Skaloni pozajmljen Vest Hemu

GALLARDO HAPPY WITH HIS MOVE TO DEPOR

02 Feb 2006 -- Francisco Gallardo, Deportivo’s newest player, showed his surprise at the negotiations that ended with him in La Coruña. The 26-year old winger admitted that this move is a great step in his career and he's promising that his contribution will help the squad achieve its objectives.

Gallardo’s arrival at Deportivo wasn’t finalized until Monday – it was Caparrós’ petition that Lendoiro fulfilled at the last minute. The Sevillan winger wasn't part of Juande Ramos' plans and for that reason he decided to move to Vitoria Guimarães in Portugal. He arrived there on January 15th at the beginning of the winter market, but a few days later realized it wasn't a smart move and asked for a new transfer.
The winger received several offers, but at the end decided to choose Depor. In la Coruña he found the coach who promoted him to the first squad at Sevilla: Joaquín Caparrós. The Sevillan player was part of Spain’s U-21 national squad and made his Primera debut in 2001. He has spent three seasons at Sevilla and one at Getafe and has scored five goals.

Yesterday Gallardo admitted that his move to Deportivo was a surprise to him: "My arrival at Depor is a quick and surprising move for me. Three weeks ago I traveled to Vitoria Guimarães, but it wasn't the right place for me and last Friday I decided to leave the club. Later on Monday I received a call from Deportivo."

The Sevillan player also said that this is a positive step in his career and he promised hard work and results: "Who would say no to Deportivo? This move is an important step and one of the reasons I came here is because I will be coached one more time by Caparrós. I realized what a good coach he is after I was no longer with him. I want to help the squad reach its objectives, without too much noise and without losing the rhythm of the team."

REVIEW: VALENCIA 1 - DEPORTIVO 1 (COPA)

02 Feb 2006 -- Deportivo qualified for the semifinals thanks to a penalty scored by Víctor. The game was restarted behind closed doors at the Mestalla after legal action taken by Lendoiro in order to postpone the game. Deportivo dominated the first minutes and soon Albelda pushed Senel, giving a penalty opportunity to the Galicians. They will now meet Espanyol in the semifinals.

BEFORE THE GAME Caparrós changed his lineup compared to the one presented last week. Coloccini moved to defense while De Guzmán entered the starting eleven. Víctor replaced Scaloni and Arizmendi started as second striker. The big novelty was the presence of Senel. The youngster had the responsibility of searching for the goal that Depor needed to win the leg.

In Valencia, Quique Sánchez Flores had to change his lineup due to Marchena’s red card. David Navarro entered the starting eleven and Pablo Aimar left the lineup. In this sense, David Villa was the main hope of achieving the needed goal. With the aggregate score showing a 1-1 draw, both teams needed to score once and not to allow any goals in order to advance.

THE MISSING MINUTE As was dictated by the RFEF, the game restarted in the 44th minute. With one minute on the clock, both teams knew that any error would be fatal, and for that reason they adopted a passive attitude and nothing happened during the minutes played.

SECOND HALF After a five minute pause the game was restarted. The first opportunity was a Manuel Pablo cross that Albiol cleared. Deportivo continued to enjoy of some clear chances and later De Guzmán was fouled near Valencia's area. Capdevila took a free kick, but his shot missed the target.

Eight minutes later the situation was the opposite, Manuel Pablo was booked for a late challenge and Valencia had a dangerous free kick in their favour. But Molina contained the ball without too many troubles. Later, Villa fell to the grass in Depor's area, but the referee Megía Dávila didn't award a penalty. In the following play, goalkeeper Butelle wasn't able to properly deflect a shot by Munitis, and then Albelda pushed Senel when the youngster was trying to reach the ball. This time Megía Dávila pointed to the penalty spot.

Víctor scored the important equalizer and Valencia needed to score twice to advance. For that reason coach Flores sent Kluivert and Aimar on the pitch, in place of Miguel and Albelda respectively. The Valencians searched for victory and had it in Kluivert’s boots, but the Dutch striker missed his opportunity. The home side continued in search of a goal but it was too late and the game ended 1-1.

