Connecting Nokia 6600 to internet using Bluetooth...

What you will need:
1. AnalogX Proxy server from http://www.analogx.com/files/proxyi.exe
2. A USB Bluetooth dongle (I am using a CSR Bluetooth radio)
3. gnubox for Nokia 6600 from http://www.cs.helsinki.fi/u/mraento/symbian/gnubox6600.SIS
4. Windows XP service pack 2 (Not sure if it will work on sp1)



PC:
Disable the windows firewall, or any other firewalls present. This is one of the main reasons for the thing not working as expected. Next, Remove the WIDCOMM Bluetooth stack and any drivers from the PC. When I tried with WIDCOMM, I was unable to connect to the PC from the phone every time. So I strongly suggest that you remove the WIDCOMM drivers and use the XP Sp2 Bluetooth stack instead. To verify that you have the XP sp2 stack in use, go to Control Panel, open System, Hardware tab, and click on Device Manager. You should see “Generic Bluetooth radio” and a “Microsoft Bluetooth enumerator” under the Bluetooth section. (See screenshot)



Once you have the XP Bluetooth stack set up for use, you should pair up your phone with your USB Bluetooth dongle. You can do this from your PC, or from your phone. Right click on the Bluetooth icon in the system tray and select “Open Bluetooth settings”.(See screenshot)



If the Bluetooth icon is not visible on your tray, Go to control panel, select Bluetooth Devices. In the dialog that pops up, select the Devices tab. If you don't already see your phone there, Click “Add device” and a wizard will guide you through the process of setting up your device for use with the PC. You will have to choose a PIN number, enter it both on the PC and on the phone. Alternatively, you can initiate the pairing from the phone.

Pairing from Phone:
Switch on the Bluetooth on your mobile, and set it in the “Discoverable” mode. (Menu key->Connectivity->Bluetooth on the phone). If you have not yet paired up your phone with the Bluetooth dongle, do it now. Switch to “paired devices” tab on the Bluetooth applet in the phone, select Options->new paired device. Enter the PIN on the phone and the same on the PC when prompted. After pairing, Set the newly paired device(USB bt dongle found) as authorized.


PC:
Once the pairing is finished, your “Bluetooth devices” page in the Bluetooth settings applet will have your phone listed. (see screnshot)



Then go to the Options tab, check all boxes on the page (see screenshot)



Now move to the “COM ports” tab, you should have several ports listed there. If you have not yet set up an incoming serial port, do so now. Click on “Add” and select “Incoming” and click OK. NOTE: you should have only one incoming port added. If you see multiple incoming ports without a device name in the list, it is advisable to remove all ports and add a port again. In the end, It will look something like this: (see screenshot)



Note down this incoming port number(Here for mine it is COM9). Goto Control Panel->Phone & Modem options->Modems tab. Click “add”, select “Do not detect my modem, I will choose from a list”. Click next, Select “standard modem types” on the left, and “Communication cable between two computers”. Click next, then select the incoming COM port that we added in the Bluetooth com ports section(COM9 in this example). Click OK. Now the modems tab should look like this. (see screenshot).



You can take properties and change the speed to 115200 if you want to, but it is recommended to leave alone the default settings as such.

Now we will create a connection for the phone in the “Network Connections” folder of the PC. Go to Control Panel->Network Connections, Choose “Create new connection”, click next. Choose “advanced connection”, click next. Choose “accept incoming connections”, click next. Now in the devices section, choose the “Communications cable b/w two computers” device from the list, click Next. Select “Do not allow VPN connections”, click next. Select the users who will connect to the PC. Click next. Select TCP/IP and click properties, and set it up exactly as shown in the screenshot below:



Now click Ok on the TCP/IP properties box, click next and finish. You will have a new Connection created with the name “Incoming connections” in your Network Connections folder. Right click this connection, and select the users tab. Check the “Always allow directly connected devices such as palmtop computers to connect without a password.”. Click OK.

Next, we will install a proxy server. Download the free analogx proxy from the analogx website and install it. Run the proxy, it might show you a warning that it is in open mode, but ignore it. Rigtht click on the “P” proxy tray icon and select Config. Enable required services including HTTP, and click OK. (see screenshot)



We have successfully configured the PC part. Now its time to set up the Phone. Send the gnubox6600.sis file to the phone using Bluetooth(select the file in windows explorer and select File->send to Bluetooth. Choose your phone and click next, finish.).

