Nokia Aeon and iPod Nano 4G make love for a concept

If Nokia’s Aeon and a Nano made sweet love, this is what you’d get. Curved edges, slim profile, touchscreen technology, high-tech is written all over it!

Designed by a certain Mac Funamizu, this particular phone concept features a dynamic screen that works with different technologies including tactile feedback on a touchscreen and e-ink. And aside from a standard alphanumeric keypad, it also has a semi-standard Apple keyboard for users to type on whenever the need arises.



It’s certainly a nice concept, and I’m sure designers at both Nokia and Apple would be proud, but if you want to know what those white things in the last photo are, I don’t know. Maybe clouds?

Nokia E63 uskoro?

Na internetu je osvanuo User Agent Profile novog Nokijinog Series 60 telefona - E63. Da podsetimo - pojava User Agent Profile-a znači da je telefon u stanju testiranja i da se može očekivati da će uskoro biti zvanično najavljen, a sam fajl u sebi sadrži spisak mogućnosti telefona. Možete ga pogledati ovde, a iz njega se jedino može zaključiti da će E63 sadržati Symbian OS 9.2 (zaista mi nije jasno zašto), a biće opremljen i podrškom za WiFi, GPRS, Edge, UMTS i HSDPA. Za sada nema nikakvih preciznijih informacija.

Spy shots of the Nokia E63 emerge



As part of the whole discussion on the leaked Nokia promotional video about a month ago,  the existence of the mysterious Eseries phone, the E63, has come to light. Much of the phone still remains a mystery but we do have some new spy shots to confirm its existence and few leaked details on the handset itself courtesy of the Telefon-Tredd.de forums. This is all rumor so take it with a healthy grain of salt. The Nokia E63 is purported to come in three variants: the E63-1: for Europe, the E63-2: without a camera and more memory (?), and E63-3: for the Americas. According to a user agent profile on Nokia servers and from the spy shooter himself, the E63 will have the following specs:

    * GSM and GPRS + EDGE
    * UMTS + HSDPA
    * Display: 240 x 320 Pixel, 18bit
    * Camera: At least 2MP. No Front Camera.
    * WLAN
    * Bluetooth
    * Symbian v9.1
    * S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1
    * MIDP 2.0 and CLDC 1.1
    * Has 3.5 mm jack connector
    * Is thicker than E71
    * Has a flashlight function (which by pressing the space bar immediately activated and can be disabled)
    * No metal construction (plastic only) except Navikey and camera module
    * No side buttons
    * Left side: microSD slot and micro-USB connector (with hard plastic closure)
    * The microphone is on the lower side (not front as E71)
    * 2mm mains next to the microphone
    * Bottom right (on the corner) is an eyelet
    * Menu’s like E71, looks like FP1

The better part of Nokia's smartphone roadmap goes on display



Okay, so maybe the N96 isn't your cup of tea. Perhaps you're disappointed that Nokia didn't blow out its inaugural entry into the wide world of touch with something just a little more superphone-ish than the 5800. We here you, we really do -- but hang tight, because anyone upset or jaded over Nokia's current S60 lineup might want to take a quick glance here to see if there's light at the end of the tunnel.

First, a word of caution: we're not certain what we're looking at here, but by all accounts, it appears to be a list of prototype devices available to groups within Nokia or third-party development partners. We've filled in as much as we could, adding notes where appropriate. In many (if not most) cases, these devices are available in a series of successive prototype builds that improve on elements of the hardware before they're blessed and released to manufacturing for retail; the availability dates you see here are of the most recent prototype build that we were able to find. Notable goodies include the "Corolla" with a 3-inch VGA display, the "Jig" landscape slider for AT&T, and the "Eitri," a monster QWERTY candybar with a 640x350 display and 5-megapixel camera, but there's a ton of good stuff here, so make a bowl of popcorn, curl up with your laptop, and take a few minutes to digest this thing in its entirety.