AFTER THE GAME Deportivo qualified for the semifinals thanks to a 2-1 aggregate score. They will now meet RCD Espanyol in a date to be announced. The other semifinal will be between Real Madrid and Zaragoza. The maños eliminated Barcelona and now they will try to replicate their performance from two seasons ago when they defeated the Madrilians in the final.

REVIEW: DEPORTIVO 0 - 1 VALENCIA (LA LIGA)

05 Feb 2006 -- Deportivo suffered another home defeat last night against Valencia, bringing the total number of home defeats to five. But this match will be remembered for a crazy first half, during which David Villa scored a beautiful goal from more than forty meters, while Victor squandered two penalties just minutes later. In the end Valencia got their revenge for the Copa exit and are still in the race for the Liga title, while Depor will have to catch up again after lying six points away from the Champions League positions.

BEFORE THE MATCH Both teams were struggling with a number of absentees, so Caparros and Flores had to improvise in their lineups. Valeron, Andrade (both injured) and De Guzman (suspension) were all missing for Deportivo. Valencia had even more problems, with Mista, Kluivert (both injured), Baraja and Marchena (both suspended) missing along other long term absentees like Vicente.
But the surprises were kept to a minimum by the two coaches. Tristan was relegated to the bench once again, as Capa opted for Senel and Arizmendi in the striking zone. Meanwhile, Angulo, Navarro and Albelda found their way in the starting eleven for Valencia.
Before the match, it was already known that Real Madrid had won against Espanyol, leaving Valencia on the third spot, and a win was necessary to climb back in the second position. Even more, this match was an opportunity for Valencia to seek out revenge for the Copa exit earlier this week. For Deportivo is was also an important match, a victory would improve the shaky home record as well as bring them closer to an European spot.

THE FIRST HALF The match started with Valencia in control, pressing and trying to recover the ball as soon as possible, a tactic that prevented Deportivo from starting any dangerous attacks. On the counter, Villa and Aimar were having good moments againt a slow Deportivo defense. This how the first chance for Valencia arrived, when Aimar fell after a foul just 20 meters away from Molina's goal. Villa took the shot but Molina managed to deflect it into the post with a miraculous save. Minutes later Depor also had the first chance when Victor faked a shot from inside the box to wrongfoot the Valencian defense and the cooly placed a shot that hit the post.
The match became more balanced as Valencia were giving away more space, but still neither team could create any real danger until Villa picked up a ball near the middle of the pitch. The Valencian striker saw Molina out of the goal and tried his luck with a very precise shot that Molina couldn't reach in time, making it 0-1. Deportivo reacted and started to press harder, but the long passes inside the box for Senel and Arizmendi were rarely a menace to Canizares until a hand ball in the area awarded Deportivo a penalty. Victor missed the first try but the referee decided that the penalty must be retaken as Valencian players had enetered the box too early. Victor also took the second penalty and missed again after Canizares held onto his weak shot. Afterwards Depor went looking for the equalizer, but the Valencian defense held firm.

THE SECOND HALF Capa made a first substitution during the break, replacing Senel with Tristan, but the effects were negligible during the first minutes. Valencia were defending well, while Depor was only sending long balls into their area. Still, it was again such a situation that should have ended in a penalty when Tristan was clearly fouled in the box, but the referee decided to look away.

With another home defeat around the corner, Capa decided to push the attack and sent Xisco in for Manuel Pablo, but it was Arizmendi who had the biggest opportunity towards the end. His header could only be deflected by Canizares into a corner. Still, Valencia held on the result and inflicted another painful defeat for Deportivo at the Riazor.

AFTER THE MATCH Deportivo suffered the fifth home defeat this season, and together with other three draws at the Riazor it raises serious doubts about their ability to manage home matches and thus to gain those necessary points in the fight for a European spot. Valencia on the other hand climb back into second position, and continue to fight for the title, with Real Madrid close behind.

REVIEW: ESPANYOL 2 - DEPORTIVO 1 (COPA)

10 Feb 2006 -- Deportivo failed in their mission of achieving a positive result in Montjuic. Two doubtful penalties and a late goal of Pandiani were the decisive plays on this game. Depor controlled the actions, but Coloccini's red card in the second half changed the scenario. Now the Galicians need to find the victory in a place in which they are suffering a lot recently: Riazor.

