Nokia 2012 Concept Designs

Nokia's main design contractor, Provoke Design must own a time machine of sorts (or a really wild imagination) in order to come up with concepts that might roll out come 2012. These new concepts are currently being paraded in New York at the HARDCORE New Finish Design exhibition starting this Saturday. These fully functional prototypes are supposed to demonstrate the core innovation proposed, whatever that means. They consist of Express, Share, and Feel concept models. I wonder if any of those pack in a projector of sorts.

Nokia "definitely" preparing Linux-based phones, flavor unknown

With Nokia's dedication to Maemo and the recent Trolltech acquisition, it's no secret that Espoo has its eyes firmly locked on the Linux prize -- but outside the whole Internet Tablet phenomenon, there hasn't been a lot of product to show for it. Looks like that's all about to change, with CFO Rick Simonson commenting this week that the company will "definitely" be releasing some Linux-based cellphones in the future, marking a pretty big move for a company with strong tradition in its long-lived Series 40 dumbphone and S60 smartphone platforms. Simonson refused to get into the nitty gritty details about what flavor of mobile Linux would be used; borrowing from its tablets might make sense, but the Android and LiMo juggernauts seem like they're going to be pretty hard to ignore as well -- not to mention that Google is said to have chatted briefly about Android with Nokia in the not-too-distant past. So what does this all mean? Is S60 Touch in danger here?

New Nokia UI designs and form factors

When the news that there will be no upgrade to Nokia N93 device until 2010 came out, quite a few of it’s fans were pretty disappointed. And that’s understandable.

My guess is Nokia has it’s hands full with developing an iPhone challenger with S60 Touch and bringing the platform that made N95 possible to the masses. So the introduction of some additional, unproven, form factors is the last thing they want to do right now.

But that does not mean that all the experiments and ideas about new mobile phone interfaces and form factors has stopped at Nokia R&D labs. And from some patent filings that we got our hands on today, we can show you few more interesting handset interfaces/form factors that Nokia is trying out.

The first has to do with a swiveling phones similar to Nokia 7370
At first look, and when you open the phone in a right hand, it looks exactly like 7370:

But here’s what happens when you hold it in your left hand and open it:

Yep. A touchscreen appears instead of the normal keypad. This is done with the help of a clever hinge, which actually opens different layers, depending whether the top cover swivels to the right or left.

Here’s one more Nokia’s take on a touch interface:

A curved, touch sensitive scroll bar. It takes much less space then a circular touch pad and is very easy to operate with one hand. I can see quite a few Nokia handsets that would benefit from such set-up.

Another interesting form factor has to do with media players in mobile phones. If you are watching a 2 hour movie on your phone, holding it in your hand becomes annoying pretty fast. But if you put it on a table or on some other surface, you can’t actually see the screen.

Here’s one of the ways how Nokia decided to tackle this problem:

Not something really groundbreaking or original, but might be interesting to see in some specialized Nokia handsets.

We already told you that they’ve been testing various things with a live Nokia Aeon model, we’ve also written about new touch interfaces for Nokia handsets, and there’s that cool Nokia cameraphone from a few months ago, too.

So it looks like things are humming nicely in Nokia R&D labs, and some of the contraptions created there are very likely to become an exciting products. If only to know when and which ones.

Nokia N96 to start shipping in July 31?

If you are one of the many people awaiting the release of Nokia’s next flagship phone, pay attention. You might have only two months left to wait. Because if Play.com’s product listing turns out right, the cellphone-crushing monster of a handset called Nokia N96 should become available as early as July 31st of this year.

Pictured here is the Nokia N96, underneath which it says a SIM-free version is available for sale in Black, and it’s unlocked. This would’ve been really great news, except for the fact that early adopters will need to bleed £600 or nearly $1,200 to get a hold of this phone.

For all the bells and whistles it has, it would be understandable for the Nokia N96 to have a relatively high introductory price. But at more than $1,000, Nokia seems to be pushing the line a little bit. Not only is it more expensive than practically every other phone that stands at about the same level as it in terms of features, it’s also more expensive that a lot of consumer laptops out on the market today. So, this really begs the question, is the Nokia N96 worth it? We will soon find out.

Nokia 7519 and 7610 Supernova

A supernova is definitely a sight to behold, but I don't think Nokia did a very good job with the S40-powered 7510 and 7610. The former is an auto-opening clamshell handset while the latter comes in a slider form factor, aiming to bring together both form and function into a single device pretty much like how Nokia's previous efforts with the L’Amour was like. The Nokia 7610 is clearly the superior handset among the two once you check out their respective specifications after the jump.

Nokia's patent for potential N85 reveals unstoppable camera fetish

Nokia's always coming up with some new harebrained scheme for cramming a gargantuan camera lens into one of its new phones -- trust us, if the Finnish phone giant could accomplish this task by breaking into Fort Knox or compromising your precious bodily fluids, it would. The latest effort by Nokia comes in the form of a patent that might point the way to an upcoming video phone, possibly the N85, which could give current compact shooters a run for their money. Current thinking on that device is that it'll be a video-oriented successor to the N96, with a WQVGA screen and a 5 (or maybe even Smile megapixel camera. It's mostly conjecture at this point, but we hope Nokia accomplishes it with a thinner device than we're looking at in this patent.

Nokia 7610 SuperNova official pics

We all know “7610″ is just recycled material for Nokia, since they already have an old model smartphone with the same number designation. But if you’ve ever seen a few photos of the new 7610, you’ll find Nokia’s reusing their old product names just a bit more forgiveable.

The new model, called the Nokia 7610 SuperNova, will come in a shiny slider form factor, with much more powerful features than the old 7610. It ditches the smartphone-y S60 UI for Nokia’s swifty S40, which kind of makes it work like a phone, first and foremost, and second as a multimedia machine.

Aside from the software revamp, the Nokia 7610 SuperNova also brings a few hardware improvements over its last incarnation to the table. In place of the puny 1 megapixel camera the first Nokia 7610 had, the 7610 SuperNova will rock a 3.2 megapixel cam with autofocus and an LED flash. It will also have FM radio with RDS, a built-in music player, and support for external memory via microSD cards.

Its QVGA display supports up to 16 million colors, so that means you’ll probably have a ball watching the 30 fps and VGA resolution videos that you’ve recorded with it. Battery life is typical for a Nokia, which means you’ll be able to use it for a whole day without experiencing any problems.

The only letdown is a minor one: it doesn’t have 3G. It will only work with EDGE, but fortunately it has a quad-band antenna. A presentation of this phone is expected to be made in Singapore on June 17th, presumably along the other phones in the new SuperNova range.
