Nokia N85 in all its glory
Ten Minutes Long Hands On!

Here is another detailed 'hands on' video from the folks over at Italian’s Cellulare Magazine blog. The following video is exactly 10 minutes long and shows the Nokia N85 in all its glory, nearly a perfect weekend watching!

Samsung INNOV8 is probably the best S60 handset at the moment but Nokia N85 is undoubtedly right behind, the latest Nokia Nseries phone is made to set new standards for mobile entertainment, gaming and sharing, especially with an eye-catching 2.6" OLED screen, smooth, sleek finish and the dual sliding form factor.

Phone is equipped with in-built FM transmitter, 5 MPX camera sensor supported with famous Carl Zeiss optics, geotagging capabilities and the very disappointing Dual led flash instead the superior and incomparable better Xenon solution.

It's been almost two years since Nokia has announced Nokia N95 and its original and innovative dual-sliding form factor has evolved to become smaller and sleeker and hopefully better but the build in hardware isn’t as impressive unfortunately.

Although it supports most of the latest technologies like; OLED screen, GPS, 3.5G HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity, 5 megapixel camera, DVD-quality videos recording at 30 frames per second and comes with 8 GB microSD card in box it still fails to take the leading position in the Smartphone world.

Hands on Nokia N85

Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice phone, OLED screen is great improvement, but its resolution is totally insufficient for most of the tasks including the web browsing, working with office documents and multimedia. QVGA is maybe OK for the mid-range dummy phone but it is totally outdate solution for one high-end Smartphone. There is no excuse for forcing the QVGA screens while the all other major brands have the bunch of High-resolution mobile phones and I believe it is one of the reasons current Nokia’s sales woes.

Dual led flash is of course better than the single led solution but it can be hardly compared to powerful Xenon flash which indeed requires more power and more space for putting the massive capacitor It is small price to pay for all the benefits and better photos in lower lighting conditions and indoors generally.

With just a slightly better screen, Xenon flash and Texas’s chipset it will be nearly better phone but even with all this downsides it worth waiting and getting instead of the Nokia N96.

Rumor: Nokia 5800 Tube to be release in the UK on October 8th

Nokia is always saying they will try their best to release their first touchscreen handset before the end of the year, though most people think they’re just trying to save face.

Nokia could be forgiven, since their most recently announced devices seem to be pretty kick-ass even if they don’t have touchscreens, but still things would be sweeter if that tap-activated glass contraption comes into the picture.

Well, it looks like Nokia fanboys may finally get what they want right on schedule, after all. An anonymous source is saying that the Nokia 5800 Tube, which has been well documented in leaks all over the Internet (heck, it’s already made an appearance in a movie!), will be released in the UK as early as October 8th. It will feature a touchscreen and will be Nokia’s first device with Series 60 5th Edition running underneath.

Maybe we’re just excited about it finally being released, and although even Nokia has said it won’t be their best effort at a touchscreen handset, it would be nice to see just how far the company has come after all this time of making us wait.

If October 8th is really the release date, it also means that the device should start to get leaked again very very soon. So keep your eyes peeled for any clues, and let our wait for October 8th begin!

Nokia 5800 Tube press shot leaks into the wilds

One day after Google goes touchscreen, along comes what looks to be an official press shot of Nokia's 5800 XpressMusic -- aka, the Tube. No new details here, though Nokia appears to have cleaned up the industrial design around the buttons of some of those earlier prototypes we've seen. October 2nd looks like the date that we'll finally get our fill of the first S60 Touch handset. Though given the number of leaks and rabid competition Nokia faces in the touchscreen OS space -- our appetite for this device might be quickly satiated.