BEFORE TO THE GAME As it was expected, Caparrós send a cautious formation with Coloccini and Duscher in midfield, Andrade returned to the starting lineup after he surpassed his ankle problems, while the duo Arizmendi-Rubén Castro started has the offensive couple for Depor. In Espanyol the big surprise was the presence of De La Peña on the bench, instead coach Lotina preferred the combination between Luis García and Walter Pandiani.

FIRST HALF Although both coaches were expecting to see a cautious game, the first minutes were frenetic. Jofre had the first chance of the night with a shot that was stopped by Molina just seconds after the start. Two minutes later Arizmendi fell down to the grass and the referee allowed the penalty, it was a very doubtful call of Medina Cantalejo. Rubén Castro scored from the penalty spot and Deportivo took the advantage in a promising start.

Pandiani appeared a couple minutes later with a shot that passed inches away from the post, the reply of Depor was an action that ended with three players against the goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz, but Rubén failed to score and the young keeper sent the ball to a corner-kick. The next minutes were tedious, the rhythm of the game was interrupted with several fouls and own mistakes committed by both sides.
Espanyol was missing the presence of De la Peña. Without organisation, the Catalans were suffering from a lack of ideas in order to reach Molina. The Galicians were doing their game and waiting for a new opportunity to score, Rubén was the most dangerous man of Depor and a new shot made by him was cleared out by Gorka just when the second goal seemed to arrive. The first half ended like its started: with emotion in Depor's area. Pandiani sent a powerful shot that hit the post, it was the most clear opportunity for Espanyol.

SECOND HALF Caparrós sent Diego Tristán in order to replace Arizmendi and the modification started to give good results. Firstly, the Sevillan striker received a pass from Rubén that ended in Gorka's hands, later an assistance made by Tristán was received by Rubén, but a late effort of the Espanyol's keeper ended in a new corner for Depor. But the things changed in a couple of minutes, a corner-kick of the home side was supposedly handed by Andrade and Medina Cantalejo allowed another doubtful penalty. Luis García equalised the game.

Two minutes later Coloccini saw a red card for a hard tackle against Jofre. Deportivo was dominating the first minutes and suddenly, the scenario changed with Espanyol's goal and the expulsion of the Argentinean defender. The reaction of Caparrós was immediately and he sent Sergio to replace Rubén in a intent to recover the balance in midfield. Meanwhile, Lotina introduced De la Peña for Armado Sá, the Catalans knew that Depor's goal counts as double and they were trying to achieve the win that would give them the advantage in this series.

The Catalans were in a better position and they searched the winning goal with a greater effort, this time they were commanded by De la Peña. Just when the game was ending Walter Pandiani appeared once again to give more pain to Deportivo, De la Peña sent the ball to the box and el rifle received it after several rebounds, then he sent a shot that passed between the legs of one defender. There wasn’t enough time to react and the game ended with the joy of the home side.

AFTER THE MATCH Deportivo failed to achieve a positive result in Barcelona, now the Galicians need a victory at the Riazor in order to advance into the final. A 1-0 win will be enough, but Caparrós' team must be careful since a new goal of Espanyol will complicate the desired qualification.

REVIEW: BETIS 0 - 1 DEPORTIVO (LA LIGA)

12 Feb 2006 -- Deportivo bounced back after a series of bad results that culminated with a defeat against Espanyol in the Copa del Rey. Ruben was the hero of the night as he broke a firm deadlock in the dying minutes of the match, bringing Depor closer to Europe and Betis closer to the Segunda.

BEFORE THE MATCH There was much speculation surrounding the lineup Serra Ferrer would present against Deportivo, due to the absences of Rivera and Varela. Finally, Betis' coach decided to use both Oscar Lopez and Tardelli as starters, while Assuncao was left on the bench.
At Deportivo there were only minor problems for Caparros, not counting Valeron's long term absence. Only Coloccini missed the match due to suspension, but his place was well covered by Juanma, while Andrade returned to the lineup after an injury. But Depor's coach is still looking for a successful formula to replace the Canarian's absence and this time he decided to use De Guzman along Duscher in the midfield and Romero on the left, giving Munitis the task to support Diego Tristan up front.