Phone:
Open the received sis file and install it. Now create an access point named “Bt” on your phone(With the same exact case). To do this, go to Menu->Tools->Settings->Connection->access points->create new access point->Use default settings. Put the settings for the new Access point as follows:

Connection Name: Bt
Data Bearer: High speed GSM
Dial-up Number: any number (I use 222)
Username: leave empty
Prompt password: No
Password : leave empty/don't change
Authentication: Normal
Home page: None
Data Call type: Analogue
Max Data speed: Automatic

Now Select Options->Advanced settings and enter the following:

Phone IP address: Automatic
Primary name server: 0.0.0.0
Secondary name server: 0.0.0.0
Proxy serv. Address: None
Proxy port: 0
Use callback: No
Callback type: leave alone
Callback number: leave alone
Use PPP compression: yes
Use login script: yes
Login Script: enter the following exactly as follows, including line breaks. (copy paste to a text file and send to your phone, from where u can copy paste it to the settings box.)


Modem initialization: None

Now. Select back until you reach the standby screen.

PC:
Now start your ISP internet connection, dial-up/broadband/lan, whatever. Make sure that the proxy is running. Now we will make the phone connect ot the PC.

Phone:
If you have successfully installed GNUBOX, start it from Menu->GnuBox. Select Options->2Box direct->Infrared. Your screen should go red with some readings… Now Select Options->2Box Direct->Bluetooth. You will be prompted to select your Bluetooth device. After search, select the Bluetooth dongle attached to your PC.. your screen should now go blue, with some readings like this:


Exit gnubox, take any application on the phone that connects to the internet, except the default wap browser/mail/sync application. I am using opera that came with my phone. Start opera, enter the following settings to it:

Proxy serv address: 10.0.0.1
Proxy port: 6588
Enable proxy: yes

That's all. Now open a web url from opera (like http://www.google.com). When prompted for access point, select “Bt” – The one we created earlier. Opera should now connect. If the connection is successful, a tray icon on your PC will indicate that a successful incoming connection is made. You can also verify this on the Network Connections folder in the PC, where it will say “Unauthentiacted user connected.”, or “1 client connected” near the incoming connections icon.

NOTE: to reset your settings back to original, choose Options->1Box phone from gnubox. Otherwise your existing GPRS/SMS may be broken. It is necessary to select "1Box phone" when you are done, to restore your original network settings.

I heard that this technique does not work on the newer phones such as 7610/6670/6630. I dont know whether that is true. But I am now trying to make a proxy server that will connect the phone to a PC thru bluetooth. It does not require a long process such as this, or use gnubox, proxy etc, so will be much easier to set up.

N91 Tips & Tricks
If you are in a call and want to close the slide of the N91:
Press and Hold the Left Soft Key then close the slide. The call should continue.

Tips that will help to improve battery life in long run.
When you get the phone be sure to charge/re-charge the battery at least 3 times, ie use the phone untill the batter goes dead, and keep repeating it.

In order not to take the risk of losing all your files:
Please make sure that you backup all your contacts and what ever else you intend to copy over to the Nokia N91. This is because from time to time, you might need to reformat the harddrive or do a major reset.


Tips for using RealPlayer.
1. To fast forward and Rewind, press and hold the joystick UP or DOWN then release when you get to the point you want.
2. To pause and resume, press the joystick.
3. To switch between full screen and normal screen, use the "2" key on the numeric keypad.

Tips on how to speed up song scrolling.
While you are scrolling (all songs or any other views) in music player, release joystick and press it again to the same direction. The speed will be much faster afterwards.

Tips on speeding up access to Media Gallery.
If you try to access the files (let say pictures that you've taken) via Menu> Media> Gallery> Images then select to open, you are likely to wait for about 30-40 secs.
Hence, to speed up the process, use the File Manager that comes with the phone. You can do this by Menu> Tools> File Manager> Select either the Phones Memory or the Harddrive (depending on where u put your pics).
Or, you could set it as either a softkey or on the active desktop.

Play with the Music Button.
Click once: take you to the Music player, where you could play mp3 songs. Now if you click the button again, the N91 will leave the song playing in the background and go back to the prevous screen.

