Krstic scoring with confidence

The question immediately made Nenad Krstic smile, as if he was sharing some private joke with himself, or found something amusing in the translation.

But it was a simple, innocent question, really: Who's the toughest defender you have to face nowadays? the Nets center was asked.

"Uh ... me," he replied.

Mee-lay? As in Mile Ilic? Is this some kind of Balkan witticism?

"No, no. Me," he repeated, this time with an embarrassed chuckle. "I don't know how to say it ... but if I ... I don't know if you understand me, but, it's ... ah, I can't say it."

You mean that only you can stop you?

"Yeah, yeah!" he said excitedly. "Exactly."

Well, there you go. He's fluent in English now, he only needs to learn how to sound arrogant in English.

But it's pretty clear by now that when he sets his mind to it, Krstic is unstoppable in any language.

For three straight games now, the Serbian sensation has scored 20 or more points for the first time in his career while knocking down 28 of 45 shots, the majority of which come from strange and distant places. It's a habit the Nets would like to see Krstic maintain, but even he knows that this streak is concurrent with Richard Jefferson being shelved.

 "Always put the team first," he said. "Richard is not here, so we need to step up. Scoring 20 points three times in a row, I didn't think about it that way. Like Coach says to me, 'Don't think, just play.'

"I just think I have more open shots. I'm not doing nothing unusual, just play my game."

 Through seven games, he's averaging 16.6 points, which is fourth among all NBA centers. He's taking down 7.6 rebounds per game, second on the team, and up 1.2 over last season's average. He's shooting 58.4 percent, which is tops among all NBA players averaging more than nine shots per game. And that last stat is perhaps the most impressive, because more often than not, he's launching shots from 20-foot range.

For everyone on the team now, one things stands out:

"Confidence. His confidence shooting the ball," Vince Carter said. "Just being a dominant player in this league. When he steps on the floor now, he knows how to get his shots. You run plays for him, but he knows how to get his shots off other guys as well. It starts with his post presence, his ability to score in the post. And coach puts him in great positions so he can shoot that jump shot, either with Jay or myself."

Time after time, Jason Kidd created open shots for Krstic against Milwaukee on Wednesday night off high screen/roll, when the Bucks figured they had to blitz the point guard after he started the game with a white-hot hand. Krstic made them pay, and he also delivered on his postups, as his decisions on the lower box have improved with every game -- mostly because he's getting into his moves before the double-teams arrive.

"He's been really, really good," coach Lawrence Frank said. "He's been as efficient as you can be. He's feeling comfortable."

Notes: Results of an MRI taken yesterday on Krstic's right knee were negative. Krstic said he is feeling no discomfort. Marcus Williams suffered a bruised right heel against Milwaukee, and Frank believes "at best, he's questionable" for the Pacers tonight. ...

Jefferson accompanied the team to Indiana for tonight's game, and may do some court work at the shootaround, but he isn't expected back before next week's road trip. ... Carter was within a point of the league scoring lead (behind Michael Redd) before his 15-point game Wednesday night, but a scoring title isn't one of his goals. "It would be nice, but it's too early," he said. "I'm just trying to play at a high level for as long as I can. It's something I wanted early in my career, but I want a championship now, more than a scoring title."
