good run all over the season, although the people in Vigo is saying that Celta is in the better moment. I see Depor in the same line: solid. But they are under Celta at this point.
Iago: I share his opinion. Celta is enjoying a good moment and they also have good results. I think that we are OK too. I am sure that we can improve our performance, but in a derby it doesn't matter how you arrive to it.
Borja: We are interested in playing a normal match and not a derby, because it didn't end well on the last time we tried on that way. We must play the game without thinking in what is happening with the fans, trying to introduce the issues of a derby on the pitch isn't right for us, we didn’t succeed before and we ended badly.
Iago: But not for Depor. We must consider the people, they will support the squad until death. It's clear that we try to put off those things when we are the visitor, but as the local team, it's a favourable factor and we will try to use it in order to have a better performance. Later we will try to play as we know.
Borja: Maybe Deportivo was always a more mature team, with more experience. The anxiety didn't affect them as it affected us, and you learn for everything. Now we must change, isolate and end the day with at least five points of difference with them.
Iago: The environment could also be a negative factor as it happened in Balaídos. Another thing is how you play the game.
Borja: Now related to the style of playing, we are a squad that likes to play with empty spaces, although we aren't a team that practises the counterattacks. Without spaces, Celta suffers the most. If we are losing the match, those spaces disappear and we suffer, specially if we pass too much the ball. Besides, Depor is a tough, ordered and uncomfortable team. It's difficult to dominate them... let's see how it ends on Saturday.
Iago: But the problem is how to score a goal against Celta, we are experiencing problems to score. It will be a complicated match because they take advantage of the empty spaces. We have to be careful with their players, they are dangerous ones when they have the ball on their feet.

La Voz: The players also reminded the last descend of Celta, one that was almost confirmed in Riazor at that time...
Borja: I heard a lot of things in that game. But well... I don't remind a lot right now. You lose and you are in Segunda and anything happening in front of you is secondary. You are there, sunk and you really fell... pretty bad. But two years later, everything changed and you are here in order to confront a new derby. Besides we already studied Deportivo, even Iago (he laughs). I liked how you played in Villarreal, and the other day, I saw your goal on the TV, I saw that you hit the ball improperly, but ended in a goal after all.
Iago: Ja, ja. Yes, it's true. Against Cádiz.
Borja: Look, on the past season I also scored one like that against Tenerife.
Iago: Yes, but if I would try to sent it to the nearest post, it would ended in the clouds. Since the ball was wet, I made just a little touch and ended in a goal. But, who cares now?

La Voz: Iago and Borja Oubiña talk about the support that they fell from the fans in a derby like this one...
Iago: It's the first derby for me, but I already played against Celta at the Calasanz. It was special. I always tried to see the derby’s matches at Riazor.
Borja: Me too. I am socio of Celta since the 92, so I always tried to attend to the matches. But I wasn't one of those screaming in the stadium. The true is that I always went with a bitter attitude (he laughs). I always said it: In Vigo the people is more tranquil and cold, I always took the games in the same way. I was only trying to see a football game.
Iago: I don't know how is the people in Vigo, but in Riazor there is a sector that lives the game with more passion.
Borja: Yes, but in La Coruña there's more rage against Celta than in Vigo against Deportivo.
Iago: Really? In La Coruña everybody thinks that's the opposite.
Borja: At least is the sensation that I felt in Riazor. I see more passion in La Coruña, although there's always some provocation in both sides. It's also true that we came with a disadvantage of 11-0 in three games, and that hurts. Specially because is Depor. Let see if we can fix it. You know? it's a thing of image. It isn't too much about the fact that the team ended in the relegation zone two years ago, because Celta didn't descend in that game, although it hurts.
Iago: If your biggest rival puts the last nail in your grave, and with the provocation you see in the stadium, it's a thing that nobody likes to live. I saw that game at the Riazor.
Borja: Yes, you were one of those singing A Segunda, eo!
Iago: No! (he laughs) I only passed a good time, nothing more.

THE GALICIAN DERBY: COACHES TALKING ABOUT THE GAME

27 Apr 2006 -- Joaquín Caparrós and Fernando Vázquez are making a solid work so far. Deportivo and Celta are fighting for a place in the next European season and a new test has arrived to their hands: the Galician derby. Both coaches talked yesterday about the current situation of their squads and also about the rival's qualities.

CAPARROS: I AM MORE WORRIED ABOUT THE DEFENCE THAN BY MY STRIKING ZONE
Joaquín Caparrós is used to the environment that surrounds a derby match, he lived several games between Betis and Sevilla. For that reason he explained that he doesn't have a problem with the comments made by the people: "The provocation is the sauce of a derby. It seems a normal thing to me. I don't see it as a negative issue, as we approach to the game the comments will increase its intensity. I think that this situation is good, but only if they follow an sporting view."