If you hold the button down for about 5 secs it will take you straight to the radio function (regardless of which screen you are in).

How do I transfer music from the PC to my phone?
There are three different methods:
1. Treat your phone as external hard drive: Connect your phone to the PC with USB cable or Bluetooth. Then, transfer the files.
2. Synchronize music with Windows Media Player: attach the USB cable and select Media player as the connection method.
3. Use Nokia Audio Manager (available in PC Suite): Attach USB cable, then select PC Suite as the connection method.

Can I transfer my Apple iPod music files to my Nokia N91 using iTunes or via DragDrop?
This depends on the music files you want to transfer. You can transfer unprotected files only, (files that imported from your own music CD). Transferring protected music files, (files you have bought from iTunes music store), is not possible.
1. Drag&Drop can be used in both Microsoft Windows and Apple Mac.
2. iTunes can be used only in Apple Mac with Nokia Music Manager

I have sent some mp3 songs to the N91 from the PC. I got the message - saved to Music Libary. But later, i cannot find it there.
This is very common problem. Instead of looking under Music Library, you should try to find it under File Manager> Attachments

Is it possible to use downloaded ringing tones or music tracks as message tones?
Yes.
1. Connect your N91 to your PC using its USB connector and select 'Music transfer'.
2. Open your N91's files on 'My Computer' and select 'attachments', and drag and drop your desired tone here.
3. Disconnect your phone, and go to Menu> tools> file manager> attachments, your file should be in here.
4. Select file options> move to> sound clips> tones
5. Go to settings> profile manager> personalise.
6. Finally, go to the message tone option, and select your new tone.

The built-in browser is rather slow.
You could have a go at OperaMini (specifically designed for N91). Its a lot faster.

I can't use any themes downloaded over the internet.
This is a bug (feature). Please make sure you have the current firmware installed. If not, you could update it at Nokia Service Centre.

Why cannot other devices find my phone, even though Bluetooth is on?
Check that My phone's visibility is set to Shown to all. This can be done by selecting Menu> Connect> My phone's visibility> Shown to all.

I was asked to provide MAC address when i try to access a WIFI network or Bluetooth compatiable printer.
1. To check the unique Media Access Control (MAC) address that identifies your device, enter *#62209526# in the standby mode. (for WIFI settings)
2. To find the unique address of your device, enter the code *#2820# in the standby mode.

Can I hear my N91 with the music on the speakers of my car?
No. This is because N91 does not support Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP). A2DP, also refer to as AV profile, is designed to transfer a stereo audio stream like music from an MP3 player to a headset or car radio.

Why does my battery drain fast?
You could:
1. Try turning the Bluetooth technology off when you do not need it.
2. Click Connection settings>Packet data conn, change it to >When needed.
3. Close all the applications (which you do not need) that are running in the background. Do this by press and hold the Menu key, then select the application from the list. Lastly, exit the application.

Why is the blue status light of my phone always flashes?
It is an indication that the screen power has been turned off (to save battery life) but the phone is still on and active.

Can i turn the blue light off?
You could turn the sleep mode off. Settings>Phone>Display. However, this might reduce the battery life.

There is no autokey lock, what can i do?
You could install either one of the two freewares.
1. Autolock: It locks the keypad after a specified time period.
2. Mlock: Once installed, it will appear on your standby screen. It will lock your keypad with a simple click.

Mp3 songs that i added to the memory card wouldn't show up (as a playlist) in the music player.
After adding audio tracks to the memory card, go to Music player>Options>Music library>Options (again)> then choose Update. The phone does take a while to find all the audio files tho.

I am irritated by Not enough memory error message. (While zooming pictures in gallery from 50% above, or in the Web browser exiting to the iddle screen.)
Please check if you've got the latest firmwareinstalled in your phone (enter *#0000# on the phone while it is in standby). If not, you could either bring your phone to nokia service centre or do it at home (not recommended).

When transferring larger amounts of data to memory card, the crashes half way through.
Quick fix, is to press the power butten and choose the "remove memory card". Then, insert back the card again. The phone should resume to normal.

I have been getting pretty poor battery life.
You've to turn off your phone's need to search for a 3g network. To do this, click on Menu>Tools> Settings>Network>then select GSM.

I cannot delte emails out of my inbox. I click delete and it only puts a line through it.
Emails will be deleted once you re-sync with your email account.