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

While it may not be Nokia's first touchscreen phone (anyone out there remember the 7710?), the 5800 XpressMusic is certainly the first to come out of Finland with a mainstream appeal. What we've alternately known as the "Tube" throughout much of its development cycle is the first production device to run S60 5th Edition -- the fourth major overhaul of Nokia's ubiquitous smartphone platform since 2002 and the first to support fingers, styli, and high-res displays. Speaking of high-res displays, the 5800 comes equipped with an impressive 3.2-inch 640 x 360 resistive touchscreen to go along with its 3.2-megapixel autofocus cam, Carl Zeiss optics, dual LED flash, GPS, WiFi, 3.5mm jack, and a microSD slot with support for 16GB cards. It'll be available in three versions -- European HSDPA, North American HSDPA, and GSM only -- and ships this quarter in black, red, and blue for €279 (about $392) unlocked with an 8GB card thrown in for good measure. Music fans with voracious appetites for new tunes might want to hold out, though, for the Comes With Music-equipped version that follows on "early next year" at a to-be-announced price.

Nokia 5800 - touch-enabled, mid-range, music-focussed S60 phone

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, a mid-range music-focussed phone, was launched today in London. It is Nokia's first touch enabled S60 phone. It runs S60 5th Edition on Symbian OS 9.5, has a 3.2" nHD (360 x 640) touch screen, WLAN and 3G connectivity, a 3.2 megapixel auto-focus camera, integrated A-GPS and accelerometer and proximity sensors. To underline its music potential, the 5800 has a standard 3.5mm audio jack, stereo speakers, ships with a 8GB microSD card and will be one of the first phones to support Comes with Music (Q1 2009). It will be available worldwide in Q4 for 279 Euros (£215) before taxes and subsidies. Read on for much more.

The front of the device is dominated by the 3.2 inch nHD screen, there are three buttons along the bottom (right to left: end key, S60/home key, and send key) and a single button on the top right of the device which activates the media bar (a similar arrangement to the multimedia key on Nseries devices). The left hand side of the phone has a microSD card slot, the top of the phone houses a miniUSB connector, 3.5mm audio port, 2mm power port and the power button. The right hand side of the device has volume keys, a key-lock slider and camera capture button. The back of the device houses the 3.2 megapixel auto focus camera which boasts Carl-Zeiss optics and an accompanying dual LED flash.

The physical shape of the 5800 is closer to a typical phone than the wider tablet form favoured by many touch devices (e.g. iPhone).  At 111 x 51.7 x 15.5 mm, it is about the same size as the Nokia N78 (113 x 49 x 15.1). The crucial difference is that the touchscreen takes up the majority of the front of the device and there is no numeric keypad.

The S60 5th Edition UI is designed to be used with either finger touch or with a stylus. While the UI has a familiar S60 feel, it has been optimised for touch. In portrait mode, two enlarged 'softkey labels' work as virtual keys for accessing menus (i.e. Options) and other common actions; in landscape mode, there are four virtual buttons (making up a toolbar) which do the same thing. On screen icons and menus all respond to touch interaction.

The familiar S60 applications are all available - PIM (Contacts, Calendar and Messaging), Media (Music player Gallery, Video centre, Web), services (Maps, Download!, Share online, Search) and a number of tools and utilities. Many applications have been optimised to take advantage of touch interaction and the extra screen space available. Web allows you to scroll around a page and select links using your finger, Calendar has a split screen view in landscape mode, Gallery lets you flick through media using your finger and so on.

The 5800 has a number of extra touch-related customisations. Firstly, the Media Bar, which gives quick access to the key multimedia applications. This is a drop down menu-bar that appears on the right hand side of the screen when you press the dedicated Media Bar key. Second is the Contact Bar (see image below) which lets you put your favourite contacts on your homescreen and displays information about them. Nokia call this a 'human interface that truly puts people first'.

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic's Contact Home Screen

Key features of the phone:

Software:

    * Runs S60 5th Edition on Symbian OS 9.5. It supports both finger and stylus touch. The 5800 has a stylus built in that is stored in a holder on the back left hand side of the device (although you can use any other instrument too).

    * Contact bar, a customised home screen which offers a people centric user interface. It lets you have four contacts/people on the home screen. When a person is selected, an activity log of communication and recent feed entries is shown, along with action shortcuts for calling and messaging. Contact bar is one of three choices for the home screen (idle screen), the others are the standard basic home screen and the shortcut home screen which offers application and function shortcuts (previously known as the active idle screen).