Lots of these projects are either ultimately canceled, rolled into future projects, or were always intended for internal development use, so we won't necessarily end up seeing everything that's listed here -- that being said, it's awesome to know that Nokia's planning to knock the spec sheets out of the park in 2009.

Nokia’s half QWERTY device, Wahoo, headed for AT&T gets pictured; Sorry Charlie!



Well, what do we have here? It seems as if it’s a never before seen Nokia handset! We don’t have a name to call it other than the internal codename, “Wahoo,” but what we can do is recap some of the specs of the device for you…

    * Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE
    * Dual-band UMTS/HSDPA (850MHz/1900MHz)
    * There’s two displays, one internal and one external. They sizes are 2.2″ with a 240×320 resolution, and 1.36″ with a 128×160 resolution respectively
    * 2.0 megapixel camera with flash
    * Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP
    * Four hours of UMTS talk time
    * Sadly a 2.5mm headset jack

We don’t have a release date for you yet, but our ninja has confirmed to us (as if the UMTS radio bands didn’t give it away) that this Nokia phone will definitely be hitting AT&T. The form-factor is actually pretty similar to the BlackBerry Pearl Flip, with a half-QWERTY clamshell design. The specs aren’t incredible, but hey, we think any Nokia fans on AT&T will take what they can get… Larger shot with more specs after the break!

Nokia preparing touchscreen handset with true haptic feedback?



The road to true tactile feedback systems in touchscreen smartphones has been littered with half-baked, so-called “haptic” feedback solutions that do little more than vibrate the entire handset with every touchscreen input. Granted, the technology is still in its infancy, but there are some that would argue that implementing anything less than true tactile feedback is an insult to mobile enthusiasts and amounts to deception of the masses.

True Haptic feedback is the holy-grail of touchscreen feedback systems. The problem with touchscreen tech is that the glass or plastic display doesn’t convey the same button-press feedback that make physical keys so attractive to many. So, researchers are toiling away in R&D labs to create a feedback system that gives the user key-press feedback by means of vibrations or raised bumps. The ultimate goal is to localize and isolate the feedback sensation to the area under the finger.

Both Apple and Nokia are working on technology that would do just that. Both companies are working on different technologies to acheive true localized haptic feedback, and it’s possible that a working solution could hit market within a year or two.

In fact, a leaked product roadmap from Nokia, uncovered by Engadget Mobile, hints at the arrival of a cellphone, codenamed “Eitri,” sporting true haptic feedback technology in the first half of 2009. Handset specifications detail a device with a 3.5-inch pressure-sensitive touchscreen capable of haptic feedback and gesture support.

This is what we know:

    * Landscape candybar design with QWERTY keyboard
    * 3.5-inch 640×350 display
    * Minimum 8GB ROM
    * MicroSD
    * Pressure sensitive touch UI with tactile feedback and gestures
    * Charging via USB
    * 5MP AF camera with dual LED flash
    * Integrated compass and accelerometer
    * Proximity sensor
    * FM transmitter

The rest of the “Eitri” spec-sheet is respectable enough to carry the handset to success, but the mention of “tactile feedback” really grabs our attention. Sure, a 3.5-inch monster display boasting a 640×350 pixel count is impressive, as is the 5 megapixel camera and 8GB of ROM, but we’ve seen it all before. True-blue haptic feedback, on the other hand, still eludes us.

Could the Eitri be the first Nokia handset to bring Nokia’s Haptikos technology to market? Are we on the verge of seeing the debut of true haptic feedback? Time will tell…

What's coming from Nokia this week?



A tradeshow to call its own, Nokia World kicks off this week in Barcelona -- and while it's expected to mostly be a way for developers to get out of their windowless offices for a couple minutes and connect with like-minded folks, a countdown timer has appeared on Nokia's European and Middle Eastern / African sites that suggests something bigger is afoot. New handsets, accessories, or initiatives? We're hoping for the first choice there -- because you know, Nokia, we haven't seen any Nseries devices running S60 5.0 yet. Hint, hint.