Can i create themes for my phone?
Yes, you will have to use Theme Studio 3.0 (available for free download here)

How to change the resolution of the theme studio to 320x240 (w/h)?
1. Open a normal (240x320) theme with theme studio.
2. Drag an image (with the size of 320x240) from the browser tab on the right side to the active background rectangle.
3. In the toolbox, click layer effects>layers. This should bring up a box showing your actual layers.
4. Click the tiny arrow right of the mini-preview in that box. A list of layer effects
should appears beneath the mini-preview.
5. Click Apply Graphics>Scaling mode.
6. Select - With aspect ratio
7. Click the save button at the bottom of the active background preview.


I get the message: no gateway reply while trying to connect wireless network (wi-Fi).
You could try to change the Wi-Fi setup of your phone from open key to share key.

General information about S60 3rd Edition devices

I have problems installing a .sis file on my Nokia device.
The new Symbian OS 9.1 package is known as SISX, which differs from the SIS format. Hence, old SIS packages are not supported. User tools, recognisers, file extension and mainstream documentation, however, will continue to refer to SIS packages.

Can I use old Nokia S60 applications with my Nokia device?
No. Your device only supports Series 60, 3rd edition applications.

What can I do if my phone memory is low?
To free phone memory, transfer data to a memory card in the Office > File mgr view. Mark files to be moved, select Move to folder > Memory card and then a folder.

My phone is requesting a PIN/PIN2/PUK/PUK2 code.
PIN: set by yourself by following the instructions in your user guide.
PIN2: acts as a second layer of protection for certain features of your phone.
PUK: an 8-digit code request only when PIN code is entered incorrectly multiple times.
PUK2: Request when PIN2 code is entered incorrectly multiple times.

Both PUK & PUK2 are provided by your operator or service provider.
I got this error message: Installation security error. Unable to install.

Only carry out the following procedures if you can trust the application that you are installing.
Go to Application Manager>select the application that you are trying to install, click on Options>Settings. You will see two options:
1) Software Installation (set this to "All")
2) Online Certificate. (set this to "Off")
Remember to turn these settings back on after installation.

Can I use my Nokia device without a SIM card?
Yes. The Offline profile is automatically activated when the device is switched on without a SIM card. This allows you to use your SIM card in another phone.

How do I switch WLAN off, so as to reduce the battery consumption?
You cannot switch it off, you can only specify that your phone does not scan for available networks.
To turn off the background scan:
1. Press the Menu key, and select Tools>Settings>Connection>Wireless LAN.
2. Select Scan for networks>Never.
3. To save your changes, select Back.
You can still use available WLAN networks as usual.

How to Change the midi-patchset

use a midi patchset by Beatnik which is built into the ROM.
If you are slightly musical you will be able to tell that this is a highly compressed and reduced patchset.

[Patchset: A file containing samples of the 128 midi instruments and drums needed to play a .mid/midi file. Larger patchsets (for a PC) generally have multiple samples per instrument as a piano sounds different in one octave to another. Small patchsets (e.g. smartphone) can double up (e.g. a "steel guitar" might use the same as a "nylon guitar" to save space.]

This patchset is stored in read-only ROM memory at Z:\System\Data\Beatnik\ with the name "patches.hsb".

[.hsb files are Headspace Sound Banks.]

Although ROM cannot be deleted or replaced, the Symbian devices have a wonderful feature where if you put a file in a directory on C: with the same filename and directory path it will load that file instead of the one in ROM.

Therefore, you can upgrade your Symbian device to have a larger (and better sounding) patchset for playing MIDI files by copying a compatible HSB file to C:\System\Data\Beatnik. (You have to create the Beatnik sub-directory first as it doesn't exist on C: by default).

The only place I've found to get HSB patchsets free so far is from Sun Microsystems as they also use the exact same format for their Java patchsets.

The default patchset in your Symbian phone is about 100-170k (depending if UIQ or S60 etc).

Notes:
- I've found you don't need to restart the device for changes to take effect after you've restarted the first time. e.g. to go back to normal, just rename patches.hsb in your C: drive to patches-tmp.hsb etc and you'll have the built-in patchset back.
- There is a considerable delay in opening midi files as it loads the new patchset into ram each time.
- This could impinge on copyrights of the patchsets but I don't see how... just don't hold me responsible
