The End of Symbian Draws Near – Nokia N8 successor to be last Symbian device



With Nokia’s new commitments to the Windows Phone platform, the end of Symbian was foreseen as a forgone conclusion.  It was generally thought that it would be a slow decline as less and less devices were made to support the venerable OS.

Well it looks like it’s demise is closer than previously thought.  Reports from Nokia are that the successor to the N8 may be the last and final device to utilize the OS.  Although Symbian phones remain quite popular,  targets were still not met and Nokia has decided to finish up with Belle as soon as they can.  This will no doubt be hard for the millions of Symbian fans around the world, especially since it was thought that Nokia had great things planned in the future.  This doesn’t mean the software won’t be supported, but that on the hardware side, the future certainly looks bleak.

We do know that Nokia has no Plan B as far as they are concerned regarding their future in the smartphone industry, having ditched the Symbian train and jumping aboard Microsoft’s Windows Phone bandwagon, and so far, their efforts have proved to be rather impressive, what with the Nokia Lumia 800 being more than a decent smartphone that is beautifully designed, while the Lumia 710 ain’t that shabby either. Having said that, I guess Nokia cannot but help cater to the entry-level market considering that that is their bread and butter for a long time already, which is why sources close to the Finnish phone manufacturer have shared that Nokia will introduce a new and more affordable smartphone that runs on Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system sometime next week – at Mobile World Congress, of course, as it is a very apt stage to do so. This move is to target a wider market for its new smartphones. Of course, there is also the Nokia Lumia 610 to consider as Nokia goes through what some have deemed to be a mini rennaisance.
