Synopsis

Em In a cottage in Itatiaia, Rio de Janeiro, Roberto Silvia and her friends come to visit Martha and Bebel. The two girls had moved there in search of a way of life-hippie alternative. Next door, Claudio lives, a writer with terminal cancer, in company of his girlfriend, Ruth.

Sylvia's boyfriend hides the fact of being pregnant. At long weekend, she intends to reflect on what they want and seek support, as in the past, Marta had a miscarriage.

Bebel do not like their presence in his refuge.   Like even less when they arrive Dinho, former boyfriend of Martha and the hysterical Carminha his new case, note that because his partner still harbor a certain interest in Dinho. This, a drug addict, heavy ends Carminha leading to an overdose. Roberto also feels a strong attraction to Martha, so, like Bebel not look favorably upon the presence of Dinho.

On a day find themselves alone, Marta and Roberto have a case, the same happened with Sylvia and Dinho, while Carminha, returning from hospital after treatment, attempts suicide.

This is an amazing piece of work from Masaru Konuma -- easily on par with "Wife To Be Sacrificed", if not superior. The beautiful Naomi Tani is an absolute powerhouse in this twisted tale of incest, betrayal, rape, domination, obsession and dark memories.

William Adamson (Mark Rylance), a poor naturalist, returns home to Victorian England after having spent years along the Amazon River studying all kinds of animals, mainly insects. William is penniless, having lost all his possessions during a shipwreck. Nevertheless he manages to befriend Sir Harald Alabaster (Jeremy Kemp), an amateur insect collector and botanist. Sir Harald hires William to catalog his specimen collection and teach his younger children the natural sciences, assisting their governess, Matty (Kristin Scott Thomas).

He becomes enamored of Sir Harald's daughter, Eugenia (Patsy Kensit), who is still mourning the suicide of her fiance. William and Eugenia quickly fall in love and lust and decide to marry. Their ceremony is shown as concluding in the marriage bed with the happy couple having enthusiastic sex. Sir Harald and his wife Lady Alabaster eagerly grant their approval of this match, but Eugenia's older brother Edgar (Douglas Henshall) takes an intense dislike to William, never passing up the opportunity to pick fights with him or to remind him of his humble working class background: "You're not one of us."

After the marriage, Eugenia produces five children in quick succession. She insists on naming the first boy "Edgar", after her brother. William never warms to the children, instead spending his time studying a colony of red ants with Matty and various children of the house. He writes a book about their observations, which is quickly accepted by a publisher.

One day, during a hunting excursion, William is summoned back to the house by a servant boy who claims that Eugenia wishes to speak to him. He walks into the bedroom, surprising Eugenia and Edgar while they are engaging in incestuous sex. Eugenia then confesses that she and Edgar had been having sex with each other for years and that her fiance committed suicide after discovering this. Eugenia also tells William that even though she knew it was wrong for her to have sex with her brother, it didn't quench her desire to do it.

William then tells Eugenia that he is leaving her and the children, which he is now convinced were fathered by Edgar in any case. However, he does promise not to tell Sir Harald the real reason behind his departure reasoning that the truth would injure the old man's health.

William, after being provoked by Matty, opens up to her as he has become quite close to her during the years. Although she denies having sent the servant after William, she does admit that she knew of the incestuous relationship that Eugenia had with Edgar and that the other servants knew as well. William then tells Matty of his desire to go back to the Amazon and not return. Matty reveals that she has booked two tickets on a boat departing shortly to the Amazon. William is initially reluctant for them both to go; despite his attraction to Matty, he doesn't feel that the rain forest is a suitable place for a woman. After she promises to help him in his work, and reveals that she loves him, William acquiesces to her plan. The movie ends with William and Matty departing in a coach looking out the window into the empirical world.

Eva (Valentine Demy) is an ex-prostitute and rich widow living in a huge countryside house. Eager for some company, she takes in a series of young lovers to fulfil her desires and also help around the place. Meanwhile, Eva has purchased a red sofa that once sat in a brothel and upon which she has ‘accommodated’ many men (and women) over the years.

Ah, to be a young man with all the world to explore. You may not have a penny in your pocket, but sooner or later your looks and charm will snag you a wealthy, sex-starved older woman to satisfy your every desire and let you crash at her luxurious pad. At least, that seems to be the case in this curious-but-tedious Italian sex drama... it certainly wasn’t when I was a starving student. Anyway, the lucky lads in question – Camillo, Sam and Giancomo – are more than happy to set up home with Eva and even start their own flower-growing business in her vast garden. Every evening they sit around the red sofa while Eva tells them stories of her saucy past as a high-price whore.

This has to be one of the least dramatic ‘dramas’ I’ve ever seen – it just ambles along, and every moment that you think is going to spark some conflict or tension just fizzles out. There’s no sinister agenda to Eva taking the boys in – she just fancies some company. None of them are jealous that they have to share Eva – in fact they get on famously. Their flower enterprise is a roaring success. Even Eva’s stories about her previous life in the brothel are completely pointless – we see her have sex with an old guy, a naive girl and demented English virgin, but with no relevance to anything else. The only drama occurs right near the end when Eva decides she needs an older man in her life and hooks up with an antiques dealer – the three lads feel threatened and hatch some half-arsed plot to put a stop to this relationship. But even this is abandoned almost as soon as they’ve thought of it.

The film is also resolutely unsexy – Eva’s three houseguests are all much prettier than she is, and they seem far more interested in each other’s company than hers. On the plus side, and in keeping with other spaghetti smut of the period, it’s sumptuously filmed and the countryside looks gorgeous. Dirty Love II is essential viewing for any young men planning an Italian road trip next summer – everyone else should steer well clear.