The Sevillan coach also assured that this match is crucial for his team: "This is almost a definitive game for Deportivo. Celta has a margin of error, but we don't. This fact doesn't mean that one team is more motivated than the other one. We were obligated to defeat Sevilla and Cádiz, but... We are conscious of the importance of this game and we can't commit any mistake. We have to be responsible and not to be afraid."

Caparrós also confirmed what are his priorities for this game: "I am more worried about my defensive line than by my offensive sector." A clear reference to the injury problems in his defenders. Finally, the Utrera-born trainer expressed eulogies for Celta: "It isn't a casualty the good run of Celta on this season, we must see their performance, but always thinking in us first."

FERNANDO VAZQUEZ: MY TEAM IS YOUNGER AND HUNGRIER
The Galician coach expressed the rewards that his team will enjoy with a victory at the Riazor: "It's an important match. A win will secure us an UEFA spot and will give us options for the Champions League. The victory is the ultimate prize." He also assured that his team isn't searching a revenge after the last defeats against Deportivo in the derby's matches: "We have a negative statistic, but this team has broken a lot of numbers on this year. It's a challenge for us and it could give us more energy in order to compete, but it isn’t a revenge."

Vázquez also wanted to deny that Celta is the favourite to win the game: "I don't consider my team as favourite. In a derby the emotional issue is very important, also the communion with the fans. For that reason it will be an equal game. Deportivo is a great team that's making a solid season. They also have the advantage of been playing at home, and I don't think that we should be superior to them. In fact, I think that they are the favourite team in this game."

Celta's trainer also emphasised that the injuries in Deportivo aren't affecting the performance of the Blanquiazul squad: "Deportivo is a team with 20 international players. It's a very strong and important squad. I don't know why some people want to reduce the value of their achievements. Celta can't presume of having the same quantity of international players. My team is different: younger and maybe hungrier."

THE GALICIAN DERBY: TEAM'S STATISTICS

27 Apr 2006 -- Both teams arrives with the intention of confirming their European options. Celta experiences a good run lately with four victories in the last five liga matches, including two consecutive wins out of Balaídos. Deportivo continues to show a poor performance in La Coruña, but they have at least improved the home record achieving seven of the last nine points disputed in Riazor.

Celta is maintaining the fifth position in the table and they are even thinking in the fourth spot. The main reason for this situation are the four victories they have achieved in the last five liga encounters. Results that includes the away wins against Atlético (3-0) and Betis (2-0). The last home victory over Zaragoza (4-0) has also gave them a lot of confidence in their European chances.

But Vigo's team has to surpass a big historical fact: Celta has only won two times in Riazor during the last 35 years. The aggregate score of 11-0 accumulated in the last three derby's matches is also a statistical number that has been highly commented lately. The last victory of Celta against Deportivo occurred in the season 2002/03 at Balaídos (3-0), a result that assured their participation in the Champions League 2003/04 and that ended the championship dreams of Depor in la liga.

Caparrós' squad continues to suffer in the home matches, but they have at least improved the home record. Deportivo has achieved two victories (2-1 Vs Málaga and 2-0 Vs Racing) and one draw (0-0 Vs Sevilla) in the last three matches played at the Riazor.

But Depor has experienced a lot of troubles at home when they faced clubs that are fighting for the European spots. So far, the Blanquiazul squad has only been able to achieve three wins against this clubs: Atlético Madrid (1-0), Getafe (1-0) and Real Madrid (3-1). There have been also three draws: Barcelona (3-3), Zaragoza (1-1) and Sevilla (0-0). The other were three defeats: Osasuna (0-1), Valencia (0-1) and Villarreal (0-2). A curiosity is that Depor always fail to achieve the win when they end scoreless at home. The only exceptions are the defeat with Espanyol (1-2) and the scoreless draw with Sevilla.

WORRIES IN DEFENSE
Caparrós has made a clear statement after yesterday's training: "I am more worried about my defensive line than by my offensive sector." The reason for this situation are the injures suffered by Andrade, César, Romero, Héctor and Juanma. The latest suspensions of De Guzmán, Coloccini and Manuel Pablo are also increasing the defensive problems.

For this reason Depor's coach is preparing a new alternative: he has called the youngster David Vázquez 'Chapi' to train with the first squad during the present week. Héctor has experienced a nice recovery and could play as right defender since Manuel Pablo is suspended. This would mean that the defensive duo in the centre will be Coloccini-Juanma while Capdevila will continue on the left.

But if Héctor isn't fit, Coloccini would occupy his position and Romero will enter into the lineup in order to play with Juanma in the centre. Since César continues to experience physical troubles, the option of Chapi could be Caparrós’ selected choice to cover any necessity that he could have during the match. It could be his debut in Primera... and it would be a very special one.