    * Media bar (drop down menu), which is accessible, at any time, via a dedicated key on the top right of the device. It offers shortcuts to the media functionality of the phone (music, pictures, share, video and web).

    * There are three text input methods available. First, via a virtual on screen QWERTY keyboard which is available in both landscape mode (suitable for finger touch) and portrait mode (better suited to the stylus). Secondly, via a virtual on screen numeric keypad, including T9, in portrait mode (suited to both finger touch and stylus). Thirdly, via hand-writing recognition (stylus by necessity). You can also use Bluetooth (HID profile) keyboards with the 5800.

    * The phone will ship with the new Nokia Music PC client, which can be used to synchronize music to and from the device. It can also be used to buy and download music from the Nokia Music Store. Alternatively, you can use Windows Media Player 11 or any other software which supports MTP (Media Transfer Protocol).

    * The 5800 ships with two games, a version of Bounce (a 3D platform/puzzle game) and a version of Global Racer. In Global Racer, you steer your car by tilting the phone from side to side, using the built-in accelerometer.

Hardware:

    * Physical dimensions: 111 x 51.7 x 15.5 mm; weight: 109g.

    * 3.2 inch, 360 x 640 resolution, touch screen (resistive). You can use the touch screen using your finger, stylus or plectrum. A stylus is built into the device and the phone will ship with one spare stylus and a plectrum (musical gadget used to puck strings) which is attached to the included lanyard.

    * Haptic feedback when you touch the screen. This is provided via general vibra feedback (i.e. it is not specific to the area of the screen you touch).

    * Proximity sensor (to prevent accidental screen touches) and an accelerometer sensor which is used to automatically rotate the screen, orientate photos and can be addressed via third party developers via Sensor APIs in the SDK.

    * 3.2 megapixel camera with Carl-Zeiss optics and a dual LED flash. Photos and videos can be uploaded to Share on Ovi, Flickr and Facebook using the embedded Share online application. The camera can also be used to record videos at up to VGA resolution (640x480) at 30 frames per second.

    * Integrated A-GPS, which is used by the Nokia Maps application to provide turn-by-turn, voice guided car navigation as well as pedestrian navigation. The GPS is also used to automatically (and optionally) geotag photos.

    * microSD card slot, with support for SDHC cards up to 16GB in size (and likely 32GB cards when they come out). An 8GB card will be included in the sales box. 81MB of internal memory.

    * WiFi, 3.5G (HSDPA) and Bluetooth connectivity (various profiles including HID, SAP, A2DP and AVRCP).

    * 1320 mAh battery, with a quoted talk time of 9 hours (WCDMA) and music playback time of 35 hours.

    * The sales box contains a Nokia 5800 with stylus pen, an extra stylus, Nokia Connectivity Cable, stylus plectrum in wrist strap (CP-306), Nokia Music Headset (AD-54, HS-45), Nokia 8GB microSD card (MU-43), Nokia Carrying Case (CP-305), Nokia Portable Stand (DT-29), and Nokia Video-out Cable (CA-75U).

    * There are three different model variants (5800-1 -2 and -3) with different 3G bands for different markets. The 5800 will be available in three colour variants: silver-black, red and blue.

The inevitable comparison

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic will inevitably be compared with Apple's iPhone and T-Mobile's G1 Android phone. While a direct comparison does have it uses, it is also worth noting that the three phones all occupy different segments.

The 5800 is not a flagship device for Nokia; it does not have the Nseries branding, and this is reflected in its price point. Clearly the 5800 will receive attention as Nokia's first S60 touch-enabled phone, but the touch features are best seen as an enabler rather than a central function. Nokia has long regarded touch as something that is a feature that is built into the platform - as such the 5800 is not Nokia's 'touch phone'; indeed, from now onwards, we can expect to see numerous S60 devices, from multiple licensees, taking advantage of the new touch capabilities of S60.

S60 5th Edition - touch and sensor enablers, enriched Internet and multimedia

Today sees the formal unveiling on S60 5th Edition. The new version of S60, built on Symbian OS 9.5, adds touch enablers to the platform, which means it is possible for licensees to create devices that use finger touch and/or stylus interaction. Other additions and improvements include the new sensor framework (adds easy integration of sensors, such as accelerometers into the platform) updated web technologies (WebKit version updated, Flash Lite 3 as standard) and enhanced multimedia functionality (support for widescreen displays, image and video editors as standard). Read on for more details.

