The Design
This sleek all in one device is attractive, but a tad thick. It feels real comfortable in your hands and does not feel like you have a brick up to your head. The 8125 feels very solid and I know it will hold up to some pretty severe conditions. Unless HTC slacked off on this batch of Wizards, The 8125 can take a swim in the toilet for 10 second and fall from 5 foot at least two times. (disclaimer : I do not recommend trying this at home) Both of these tragic events have occurred with my I-mate KJam.

The Cingular 8125 is a sleek looking device with silver metallic finish. The buttons are spread out a little more than most are used to, but they work just fine. The directional navigation pad with the center select button work great navigating with one hand. One thing to note, except the Talk, End, and soft keys, all the buttons are programmable. The 320x240 2.8" display is very bright.

On the bottom of the device, you will find the stereo headphone jack, the mini-USB connection for syncing and charging, lanyard loop(Manual doesn't mention it, but that's what it looks like), and stylus silo.

The camera button acts as the take picture button and loads the photo application as well. With Windows Mobile 5, I am not sure what this reset button does, as I barely have had to use it. The IR is right in the middle of this side. The voice speed dial button brings up an application where you can voice dial. If you hold the button down, it acts as the voice recording button.

The wireless button brings up the wireless control center where you can turn WiFi, Bluetooth, and Audio on and off. On this screen you can also bring up the Active Sync application. If you hold down the wireless button, you can toggle the audio from on to vibrate. The volume slider controls volume of the device's audio when not in call and in call it adjust the call volume.

Pretty strait forward here, Power Button and Mini SD slot. The power button does a little trick if you hold it down for a few seconds. It puts you device to sleep. A prompt will ask you if its ok, if you choose yes it puts the 8125 into a deep sleep and the only way to wake it is to hold down power again. When it turns back on, it goes through the ROM post like a soft reset. During this deep sleep, it can not be awakened by a pesky alarm or calls.

In this photo, you can see the battery compartment where the SIMM card is housed. If you look close, you will notice the HTC Innovations logo. The 1250mah battery is replaceable and packs some impressive battery times. The I-mate Kjam has a switch on the base of the unit to "pop" the back cover off, but the Cingular 8125 slides down to reveal the battery compartment. In addition to the camera with flash and self portrait mirror, you will see a rubber foot on the battery cover. This foot adds a little depth, but protects the camera and prevent the unit from sliding. (most of the time)

Features

WiFi
The WiFi performance is nothing special, it just works. I got average reception on the Hot Spots I've used.

Bluetooth
The 8125 was paired up with two of my Bluetooth headsets, Scala 500 and Bluespoon Axe2, with no problems and was accomplished quickly. The reception of the signal to each of them was fine with the 8125 in my hands or on a table nearby, but once I placed the unit in my pocket, I had complaints of fading in and out. Bluetooth is line of sight, so I suggest having the unit on the same side of your body as the headset.

Phone
When you pop your Cingular SIMM card in and turn the 8125 on for the first time, the ROM loads and then a series of Cingular installations occur. In these are the settings for all the Cingular networks and EDGE/GPRS Settings. This means you don't have to run out and find the settings to manually configure the device like I had to with the Kjam.

As a phone, it just plain works. Nothing fancy, no complaints about my voice quality. The speakerphone lacks as well, the audio is cracks and pops when volume set full, but when volume is lowered, you can not hear it as well.

One of the only drawbacks to this phone is the method of dialing. If you don't have voice tags set up, you have to hit the phone button and either tap the software phone pad or use you contact list. With a keyboard based model like the HP 6515 or Treo 700w, you can dial without touching the screen. Voice tags are simple to setup though, you select a contact, hold down and bring up the menu, then select add voice tag.

Camera
The 1.3 megapixel camera is good for a chance occasion, but you won't be taking portraits or action shots at your son's baseball game.

Performance
Believe it or not, this thing is not as sluggish as the 200mhz (shows as 195mhz in device manager) would lead you to believe. Its not the Dell Axim X51v with its wonderful multimedia capability, but it will run a movie, play music, and run games fine. You definitely have to do some management to ensure you have no extra programs running in the background though. With the Kjam, I have seldom had to do a soft reset, just close programs left open and all is well.

Comparing the feel of the device speed in real life scenarios, The 8125 and Kjam are just as peppy as the iPAQ hw6515, but a tad slower than the Palm Treo 700w. It would be unfair to compare its responsiveness to a Pocket PC only device like the Dell Axim X51v or iPAQ hx4700.

In the long run, if you want this for a phone with a Pocket PC built in, you will like it. The battery life is a great trade off for the CPU speeds. I would rather know that I will make it through a day without draining the battery than watch Shrek 2 at work. If you are looking for a Pocket PC that has a built in phone, you may be a little disappointed.

Using SPB Benchmark has given some hurdles to reviewers on devices running Windows Mobile 5, so I have included the above graphs. Many tests failed and this is all we can report as other tests were inconclusive. Note that the Kjam and Cingular 8125 are the same device basically, but the ROMs are more current on the 8125.

Battery
Battery life on the Cingular 8125 is superb. The device has a 1250mah replaceable battery. From using the I-mate Kjam, I can tell you that in 2-3 months, I was able to go two days without charging in most cases. A battery drain test with Bluetooth on playing music constantly gave an amazing 13 hours. The processor has a lot to do with the excellent battery performance.

If you have ever seen the I-mate Kjam, you will notice that this keyboard has square keys and the Kjam has round buttons. These keys are much better for a fat fingered geek like myself. Take a look at the two rectangular buttons above the QWERTY keys, these two buttons mirror the operation of the soft keys that also appear lined up with the options they control on the front.

Software
We've all seen Windows Mobile 5 in action by now, but if you haven't you can glance at my first look published a while back. Other than that, there is very little as far as custom application and add ons that come with the Cingular 8125. One thing I really miss is the I-Mate Backgammon that comes with the Kjam. Another application that does not come with the 8125 is Skype, it was included but has trouble running on the Kjam.

Conclusion
I really like this device. Other than GPS, which I only use on occasion, this thing is the complete package. It has good data speeds, a great sounding phone, and a built in Pocket PC that ain't too shabby. The slide out keyboard makes web browsing (lots of forum posting) a snap. The camera is useless, but who uses a camera on a phone anyway? The Cingular 8125 has a great form factor that is a tad thick, but very pocketable. With the mini SD card, I can load this device up with all the mindless games I like to play. If I had to pick one device I have tested to carry for an extended period of time, it would be a toss up between this and the iPAQ 6515, with the 8125 winning out due to its superb battery life.
