Nokia 701 comes to ours, shows off its Belle tricks on video


It’s Symbian day at our office today as we say hello to another of Nokia’s recently announced smartphones. The Nokia 701 will be one of the flagships of the new Belle edition of Symbian so its role in the company’s future plans is certainly big.



Bringing the new notification area, the customizable widgets and the flat menu, the Belle update certainly brings Symbian a step closer to the competition. In fact, the Nokia 701 felt quite intuitive to use, unlike the early Symbian^3 devices, which were still unable to shake off their non-touch heritage.

The device itself looks pretty sleek, sharing many of the Nokia C7 design traits. Check it out in action in the video below.

Meltemi project by Nokia could revive ailing phone company



Nokia might be on the ropes at the moment – but that does not mean the Finnish phone giant is about to throw in the towel. No sir, it seems that Nokia’s working on an internal project known as “Meltemi”, where this new software is said to power its range of upcoming low-end and entry-level handsets.

Mary McDowell, Nokia’s executive vice president in charge of phones, is said to spearhead this project, although Nokia decidedly remained mum on the new project or its future plans. Stephen Elop did mention their strategy for the low-end market that Nokia refers to as “the next billion” in a recent meeting that, “In mobile phones – it’s very much about “Sonic”, it’s very much about full touch activity that’s going on, it’s about the work we have to do around Series 40 to ensure it continues to help us in the future. It’s the “Clipper” program and the underlying “Meltemi” software effort.”

Alleged Nokia Searay for T-Mobile Germany image leaks


A very legit looking image of the Nokia Searay has just been leaked by The Nokia Blog. The image is allegedly from T-Mobile Germany and has a short description of the phone on the side.



If we translate the text to English, we get the following result:

Drive safely to your destination with Nokia - including 3D. Representation and voice navigation Windows Mobile 7.5 (Mango) operating system. 3.7" brilliant domed AMOLED display.

The phone itself looks identical to the N9, as it did in all the previous leaks, which means it is also very easy to fake it. Just like The Nokia Blog, we're finding it a bit hard to swallow that Nokia would call the final version of the phone by the name 'Searay'. More so because recently Nokia had a poll to decide the name for their series of Windows Phone 7 devices, with options like Phoenix, Genesis, etc. This means the actual phones will probably be called something like the Nokia Genesis N1 instead of simply Searay.

Things are yet to get finalized though, so eventually they might just go with individual names instead of having a name for the series. Whatever it is, we'll find out before the end of this year.

WP Mango Nokia Sea Ray leaks again, to be called Nokia Sun



At this point, we all know that there will be Windows Phone 7.5-running Nokia smartphones announced at the end of this month and now we even got to know the name and release time frame for one of them. The news came from a leaked Orange France roadmap, which mentions the Nokia Sun.

Nokia Sun will come with a 3.7" AMOLED screen, Windows Phone Mango, a 1.4GHz CPU and 16GB of onboard storage. That's suspiciously close to the specs sheet of the rumored Nokia Sea Ray and since Nokia will hardly release two so similarly-spec'd devices at the same time, safe money is on those two being the same thing.

An interesting bit revealed by this new leak is that the Nokia Sun will come with a micro SIM card, instead of a regularly-sized one. Those are still pretty rare, but Nokia already has one smartphone with micro SIM, the MeeGo-running N9, so it wouldn't be a huge shock.

What's most exciting though is that we won't even have to wait until the holiday season to get to try an actual Nokia WP smartphone. The roadmap mentions week 46 as the release time frame for the Nokia Sun, which is the second week of November. And that's only assuming that Orange will be among the first carriers to get it - otherwise we might see it hit the shelves even sooner.

Nokia officially announces the 603, it’s a 200 Euro NFC enabled 3.5 inch Symbian Belle smartphone



Less than 100 hours we brought you images and specifications of an unannounced Nokia device called the 603. Today it’s been officially announced and we’re sad to say that the predictions we made about the 603 are far from accurate. We thought it would be an ultra low end Symbian Belle device, but it isn’t. The 603 has the same 1 GHz processor as the 600, 700, and 701. It has the same NFC capabilities. It has the same quadband GSM and pentaband 3G support. It even has WiFi b/g/n and GPS. What makes the 603 different from the 600 is the screen size. The 603 rocks a 3.5 inch screen while the 600 has to make due with just 3.2 inches. Both devices have the same 640 x 360 pixel resolution that all touch enable Symbian devices have had since the 5800 shipped more than 3 years ago in April 2008. How much is the 603? 200 Euros, just 20 Euros more than the Nokia 600. Does creating an entirely new device, differentiated by nothing more than a minor increase in screen size, make any sense?



One thing we were right about is that the 603 will be the first Nokia device running Symbian to make use of microSIM cards. According to the detailed specification sheet on Nokia’s developer website, the 603 also comes with 2 microphones that enable uplink noise cancellation. That’s a fancy way of saying you’ll sound better to the person on the other line. One thing the Nokkia 600 has that got chopped off in the 603 is support for FM transmission, the feature that lets you broadcast a shortwave FM radio signal from your mobile phone so that you can hear whatever is playing on your Nokia on your car stereo. That’s not too bad. The 600 also comes with a standard Nokia charging port in addition to a microUSB port, whereas the 603 does microUSB only. We’re just nitpicking at the point; as we said earlier, the only thing people will notice in stores is 3.2 inches versus 3.5 inches.

New pictures of Nokia 800 leaked right before Nokia World

 

Nokia World is happening tomorrow, and it’s already been confirmed that we’ll be seeing the launch of Nokia’s first few Windows Phone devices. Well, for those of you who can’t wait for the official unveiling and want to see more of the phone today, good news. The folks over at The Next Web managed to get their hands on some photographs showing off the Nokia 800.

Judging by the photographs, it looks a lot like the Nokia N9 except for the addition of the Windows Phone buttons on the bottom of the device (eating up valuable real estate). It also features a physical camera button, and a relocated camera flash. The phone shown here is pink, but we also know that it will be available in black and cyan. Fans of the Nokia N9′s design who aren’t too keen on running MeeGo will definitely be interested in this Mango phone.
