Nokia is planning something on Thursday in London

Nokia (NYSE: NOK) (NYSE: NOK)’s word of mouth marketing team are up to their silly little tricks again, this time staging an event in London for a select group 10 mobile bloggers this Thursday. The invitation is one big arrow shaped box and comes with a Nokia N97 inside. “The Nokia Signpost opening on the 23rd of October” sounds like it has something to do with the “Ovi Prime Place” trademark we heard about earlier today. All you have to know is to come back to IntoMobile come Friday to get the details on what’s going on :-) Good Luck to Nokia’s PR team competing with Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT)’s PR team who are going to be launching the next version of Windows that very same day.

Nokia dropping Symbian from N-Series by 2012

This evening, at the official N900 meet-up in London, the Maemo marketing team revealed that Nokia plan to drop Symbian from the entire ‘top end’ N-Series range of handsets in favour of Maemo by 2012.

The future for N-Series: Maemo

The transition will be a gradual one with further Symbian-based N-Series handsets already in development.  Whilst the N900 was acknowledged to be a ‘bridge’ device firmly aimed at the developer and enthusiast community, subsequent devices will target the mass-market and Maemo-based devices will grow to fill all of Nokia’s flagship range by 2012. There are no current plans for Maemo devices in the new video-focused X-Series range or popular E-Series enterprise range, but Nokia had been surprised by the enthusiasm with which the N900 and the latest incarnation of Maemo have been received so further expansion isn’t out of the question.

‘Maemo Select’, the current community-portal for Maemo applications, will initially run alongside Nokia’s Ovi store, which is due to launch for the N900 via a software update next month.  However, in the longer term it too will be retired leaving only the Ovi Store as the official Nokia source for free and paid applications promoted on Symbian and Maemo devices.

Although there has been much speculation about the future of Symbian and Maemo and the relationship between the two - Nokia intends to retain both, producing development tools that will work across the two - this is the first official confirmation I am aware of that Symbian is to be relegated from the symbolic N-Series brand.  It’s a bold move by Nokia, but a smart one… Recently Symbian’s greatest strength, it’s legacy and maturity, has begun to look like an Achilles heal as newer platforms have captured consumers’ imaginations with faster development and better user experience.  A fresh-start was needed at the top-end and it’s come just in time…

Prodaja je trebala da počne u oktobru, ali je odložena za sredinu novembra tako da je Nokia upravo ovih dana krenula da isporučuje N900. Imaš vest o tome ovde:

Nokia N87 12MP document leaked?

A random video on YouTube shows what looks something like an official Nokia document outlining some initial features of the Nokia N87 12MP. According to the document, the N87 will feature a 12 megapixel Carl Zeiss lens with a dual-LED Xenon flash, a 3.2 inch capacitive WVGA display, 600 MHz processor and 16GB internal storage. It is nice to see Nokia getting up to speed and finally introducing an N-series phone with some desirable specs. If this pans out, let’s hope this is the one that “Comes With Maemo”.

Nokia to launch dual SIM phones?

Will Nokia launch dual SIM phones in 2010? Well according to Eldar from Mobile-Review, Nokia will release dual sim phone in Russia next year (specs still unknown). Let us just hope that the phone will be available to other countries as well. Is it just me who think it is time that manufacturers release phones with dual sim card holder?

Nokia will launch dual SIM phones in 2Q10 in mid tier segment. Nokia Russia – Viktor Saijes, just said that this is true

Rumour: Nokia changing model naming scheme, will announce 12 megapixel camera phone at MWC

Mobile World Congress is less than a week away, so you’re excused if you don’t read anything after the period ending this sentence. Like any major press event, rumours fly out of every deep corner of the web just before it’s due to take place. Many are incorrect, few are right, but that’s only because they’re so vague. Today the French version of Tom’s Guide [Note: when the hell did they change their name?] brings us quite a few Nokia (NYSE: NOK) rumours.

They say Nokia is going to give up the 4 digit model number naming scheme we’ve all grown to hate. Did you see the 5230? It’s a cheaper version of the 5800, but with the same screen size of the 5530 and a 2 megapixel camera! Very few people will understand what I’ve just said. Nokia will switch to Cseries for the low end, Xseries for entertainment, Eseries for email/business, Nseries for high end devices, and Sseries for really high end devices that ship in limited quantities. I’m hoping the Sseries rumour is true, because I personally feel there is a growing space in the market for a device that is more than $500, but less than the $2000 starting price for a Vertu. Best materials, best technology, limited production run $1000 to $1200 phones are going to be the next big thing. You just wait and see.

Anyway, there’s more. The C5 will ship in June, it has GPS, no price. The 6700 Slide will be 140 EUR, have a 5 megapixel camera and come in 6 colors. The C3 will be Nokia’s first S40 QWERTY device in a long, long time, and it’s going to ship in July. The C5 is a better version of the C3, with a full keyboard [meaning the C3 may have 2 letters per key similar to the Nokia E55] and GPS.