"Today sees the introduction of S60 5th Edition, the latest release of the world’s leading, open smartphone platform, S60 on Symbian OS. The S60 5th Edition has the most advanced set of features that enable new innovations and new experiences for consumers that want to fully embrace the use of smartphone products.

With S60 5th Edition, the user interface is extended by the introduction of touch and with full support for tactile feedback. Enhanced display resolution support and a new Widescreen mode further compliments the touch UI and enables engaging visual experiences. Also, for the first time, the platform includes a framework for the use of advanced sensor technology. This all allows S60 device manufacturers to create innovative new device concepts for a wider range of user segments, while preserving the rich capabilities of the existing software platform."

The first device to use S60 5th Edition is the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic which was announced today, see other news items.

Developers can download the S60 5th Edition SDK and tools from Forum Nokia from today.

Shown here is an example of the UI in landscape 'widescreen' mode.
Note the finger touch friendly toolbar on the right hand side.

Shown here is an example of the UI in portrait mode. Note the toolbars above the soft key
areas and the hand writing recognition input area. Text input is via hand writing recognition,
on screen QWERTY virtual keyboard or on screen virtual alphanumeric keypad.

Key highlights of S60 5th Edition

    * Based on Symbian OS 9.5, which brings a host of OS level improvements, which should increase performance and battery life. The OS is also the enabler for many of the technologies described below.

    * Adds touch enablers and tactile feedback to S60. The UI is designed to be used with finger touch or a stylus. The UI and base applications have been optimised for touch usage. Tactile feedback gives a physical signal to the user (buzz/vibrate) when an on screen interaction takes place.

    * Standard S60 applications have been extended and optimised to take advantage of touch interactions.

    * In order to help enable touchscreen devices there is enhanced support for higher resolution displays and a new 'widescreen' mode.

    * Adds a framework to enable the use of sensors in the UI and by third parties. Such sensors might include accelerometers, which enable functionality such as 'flip to silence' or 'shake to unlock'. Third party access is enable by APIs which are available in the software development kit.

    * Enhanced support for Internet technologies, including an updated Web browser (more recent version of WebKit) and Flash Lite 3. The browser has been optimised for touch usage, including the ability to scroll around the screen using a finger and finger touch-friendly toolbars and controls.

    * Adds S60 Platform Services to the S60 Web Runtime (also known as WRT 2). This enables the creation of personalised and context-aware widgets. This gives widget developers access to many features of the S60 platform, including GPS, contacts, calendar, messaging, audio and video. These are accessed via custom javascript and actionscript API calls.

    * Adds new image and video editors (i.e. now standard part of platform), making it simpler to edit media on the device. The image editor functions include red-eye reduction, cropping, image adjustments and the ability to add text and images. The video editor lets you cut, merge and add sound to videos stored on the device.

    * Adds Open C++ (following on from Open C) to the platform. This brings the Standard Template Library (STL) and other popular platform-independent C++ libraries to S60.

Quotes from the press release

"S60 5th Edition’s new features and added functionality significantly enhances the products that intend to provide rich multimedia and Internet experiences for consumers. Intuitive sensor technologies, interactions via touch, and tactile feedback creates delight and excitement for consumers and unparalleled innovation opportunities for developers and internet content providers," said Lee Williams, Senior Vice President, S60 Software, Nokia. "With this release we will see manufacturers create and extend their portfolio of products with new types of devices addressing a broader range of consumer needs."

"The versatile developer support offered by S60 5th edition enables developers to write applications in a range of languages that they are already very familiar with," said Tom Libretto, Vice President, Forum Nokia. "That familiarity and being able to arm developers with the tools and technologies that best suit their needs will allow for further innovation of new applications and services, not only for S60 5th edition, but also for S60 3rd Edition Feature Packs 1 and 2."

Predstavljena Nokia 5800 XpressMusic
Petak, 3. oktobar 2008. 10:22