THE FIRST HALF Lorenzo Serra Ferrer no doubt insisted during the week on the mental aspects of the game, following the four goals Betis conceded against Zaragoza in only few minutes. The consequence was a very cautious and rigid Betis, trying to score a goal against a defensive Deportivo. But Romero and Capdevila had a firm grip on Betis' engine, Joaquin, while Munitis and Tristan found themselved isolated among the green-white defense. The Sevillans still produced an opportunity that forced De Guzman to clear the ball off the line, but their offensive power decreased with time.

It was Deportivo's turn to try to score a goal, and Victor came close on the half-hour, when his shot bounced off the post, with Doblas beaten. The half ended on a low note for Betis, when captain Capi had to leave the pitch injured. Assuncao replaced him, making a comeback after a month of absence and playing his 100th match in Betis' shirt.

THE SECOND HALF After the break, Betis returned very determined to score a goal, but the lack of creative plays was obvious in Serra Ferrer's team. Only Dani threatened Molina's goal during the first fifteen minutes. Meanwhile, Depor failed to take advantage of Betis' inability to attack and seemed to be content with a draw.

But with Depor's defense starting to crack under pressure, Caparros reacted and sent Arizmendi and Ruben to replace the fatigued Tristan and Munitis. Then, in the last minutes of the match, both teams had their chances to score, but it was finally Ruben who had an excellent finish after a cross from Romero.

AFTER THE MATCH Deportivo proved again that they are much more comfortable playing away from the Riazor, speculating on counterattacks. This win, while not enough to enter the European spots, places them only two points away. Betis on the other hand are going the opposite way, as they are again close to the relegation.

REVIEW: DEPORTIVO 1 - 1 ZARAGOZA (LA LIGA)

19 Feb 2006 -- Deportivo and Zaragoza shared the spoils in a match in which both goals were scored from set pieces. Gallardo finally made his debut for Deportivo, but couldn't turn the match around, while Coloccini left his team outnumbered during the last ten minutes of the game.

BEFORE THE MATCH
Deportivo was still looking for a convincing strategy to tackle home matches, after Valeron left a huge gap in the attack. For this reason Caparros tested several combinations during the training sessions this week. In the end he decided to bench Juanma, giving Coloccini a starting position, while the attack was also shuffled. Munitis returned to the wing and Ruben accompanied Arizmendi up front.

For Zaragoza there were no important changes in the lineup, and Víctor Muñoz bet again on the successful attacking duo, Ewerthon and Diego Milito. The stakes were also very high for Zaragoza, since Deportivo is a direct rival. A win would have brought them only one point behind the Galicians.

THE FIRST HALF
Deportivo started the match with the same problems in the attacking phase, while Zaragoza tried to play a direct football. The objective of the visitors was to put the two in-form strikers to use as soon as possible. But it was Deportivo who had the first opportunity through Arizmendi after only four minutes. The speedy striker left his marker standing but could not put the ball past César, who managed to block. The match entered a less than exciting phase afterwards, as both teams were struggling to find their way in a heavy rain. So it was during a freekick that Zaragoza managed to open the score. Ponzio crossed at the long post, where Alvaro returned the ball for Diego Milito to score an easy goal past a paralyzed Deportivo defense.

Afterwards, Deportivo tried to react, but the bad weather and the lack of creativity in the attack hindered tht Galicians to have any serious chances. Duscher tried to take on the role of playmaker, but couldn't really commit to this position because of his defensive tasks. But he still managed to save his team from entering with a two goal deificit at half time, when Oscar threatened Molina's goal.

