Leeds United plan to land Blues striker

Leeds United Football Club are making plans in the event of a return to the Championship.

A win over Doncaster Rovers next weekend would see the Whites clinch promotion from League One, and they are planning to lure Mickael Forssell from Birmingham City if they succeed.

The Finnish striker is out of contract at the relegated St Andrews side next month, and if they decide against taking a two-year option on him, the player will be available on a Bosman free transfer.

"We have got players whose contracts are up that we cannot afford to renew with the wages they are on and they may decide to leave," City co-owner David Sullivan said.

Leeds fans, surely you would be happy with the addition of Forssell? And what about you Blues fans, do you think the former Chelsea striker is worthy of a two-year deal?

'Italian' Success In Belgrade Would Be A Great Omen For Leeds

Fans not attending Saturday's Kaiser Chiefs gig at Elland Road can instead watch an alternative musical extravaganza that could actually determine whether or not Leeds are promoted.

Given the choice between a ticket for the Kaisers or watching the Eurovision Song Contest then, unless I have got a bet on and unless that Swedish girl is as fit as everyone is saying she is, it would be the Menston/Leeds combo every time.

But if, like me, you're a big believer in omens then you may be interested to hear that whoever wins Eurovision in Serbia on Saturday could actually determine which division Leeds will be in next season.

Italy has only ever won two Eurovisions but astonishingly both successes came in years that Leeds won promotion. In 1964 Gigliola Cinquetti took the honours with her song called 'Non Ho L'Eta' (I'm not old enough) - a song that carried mild undertones of an under-age girl questioning whether she should sleep with an older man - and in 1990, just a few hours after Lee Chapman's bullet header sealed Leeds' famous 1-0 win at Bournemouth, Toto Cutugno won it with his rendition of 'Insieme' which, fittingly enough, is the Italian word for 'together' (as in Marching On).

Eighteen years on, the bad news for Leeds fans is Italy will not be taking part this weekend. In fact she has not taken part in Eurovision for a few years now.

Apparently (and I can see 'Royaume Uni' going down this route if things carry on as they are), Italy was unhappy with the infiltration of countries from the other side of what was the Iron Curtain and the carve-up that has since ensued and consequently they decided to call it a day. They felt they didn't have to mix in the same circles as Moldova and Armenia.

At this point, please insert your own joke about Italians surrendering so easily!

On the plus side, there will be a considerable Italian feel to this year's proceedings in Belgrade (Serbia won last year's Eurovision thanks in large to a load of votes from the other former Yugoslav republics). San Marino has decided to make its debut and their hopes are pinned on the five-piece Miodio - three of the quintet are Italian - and their soft-rock anthem Complice (Accomplice).

But if San Marino struggles, Switzerland has opted to bring an Italian feel to the contest for the first time in eight years, with local singer Paolo Meneguzzi and his tune Era Stupdeno (It Was Wonderful).

And if the Swiss fail to make an impression, Romania's entry has a verse and final chorus that is sung in Italian although I'm surprised they're going down that particular path again. Mihai Traistariu belted out a chorus in Italian and finished only fourth in 2006, the day before United's 3-0 defeat to Watford. Had he won, it could have been a very different outcome in Cardiff but this strengthens my faith in the omen.

Another word of caution; things could look really bleak for Leeds if San Marino, Switzerland and Romania all fail to make it. Like the Whites, the three songs must progress through a semi-final if they want to take their place in this weekend's showpiece.

Hopefully for Leeds it will be a case of 'Congratulations' and fans will not be asking come Sunday evening 'What's Another Year?'

Robinson Leaves Swansea For Leeds United

ndy Robinson will not be a Swansea City player next season after his request for more time to decide was turned down.

Club officials have been seemingly growing more and more frustrated by Robinson's attitude to negotiations and in effect have moved first to avoid any further discussions over the players future.

Talks over Robinson's new contract terms broke down over the remuneration package put on the table by Swansea City.

Robinson's agent Neil Sang has also been under severe criticism for his part in the negotiation process. It marks the final chapter in the midfeilder's Swansea City career started in 2003 when he signed from Tranmere Rovers after failing to secure a first team place. In that time Robinson has made 157 apperances and scoring 47 goals .

The Club Statement Read:

Swansea City FC are disappointed with the news today that Andy Robinson is to sign for Leeds United.

Andy, whose contract with the Club expires on 30th June, has invoked his right as a free agent to move onto pastures new. Andy asked the Club to wait until after Sunday's League One play off final for a final decision on whether he would accept our current offer to extend his contract, but the Club felt this an unrealistic request and imposed a deadline of yesterday for Andy to make his mind up. This he did, subsequently deciding to move on.

Andy leaves Swansea City with our heartfelt best wishes and with many thanks for his service to the Club and the commitment shown by him over the years that he has been at the Club.

Negotiations between the Club and Andy over a new contract began last October/November with a view to agreeing terms before the January transfer window opened. Unfortunately, despite our best endeavours, no common ground was reached. At that point, it was decided not to place Andy on the transfer list as we felt he had a great part to play in our quest for promotion. The prospect of achieving that promotion with Andy as part of the squad far outweighed any financial gain we may have realised should Andy have moved on at that point. It was also felt that having gained promotion, it would be enough to further secure Andy's services.

Negotiations have been ongoing and the latest offer, had it been accepted, would have made Andy one of the highest paid players in the History of Swansea City FC. This Club believes we should set a realistic wage structure without diluting our ambitions to take the Club to the very highest level of football.

The plan this summer was to keep every player who played a part in our promotion success and to build on that by further strengthening the squad. To that end, Roberto Martinez is currently working tirelessly to bring in the type of player that will add to the strength and character of the squad, with the aim of making Swansea City a competitive Championship Club.

Once again, we wish Andy Robinson every success in the choice he has made in this next stage of his career.
