Wilkins makes Hall of Fame

Dominique Wilkins has been elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution learned today.

Two people with knowledge of the situation said Wilkins has been informed of his election and has made plans to be in Indianapolis, site of college basketball's Final Four, for a formal announcement on Monday.

Wilkins, the leading scorer in Hawks history, appeared jovial when spotted at Philips Arena this morning.

"Well, I can't talk about it," Wilkins said when asked if he'd gotten good news from the Hall this year.

"Basically, they had told me when I was [named] one of the finalists that if I make it, mum's the word."

He confirmed he'll be headed to Indianapolis this weekend. "Two SEC teams in the Final Four — I've got to be there," he said with a laugh.

This is Wilkins' second year of eligibility for the Hall of Fame. He described himself as "shocked" a year ago when he was informed that he fell short of the required votes in his first year of eligibility.

In his NBA career, he scored 26,668 total points, averaged 24.8 points per game and was selected to the All-Star Game nine times.

He played for the Hawks from 1982 until February 1994, when he was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers in one of the most controversial deals in Atlanta sports history. Wilkins ended his NBA playing career in 1999.