THE SECOND HALF
Caparros performed two changes during the break, admitting that things didn't go as planned. Sergio and Gallardo entered the pitch instead of Victor and De Guzman, thus keeping the same system. Shortly after he made the last change when he sent in Tristan to replace Arizmendi. But it was Munitis who managed to score the equalizer, again after a set piece. César was expecting a cross from the Cantabrian player, so Munitis surprised him with a direct shot that entered the goal. Deportivo then started to search for the winning goal, creating danger especially on the right wing. But the Galicians were unable to break the deadlock, and Coloccini was sent off with a straight red, just ten minutes before the end. Caparros, with no changes left, ordered Duscher to cover the position and it was Zaragoza's turn to try and win the match. But Víctor Muñoz's men must have felt frustrated when Molina had some very confident saves, ending the match in a draw that benefits neither of the teams.

AFTER THE MATCH
Deportivo couldn't take advantage of the opportunity to level with Celta, and must now also surpass Villareal on the way to a European spot. Even more, their home record is very worrying, while Caparros seems to be unable to find a working solution. Zaragoza meanwhile seem to lose contact with the teams fighting for a place in Europe, and could also be overtaken by Atletico later tonight.

REVIEW: BARCELONA 3 - 2 DEPORTIVO (LA LIGA)

05 Mar 2006 -- Deportivo were unable to come out as winners after a roller coaster of a match, that saw both teams take the lead in turns. The Galicians proved again to be a big threat when playing away, but it wasn't enough to defeat a resilient and dangerous Barcelona.

BEFORE THE MATCH
Frank Rijkaard made it clear before the match that he will rest Messi for the upcoming Champions League game, while the participation of Ronaldinho and Eto'o was also in doubt. Finally, the dutch coach decided to take no risks with Deportivo, and sent in a very offensive formation, with both stars in the lineup. Larsson also started on a rare occasion to replace Messi, while Iniesta played instead of the newly recovered Giuly.

Caparros also sent in a predictable formation, with Victor and Romero on the wings, and Munitis playing behind the sole striker, Arizmendi. Tristan, Ruben, De Guzman and Gallardo had to wait for their chance on the sidelines.

THE FIRST HALF
Barcelona started the match with little doubt about their intentions and it was soon clear that Depor's defense would have another difficult night. Only three minutes after the start, Iniesta won a freekick in front of the Galician area and Ronaldinho converted with little hope for Molina, making it 1-0. Depor then started to look for an equaliser, but Munitis and Arizmendi were isolated up front, having to fight for every ball. Set pieces and long shots seemed to be the only offensive instruments of the Galicians and both Arizmendi and Duscher went close on a couple of occasions.

Then, after a quarter of an hour, Juanma scored the equalizer from a corner executed by Munitis. It was the second corner in a row for Depor who were pressuring for a goal, while Barca were speculating on the counter attack. At the other goal, Eto'o and Larsson were also close to scoring, but Molina frustrated their actions with some good saves. Just as Depor seemed to crack under pressure, Andrade scored a second goal for the Galicians. Munitis took a freekick from 40 meters out only for Andrade to break the offside trap and score with a header.

Depor's lead didn't last long though, as Larsson scored the equalizer only five minutes later, from a Ronaldinho corner, as Manuel Pablo couldn't stop the ball on the line. The former had another chance to score from a similar position as for the first goal, but his shot went wide and the match went into half-time.

THE SECOND HALF
Both coaches made a change during the break, with Van Bommerl replacing an ineffective Iniesta, while De Guzman came in for Duscher, who was risking expulsion after being booked in the first half.

Barca started the second half very much like the first, creating danger on almost every attack. Meanwhile, Depor was unable to start any decent attack, Romero and Victor were too busy helping in the defense, leaving Munitis and Arizmendi alone. As the posession was shifting decisively in favor of the Catalan team, Andrade had to be replaced after an injury, and Cesar came in. Then, only one minute later, Eto'o broke the deadlock scoring a goal from a corner.

With nothing to lose, Caparros reacted and sent in Tristan for Romero, moving Munitis to the left. But there was little change in the outcome of the match, Barcelona were dominating and pressing for even more goals, while Depor was unable to mount any convincing offensive.

AFTER THE MATCH
Deportivo failed to make any progress in reaching the European spots, and although they are only six points away from the fourth spot, Celta, Villareal, Osasuna and Sevilla are in the way. Barcelona on the other hand can look forward to their Champions League match, as the Liga title is almost a formality.

