Nokia's 5230 inches closer to release, gets spied along the way



Nokia's 5230 isn't apt to blow any minds with the likes of the HD2, Droid and XPERIA X3 on the horizon, but for those perfectly content with a touchscreen-based Symbian S60 5th Edition handset, this one sure looks purty. After dipping its toes in the FCC's expansive database just last month, a crop of new in the wild shots have surfaced to show off its 3.2-inch display (640 x 360), 2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR module and variety of colorful backs. UK: The N in Nokia’s Nseries stands for not recommended



Long time Nokia (NYSE: NOK) fanbois and fangirls know that Nokia’s Nseries devices pack the latest hardware and software inside, albeit at the cost of some instability, while the Eseries packs the hardware and software from the previous generation, but thankfully has been matured and made highly stable, and finally the numbered devices, 6220 Classic for example, are tried and tested and practically bulletproof. As time goes on however, the Nseries appears to be getting more and more buggy, prompting a mobile shop owner who prefers to remain anonymous to say:

    “I’ve found myself advising customers to wait three to four months from a [high-end] N-Series handset’s initial release before purchasing, as we expect all of them to have flaws in the original release.”

I’ve personally jumped back and forth, starting with a Nokia E61, then getting a N95, then E61i, then N82, and now I’m using an E71. Nothing in today’s Nseries lineup excites me. But back to software stability: one thing I can depend on is quick software updates that fix any bugs I may run into. The imported models I used to purchase were usually Finnish, and now living in Finland I obviously get Finnish models. Nokia smartphone buyers in the UK however have to wait a few more weeks for their software updates. What does Nokia UK have to say about this?

    “The team are working hard to speed up the process and ensure consumers in the UK and around the rest of the world can get all software updates as soon as possible.”

A typical recycled and well rehearsed public relations line. The UK has it bad, the USA is the worst however. Software updates usually don’t even come out for American variants.

What’s up Nokia, isn’t the Nseries supposed to be your premium brand? The Ferrari of your device lineup?

Nokia N900 is now shipping!



Nokia's Maemo-based future has begun: the N900 is shipping. According to Nokia CEO, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, the eagerly awaited handset is now en route to at least some pre-order customers. We'll soon see if this new generation of Nokia smartphones will be enough to generate the type of mass-market / high-margin appeal that Nokia needs at the top end of its product portfolio or if it's just a tentative first step on a potentially wobbly new platform.

Nokia E72 in stores now



The highly-anticipated Nokia E72, a device tailor-made for business and personal messaging is now available in stores. To coincide with the arrival of the Nokia E72, Nokia has also released research* revealing that more people rely on email than on traditional phone calls or text messaging when sending and responding to critical information.



Speaking about the research results, Nokia vice president Ukko Lappalainen said, “The research shows that people are spending an average of five full days per year – equivalent to a full work week – responding to emails. Half of us (46 percent) choose email over voice or text to send and receive important information. The Nokia E72 was designed exactly with this kind of person in mind – it allows the owner to be more responsive and communicate how they want, whenever they want and wherever they are.”

The Nokia E72 builds on the formula from Nokia’s most successful full QWERTY keyboard device, the Nokia E71, and adds important new functionality such as desktop-like email and chat experiences. Morevoer, the latest version of Ovi Maps with A-GPS navigation and compass, an optical navi key and 5 megapixel camera are all packed into the sleek, beautifully-designed handset.

The Nokia E72 also comes with Nokia’s push consumer email service, Nokia Messaging, and now for the first time people can set up instant messaging (IM) directly from the homescreen, accessing communities such as Windows Live(TM) Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, Google Talk and Ovi Chat. Just like chatting via the desktop, people can respond to friends and colleagues across multiple communities in real-time.



The Nokia E72 can also accommodate multiple work and personal email accounts and, with separate profiles for work and play, allows people to be flexible when it comes to choosing how, when, where and who to respond to. While work emails rank as the most important messages to receive, they are not necessarily the most urgent messages to respond to. According to Nokia’s research, half of respondents (49 percent) prioritise their partners ahead of their bosses or managers (29 percent), colleagues (23 percent) and even customers (31 percent).

Nokia Mystic


Nokia may be snubbing the MWC but it seems they’ll show a new phone at CES pretty soon – a new Eseries perhaps, known as the Nokia Mystic for now. With clear Nokia E63 heritage this new smartphone sports a full QWERTY keyboard and rather compact body.

For now the only additional info we have about the Nokia Mystic is that it has a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash. Nokia should officially announce the Mystic at CES, which starts today and ends on Sunday.
