Inspired by the same events which were eventually treated directly in Peter Jackson's HEAVENLY CREATURES (1994), the film is a perverse little item with rampant anti-Catholicism at its fore and which, unsurprisingly, was banned when it emerged; with this in mind, I love the way Mondo Macabro ended their description of it on the back cover: "It's a film that should be viewed only by those with very open minds"! Concerning two teenage girls' rebellion against their repressed upbringing by making a Satanic pact, in which they dedicate their lives to committing evil, it reminded me of other notorious "Chick Flicks" from the same era such as ALUCARDA (1975) and TO BE TWENTY (1978). The film doesn't have much of a plot and is deliberately paced, but it's held firmly together by the deliciously malevolent performances of the two leads (and particularly the untrained Jeanne Goupil, from whose viewpoint the events are related, and who subsequently hitched up with first-time director and former actor Seria!).

It seems to me that the reason the film is so obscure is that, when new, it was ahead of its time but, even now, it would be almost impossible to make (despite the ostensibly graphic nature of French cinema today) - featuring any number of shocking and potentially offensive images, which I won't spoil here for the uninitiated! Still, I have to mention the incredible finale, set inside a crowded school auditorium, which is sparked {sic} by the two girls' recital on stage of a strange poem by Baudelaire. The simple yet haunting music - performed on the organ or as a cantata - is highly effective, and the DVD extras (featuring, among others, separate interviews with Seria and Goupil) complement the film very nicely indeed.

Voodoo and Vaginas! Or, Sandi Carey meets the Rastifarians! Yes, our favorite porn-queen-to-be is in Jamaica, trying to escape from… well, we’re not sure. And neither is she. Her husband has disappeared in a remote part of the island and, since then, all manner of sexual depravity has befallen poor confused Sandi. Or has it? She’s not sure and neither are we.

But we don’t care either because watching Sandi get laid is so much fun, and deviates like us don’t know the difference between illusion and reality anyway! For instance, after fainting, Sandi comes to, all bound in leather, and crawls across the floor to suck first the toes, then the chubbie of her vanished hubby. But things get weird when her old man turns into bad guy Chang (director Bob Chinn). Sandi thinks she’s been drugged, Chang says she’s simply suffering from heat stroke, and we… well, we’re so tumescently happy that we’re willing to believe anything as long as we get more scenes like that. And we do!

Aiding Chang in the oddness is John Paul Jones (affecting a British accent), who regularly dons a wild boar mask and eats pussy while making ape calls, and his scary sister Carlotta, who claims to be an entomologist but does all her field work in the pubes of Rasta Tony, a voodoo pander with a long ganja joint. She also locks snatches with Sandi in another sizzling sex scene whose reality is in question.

Sandi is eventually admitted to a voodoo ritual where a naked Debbie McGuire (a once upon a time Mrs. Richard Pryor who’s also in Supervixens) writhes on the floor speaking in the voice of Sandi’s missing hubby: “Help me, Sandra, help me!” Say what?

Released by Harry Novak, shot on location in the West Indies and brimming with local color, The Devil’s Garden overflows with an eerie black-magical mood and floods the senses with erotic scenes of near explicit sex. When, following the voodoo ritual, Sandi wakes up in bed with her husband, and you’re tempted to grumble that it’s all just another it-was-only-a-dream ending… don’t. Instead, watch Sandi breathe a sign of relief on hubby’s joy stick as you sing along with the Deviate: “Oh, Sandi, baby, go do that voodoo that you do so well…” Besides, there’s another surprise in store for us after the sex. Isn’t there always?

My Queen Karo (2009)

This is far most the best Flemish film in years! It is mature in every sense whereas other Flemish films tend to look for extremity or genre. This film flows like summer breeze and has the nostalgia of a loved memory. The script is somehow the weaker point sometimes, but its well compensated by a brilliant cast. Up front of course we have the adorable Anna Franciska, but the true star of the movie is again Schoenaerts who seemingly effortless shifts from character to character in every movie and he does with the ease which mark the truly great actors. Also Deborah François is a delight to watch although her part is a little underwritten. Anyway this is a must see for lovers of honest and poetic cinema.
