Nokia 5800 XpressMusic launched in Taiwan for $446

Just as we had earlier reported, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic has just been officially launched in Taiwan, and will be available for a price of NT$14,900 or about $446 USD.

That still isn’t quite the same figure as what Nokia has promised, and it wasn’t specified exactly what factors were taken into account while determining the handset’s price.

But the interesting thing is that it seems to fall in line with what we previously uncovered: that vendors were allowed to tack an extra $100 or so on the 5800 XpressMusic’s price and just bundle it with some sort of promotional material or free stuff.



With its current retail price, both in Taiwan and Spain, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic might as well be a high-end phone. But nay, says Nokia, for it is only intended for the mid-range market.

And speaking of the market, it is said that Nokia plans to launch a Taiwanese version of the Nokia Music Store and Comes with Music, as well as a Chinese-version of Ovi in 2009.

That’s all well and good, but one thing Nokia has to work on is getting the handsets that work great with the services out into the hands of as many customers as possible in the first place. Then maybe their services will really start to get some traction.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic now shipping

Do you hear that? No? No, those aren’t the “winds of change.” Instead, those are Nokia 5800 XpressMusic units, coming your way soon, because Nokia has finally started shipping those highly anticipated and much-awaited things.

As earlier reported, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic will be available in markets such as Russia, Spain, India, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Finland, among others, at slightly different price points depending on how much local resellers plan to offer it.



Quick refresher — the 5800 XpressMusic will be Nokia’s first touchscreen device for the mainstream market, and will offer the following key features:

    - 3.2″ widescreen display with capacitive touchscreen (16:9 aspect ratio, 30FPS video record/playback)
    - 3.2 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens and dual-LED flash
    - built-in accelerometer, GPS, and Wi-Fi
    - 3.5mm headphone jack and 8GB memory in-box
    - Series 60 5th Edition OS with Share on Ovi, Flickr, or Facebook

Of course, there’s a lot more in store for future Nokia 5800 XpressMusic owners, but the best way to find out about these is to just see for yourself personally. Since it’s already shipping now, that won’t be much of a problem.

The problem, then, would be its unforgiving and controversial retail price. Here’s hoping things go back to normal–as in Nokia normal–and pricing drops to 279 EUR flat, if not lower.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic launch dubbed 'stunning success;' 120 Russians can't be wrong



We love covering the antics of gadget-crazed buyers on launch day as much as anyone, whether it be die-hard gamers waiting for a PS3 or international fanatics clamoring for Apple's latest. Sometimes, though, these big launch sellouts feel a bit... contrived. Such is the case with Nokia's 5800 XpressMusic, dropped first in Russia on Wednesday ahead of its worldwide release yesterday. An internal memo (conveniently posted onto the Mobile-Review forums by a Nokia employee) talks up the usual release day shenanigans: buyers camping for days, bribery attempts for spots in line, inventory disappearing in minutes, and an inevitable prediction that this thing will be bigger than the iPhone. However, while the memo liberally quotes from the LiveJournal musings of Mobile-Review editor Eldar Murtazin, it skips over one choice bit of information he provided: a measly 120 phones were available at this "flagship" location in Moscow. So, is this a "stunning success" or a "desperate attempt at launch-day hype?"

Apparently, someone has allegedly done the very first unboxing ceremony of the highly anticipated Nokia 5800 XpressMusic model to show you what to expect inside the box!

Video is from Russia of course and it is on Russian but it still worth watching just to see phone in action once again if nothing else!

It is pretty detailed seven minutes long walkthrough the content of the box, overview of the hardware and software as well and it offers a first look at the final production model of the long awaited Nokia 5800 and everything that you should get with it!!

Nokia Quality Woes:
Build Quality Problems With Nokia 5800



During the first days of using the Nokia 5800 XM, our Hidetoshi noticed a couple of rather concerning build quality problems, most notable of which was an ugly crack in the Nokia 5800 casing that appeared near the power button.

Beside this big build quality flaw there are lot of minor mainly software related like the annoying display colour issue and after couple of days Hidetoshi is disappointed enough to say that: “Nokia 5800XM is actually a plastic toy with brand new S60 5th gen system in the market”

Have Nokia let their standard drop or have Hidetoshi just been unlucky? What is your experience with Nokia 5800 build quality or Nokia phones generally?!

However, I just hope that his phone was one of the first off of the production line and Nokia has since caught the problem and that it is already fixed or at least they are trying to fix this?!?

You see, when buying a certain product, I always wonder how long it will last and to be completely honest with you I am not optimistic after this report especially considering growing Nokia problems with quality lately.



Did I already say that somewhere? Yes? Good! I'm repeating myself on purpose :] They need to realize that all these quality woes irritate users a lot and they should not cripple their future by producing the phones that looks like artefacts after just few weeks of use!?



Screen display colour sometimes changes randomly on its own!



I know that early adopters always get screwed on price but quality shouldn’t be an issue!

Pojavio se u prodaji u oglasima. Prilicno sam pozitivno iznenadjen pocetnom cenom. Ako je ovo pocetna cena, verujem da ce do kraja januara biti oko 300 i to u radnjama. Inace ja sam se bas nalozio da kupim ovaj telefon, ali me je onaj tekst iz prethodnog posta pokolebao, jer nokija poslednjih godina definitivno kuburi sa kvalitetom, sto im je ranije bio jedan od glavnih aduta. Sta vi mislite, koliko su tacne ove price o losem kvalitetu izrade?

Na osnovu dosadasnjeg iskustva, veoma je moguce da i nije nesto preterano kvalitetno odradjen. Jedino kvalitetno sto Nokia radi je E serija....
