Flyers say Pronger out for rest of the season

Chris Pronger's season is over due to post-concussion syndrome.

The Philadelphia Flyers said Thursday that after meeting with two concussion specialists, it was recommended that their captain not play again in 2011-12.

"After consultation with respected concussion specialists Dr. Joseph Maroon and Dr. Micky Collins, it is the opinion of both doctors that Chris is suffering from severe post-concussion syndrome," general manager Paul Holmgren said Thursday. "It is the recommendation of Drs. Maroon and Collins that Chris not return for the remainder of the 2011-12 season or playoffs.

Devils retire Scott Niedermayer's No. 27

NEWARK, N.J. -- Scott Niedermayer spoke with the same type of grace with which he played.

On a night in New Jersey that belonged to him and his No. 27, Niedermayer took several minutes out of his speech to thank so many people, including many from the Devils organization, both alive and deceased, to the training staff, former teammates, ex-coaches, the evening's MC, Mike Emrick -- and his family, even the one that housed him when he first came to New Jersey in 1991 as an 18-year-old.

At the same time, the Devils did all they could to thank Niedermayer, making Friday night at Prudential Center all his as they sent his No. 27 up to the rafters to join Scott Stevens' No. 4 and Ken Daneyko's No. 3 --  not to mention the Stanley Cup championship banners from 1995, 2000 and 2003 that the three of them helped to win.

Habs fire Martin, name Cunneyworth interim coach

MONTREAL - Montreal Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier made a bold move Saturday morning, firing his head coach and personal friend Jacques Martin and replacing him with Randy Cunneyworth.

For Cunneyworth this is his first NHL head coaching position.

"I met Mr. Martin very early this morning," Gauthier said at a news conference Saturday morning. "I can tell you I didn't sleep much last night."

Gauthier said he has been concerned with how the Canadiens had been playing during the past few weeks, a period during which the team has been treading water with a record of 4-4-4 since Nov. 19.

"The primary reason is that the team is not performing as well as it should," Gauthier said. "Especially in the last few weeks, we didn't really know what was coming out of the box, the way we were losing leads and losing games.

Cunneyworth will be taking over behind the bench as interim coach for the remainder of the season, while Larry Carriere, an assistant to Gauthier, will become an assistant coach.

Report: Turris traded to Ottawa for Rundblad, pick


The Phoenix Coyotes have reportedly traded Kyle Turris, the third pick in the 2007 Entry Draft, to the Ottawa Senators, according to multiple media outlets.

Ottawa will send defenseman David Rundblad and a second-round pick to the Coyotes, according to a report from Sportsnet's John Shannon.

Turris has 19 goals and 46 points in 137 career NHL games. He missed the start of this season because he held out for a new contract as a restricted free agent. The 22-year-old center has no points in six games since signing a two-year contract worth $2.8 million.

Rundblad was a first-round pick in the 2009 Entry Draft by the Senators. He has a goal and four points in 24 games for Ottawa, and was considered one of their top prospects before the season started

Report: Darryl Sutter to become Kings' new coach


Darryl Sutter will reportedly be the next coach of the Los Angeles Kings.

Helene Elliott of the Los Angeles Times reports that Sutter will take over on Tuesday. Sutter will replace interim coach John Stevens, who general manager Dean Lombardi put in charge after firing coach Terry Murray on Monday.

Sutter has spent 11 seasons as an NHL coach with Chicago, San Jose and most recently in Calgary. He also served as the general manager of the Flames until he resigned in Dec. 28, 2010.
