Share, copy, backup without PC
This can be easily done with Sharkoon''s USB link Bridge device, which gives you the possibility of sharing files from one device to another using on-the–go technology - which is host technology for control. In this way you will be able to easily transfer photos from your digital camera to the USB flash stick for example, without having to use a computer.

The package includes

The USB Link Bridge device itself, 3 batteries “Maxell” type AAA, 1,5V and short manual in German and English language. As you will notice – that the presence of batteries means that it’s not necessity the use of an adapter which is not included in the package and even – it is not thought as an option of it’s usage anyway.

A closer look

You'll immediately notice that the device is very compact in size ( 58x74x17 mm WxHxD) and with elegant design. It's weight is only 49g without the batteries.
On the front panel there are 3 LEDs for status indication, along with power and reset buttons – to execute an emergency abort or in case that there is a need to reinitialize the factory settings.
Behind the LED indicator of the Power button there is a key which plays the role of a switch between the two modes of copying - Root and Disk.
On the both sides of the device there is an USB connector (2.0/1.x compatible). The left one is for the data Source, and the right one is for the target device.

When you connect some kind of USB products to Sharkoon USB link Bridge – the indicators on both sides of the Power button start to flicker with blue light – untill the device is found and then they start glowing again with blue light. Once the transfer of data has started – they once more flicker synchronous (in the manual there is a table which shows the different modes of the light indicators) when the "copy" command is given – on the destination device a folder with the name DIR0000 is being created. The copied files are being placed in this folder. When you try to copy again the device does not overwrite the directory and the files, instead it makes new folder with the name DIR 0001 and so on.

Note: If the files on the device placed in the USB port are organized in folders (digital camera or mp3 player) they won't be transferred to the other device, if USB Link Bridge is ROOT mode. That's why I recommend to those who are planning to buy this device to switch It immediately to DISK mode, so that there won't be any unpleasant surprises.

The batteries

I've also tested the batteries life as I repeatedly copied the same files from one device to another (around 30 times, I don't know the exact count, because I got bored counting them). The device performance was good and the batteries didn't go dead ;-)
It's a good idea to buy rechargeable batteries if you intend on using the USB Link Bridge more often, even though alkaline batteries can be used for a long periods of time.

The conclusion
Well this is one very good and up to date device for sharing/copying/backuping data without PC. USB Link Bridge is compact, lightweight, easy to use and finds good use in our modern and dynamic life. Sharkoon USB Bridge is sold for about 30 euro (VAT not included).

Cons
- After the transfer of data, the device suddenly turns off
- There is no light indication for successful transfer of data before the device to automatically turned off
- The blue LEDs are very bright and their light can be considered as irritating by some people
- A bit high price

Pros
- There is energy saving mode, which automatically turns off of the device – when no command has been given for about 30 sec
- Compact, elegant and smart pocket size design