ANDRADE OUT FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON

The serious injury of Jorge Andrade was confirmed by Canaldeportivo. The Portuguese player passed trough surgery yesterday in order to correct his problem in the knee. The Portuguese defender clashed with his own goalkeeper Jose Molina in the second half and later tests revealed that he has torn the patellar tendon in his left knee. Now, Andrade will expend five or six months in rehabilitation meaning that he will miss the rest of the season and the World Cup

The injury of Andrade caused reactions in Portugal, the national coach, Luiz Felipe Scolari had words for the defender: "It's bad news for us, but Jorge Andrade will always be part of our group, even if he isn't in good conditions. If he wants he can travel with the rest of the men to Germany, he's part of a team that always will count with him."

The president of the Portuguese federation, Gilberto Madaíl also had words to support Andrade: "I want to send a strong huge to Jorge Andrade and I want to think that he will have a quick recovery. I also want to say that my federation is putting all its resources in order to help him."

REVIEW: DEPORTIVO 0 - 1 REAL SOCIEDAD (LA LIGA)

12 Mar 2006 -- Deportivo failed once again to convert the advantage of playing at home and Europe seems far away after this defeat. Caparros' men dominated the match but could not crack a solid Basque defense, while Sociedad managed to score from a corner.

BEFORE THE MATCH
Caparros again had to cope with important absences for this match. Along with Andrade and Valeron, who are out with long term injuries, Duscher was also unavailable because of suspension. For this reason, Coloccini was moved to the midfield to cover the absence of his conational, while Cesar started a match for the first time this season, partnering Juanma in the central defense.

In the offense, Caparros decided to give the Tristan and Ruben duo a chance to prove themselves, while Gallardo replaced Victor on the right wing. Munitis and Sergio completed the midfield of this formation.

Meanwhile, coach Gonzalo Arconada was also shuffling his team, covering the absences of Kovacevic and Novo. The good news for the Basques was the recovery of danish striker Skoubo who was finally included in the starting lineup to accomany Nihat. Arconada was facing his possibly last match as coach of Sociedad; the bad situation of the team and the quality of the play showed in the last matches prompted the club president to give him an ultimatum earlier this week.

THE FIRST HALF
Deportivo started the match resolute to score as soon as possible and break the curse of the Riazor. Sociedad were content to defend carefully and it was not too difficult in front of an insistent but finally predictable Deportivo. The first opportunities came logically for the Galicians, who threatened the goal with shots from Ruben and Tristan. The latter was active during the first minutes and Gallardo's crosses were searching him all the time.

Unfortunately, Gallardo injured himself just before the thirty minutes mark, and Capa had to react, by sending Ivan Carril on the pitch and making this the most offensive formation used so far this season. The young forward was involved in many of Depor's offensive efforts, but could not find the decisive touch. In the end it was Sergio who had the biggest opportunity for Deportivo, but his powerful shot was stopped by Alberto. The Galicians ended the first half attacking, and gathering a crushing posession of 64%, but without any goals scored.

THE SECOND HALF
The second half had a totally different flavour than the first. Sociedad started to attack from the start and they managed to open the score in the first minute. Garitano placed a powerful header after a cornerkick, Molina and Manuel Pablo scrambled to save it but failed to do so.

The match changed from then on, Sociedad were more present in the game and started creating problems for Deportivo, who were struggling to find the equalizer. Only ten minutes into the second half, both coaches performed some changes. Caparros replaced Cesar with Arizmendi, pushing Coloccini back in the defensive line and strengthening the attack, while Arconada substituted Skoubo with Xabi Prieto.

But the rest of the half didn't bring any big opportunities for either team. Sociedad failed to profit from Depor's attacking strategy that often left the Galicians open in the back, while Depor's forwards which were later helped by a fresh Victor could not find the net.

AFTER THE MATCH
Deportivo dissapointed once again on their home pitch, and the participation in Europe seems less likely for the Galician set. But for Real Sociedad, this match was a breath of fresh air, as they can distance themselves from the relegation zone.
