Nokia's Android flirtations revealed



We don't know if this device is "super confidential" or not, but we've just come across yet another Nokia N9 lookalike with a non-MeeGo operating system on board. Well, it looks that way, anyhow. There's no way to verify that the Android homescreen we see above is a legitimate Gingerbread installation and not a mere screenshot (the resolution looks all wrong, for one thing), but the source of this image is the same Chinese fellow that posted a picture of Nokia's Windows Phone prototype, the Sea Ray, way back in May, so we're inclined to believe he's got an inside line on these things. Additionally, the undersized Android UI elements on the screen actually encourage us to believe that this is indeed a Nokia testing device -- if we were going to fake something like this, we'd use a regular screen grab for our tomfoolery -- and Stephen Elop has openly admitted that Nokia spent a couple of wild seconds contemplating a switch to Android. Well, folks, here's what that alternate future might have looked like.

Nokia N5 leaks out with Symbian Anna




The Nokia N5 is the latest of Symbian Anna, but it just couldn't wait for its official announcement and broke cover with a couple of grainy overexposed images of its black and white versions. It's Apple-style secrecy for Windows Phone, Nokia has declared, but apparently this rule won't apply to Symbian as along with the N5, a source confirmed to GSM Arena that the Nokia N6 and Nokia N7 are also on track, both building on the Symbian legacy.

We don't know much about them, but we do know something about the Nokia N5 – it will come with the latest Anna update, overhauled Browser 7.4 and a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash. The white version seems to also sport a vivid green back, while the black one keeps the same black color on the back cover. The interface also bears some resemblance to what we saw of MeeGo on the N9, but judging from the smallish screen, the devices will be mid- and low-level handsets replacing current Symbian^1 devices.

Nokia's new Symbian lineup might arrive in Q3: 1GHz CPUs and nHD displays




We knew Nokia plans to name each Symbian iteration from now on with a woman's name alphabetically - Anna, Belle, and so on, but nothing was said about the handsets receiving girly names themselves. Nokia's upcoming Symbian lineup includes four devices, leaked as the Nokia Helen, the Nokia Cindy, the Nokia Zeta and the Nokia Fate, but they might end up named with the more conventional Nokia model numbers upon release, according to what's supposed to be a leaked roadmap.

All four handsets are expected in the third quarter of the year with 1GHz processors and screens with a resolution of 360 x 640 pixels, tech blogger Eldar Murtazin added. The blogger mentioned that Nokia is most likely to release the handsets in September.

The roadmap shows a Nokia Helen, with 3.5" ClearBlack display, this time of the LCD variety, running Symbian Belle, which is pinpointed a successor to the C7, with 8MP fixed-focus camera. Combine this with the expected September released date, and we might have the Belle update around that time of the year on more devices.

Another interesting proposition is listed as the Nokia Zeta, which would carry a 3.2" AMOLED display, and, as far as we can understand from the chopped sentence, is aiming to be "the thinnest smartphone ever", again running Symbian Belle, and having an NFC chip inside.

On another sheet are listed two more handsets - the Nokia Fate and Nokia Cindy, with the key words for those being "affordable" and "attractive price". Both are listed with a 3.2" AMOLED displays plus 5MP cameras, but the Nokia Cindy has NFC, whereas the Nokia Fate doesn't, which might be the chief difference between these two.





What's most interesting about these eventual Symbian devices is that all chipsets are listed as 1GHz, so we might be finally getting rid of the sub-700MHz silicon that is powering the current flagships, as was promised by Nokia. Whether these will be dual-core or not, is not specified, but if they were, the list would surely have mentioned it in the description - you know, for bragging rights. If the whole thing is real, we should know more in the upcoming months. After all, Nokia promised 10 more Symbian devices in the next 12 months or so.

Nokia and Microsoft holding an event on August 17


It seems August 17 could be the day we see an official announcement regarding the first Nokia Windows Phone. Microsoft and Nokia are handing out invites to an event being held in Cologne on the said date, which does not go into the specifics of the event (apart from the fact that there will be a live act and a great DJ) although we do have reasons to believe Nokia will be announcing their new handset, particularly one running Windows Phone 7 Mango.



There will also be a raffle at the event, where the winners can get three of the Xbox 360 250GB consoles with Kinect and more importantly (for us, at least), three of the upcoming Nokia Windows Phone handsets as soon as they are available. This makes us even more confident in our assumption that there will in fact be a new Nokia Windows Phone announced that night. They say they will make it an evening to remember. We shall see.

Nokia 701 RM-744 images spotted?



What you see above could be the real deal or a fake, we still cannot confirm it just yet. Still, they’re rumored to be the upcoming Nokia 701, also known by its model number RM-744 if you prefer to take that route. According to the person who leaked this image, this particular model hails from ANATEL (Agência Nacional de Telecomunicações), where the mole claims that this agency is similar to the FCC that will see all new phones that are meant to arrive at the market go through Anatel’s inspection and authorization process.

Helen is another nickname for the Nokia 701, where it is tipped to be the successor to the Nokia C7. Strangely enough, don’t you think that this particular model looks so much like the Nokia C7 itself, lending credence that it might be a fake?

Apart from that, the label within does seem to be less than authentic, as it could be the work of a Photoshop artist, but it definitely does not look like a photograph of a particular tag.