Saving the best for last, the N8. It’s supposed to be Nokia’s first Symbian^3 device, first device with a 12 megapixel camera sensor, first device with HDMI video out, and first device with a 3.5 inch capacitive screen. That’s a lot of firsts, and usually the more outrageous the specification sheet, the less likely the rumour is to be true. If it does turn out to be true, then you can expect delay after delay after delay, and terribly buggy software. Remember the Nokia N95? First Nokia with GPS, 5 megapixel camera, hardware accelerated graphics, and a whole lot more. It was launched in limited quantity 6 months after it was announced and the first version of the firmware gave users a horrible experience. Here is hoping the N95 taught them a valuable lesson and the N8 will not be a repeat of the past.

Qualcomm: “There will be a Nokia Symbian phone this year with Snapdragon”

Petri Sajari, Helsingin Sanomat, interviewed Qualcomm (NSDQ: QCOM) CEO Paul Jacobs and was told that by the end of this year there will be a Nokia (NYSE: NOK) device with a Snapdragon processor inside running the Symbian mobile operating system.

This is huge for a number reasons. First, Nokia and Qualcomm have been fighting each other over wireless patents for years. They finally resolved their issues in July 2008 with a settlement that involves Nokia paying an undisclosed, but predictably handsome amount of money, to Qualcomm over the course of the next 15 years.

Second, now that Symbian is open source, and assuming Nokia engineers port the modifications done to the Symbian kernel back to the publicly available branch of Symbian software, then this paves the way for other OEMs to pick up Qualcomm chipsets and run with Symbian software with little to no issues. Building with Qualcomm is easy since their platforms come with wireless radios. When a hardware manufacturer buys into the Qualcomm platform, the not only get a fast processor, they get WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, and most importantly GSM/GPRS/UMTS and HSPA.

Third, this shows that Nokia and Qualcomm have really resolved their issues, and that the press release they issued last year saying that they’re working together was not just for show, but it was actually real, and that the results of said partnership are going to come soon. It usually takes 2 years to get a smartphone out on the market, so this Symbian device sounds just about perfect.

Huge thanks to @thebluenile who sent me an article, in Finnish, that details all of this. If you can read Finnish then check out the article after the break. It’s a photo from a real live newspaper. It’ll be an artifact in a few years.

Update: We’re going to be at Qualcomm’s Mobile World Congress party later tonight so if we get any new details we’ll make sure to post them here.

Short rant about Nokia’s (non) appearance at MWC. And, btw, Nokia X10 gets leaked

Nokia’s (non) appearance at Mobile World Congress was one of my bigger disappointments at the event.

Yes, they rented their own exhibition space, and they have announced MeeGo, which might be a rather bigger deal, then some new handset announcement.

But not a single new device?! At the biggest mobile industry event of the year? C’mon dudes. It just seems so arrogant and wrong.

And what about Symbian?

The guys (at foundation and Nokia), went out of their way opensourcing everything, getting the first major foundation release out the door for MWC. And then they get relegated to a 10 square meter booth,  in the back corner of the Hall 1? Without a single device to show-off and a 5 min video to play? What kind of message does that send about the “biggest smartphone OS in the world”?

Especially compared to the presence your main competitors – Google, Microsoft and Samsung had. And attention they generated? Is there a subconscious deathwish  for Symbian in play,  or something? You said yourself that there are several Symbian^3 handsets coming by summer. Is there any better and bigger event to show them off, then MWC, that I’m not aware of?

Well, anyway, with that out of my system, let’s turn back to those Symbian handsets. We’ve already heard about Nokia N87 or N8.

The specs of the device:

    * Slider with QWERTY keyboard
    * Multiple homescreens with auto rotation
    * 600 MHz ARM Cortex A8 CPU
    * 3.2” AMOLED capacitive touchscreen
    * 32/16GB internal storage
    * 256 MB of RAM
    * HSDPA, Wi-Fi, A-GPS
    * 5 mpx camera with LED flash

And what’s with the name X10, btw? I think Sony Ericsson might be pretty upset about it.

Nokia C6 confirmed and approved by FCC

Remember the Nokia C6, rumored to be a new Cseries touchscreen phone? The handset is real, and it was recently approved by the FCC as Nokia RM-612.

According to Nokia’s declaration of conformity site, the RM-612 is the C6, so we know that the new phone features Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth, quad-band GSM connectivity, and tri-band WCDMA connectivity (900 / 1900 / 2100 MHz).

We also know that the Nokia C6’s case looks like this (so the phone seems to be a bit longer than the Nokia Mystic QWERTY candybar):

For the moment, there are no details on the release date of Nokia C6, but the handset might be unveiled soon, possibly at the same time with the Nokia C3 and Nokia C5.
