United supporting Falklands veteran Marc Elders is set to act as inspiration to the club's players.

Boss Dennis Wise has paid tribute to the lifelong fan after he sent an inspirational text message of support to the club.

"I've got a text from a Leeds fan I'm going to put up," Dennis explained.

"It's talking about the Falklands and how these lads were outnumbered eight to one. He thought they were dead and buried. He believed that so he said 'let's go for it' and he survived.

"It was the way that he spoke and the way that he said it.  It was fantastic and he lived to tell the tale because he said the adrenaline just let him go and he went for it - they all went for it - and he was one of the fortunate ones whosurvived.

"It's going on the board in the drsssing room. It tells you about life in general. It was good what he sent - the lads can read it and see what life is really about."

United boss Dennis Wise is in defiant mood as he prepares his troops to face Sheffield Wednesday at Elland Road on Saturday.

After tough away trips to Wolves and Birmingham City, Wisey and the players are looking for some home comforts as the battle for survival hots up.

Elland Road will play host to its second biggest crowd of the season - over 26,000 could turn out for the derby - and the manager is calling on a collective effort.

"We need to stay up and that's what we've got to achieve," said Dennis. "That is our aim.

"We've set out stall out, we know what we need to get and that starts from Saturday.

"It's not about putting pressure on me, it's everyone at the club, and it involves the fans as well. We are all going to try and win the game.

"You can't put it on one individual. It's a collective thing. We will try and beat Sheffield Wednesday. If the players give me what they give I'll have no arguments, and what I need is the finishing to happen.

"I'm still confident, some people may think I'm mad, but I'm confident of the lads we've got. We've got to do the same as at Birmingham and get a result.
"They'll bring a lot of fans and it'll be a good atmosphere. It'll be nice to have another good crowd and it'll be a good game.

"The lads are looking forward to it and go into it feeling quite confident. We've had a good look at them and hopefully we can create chances and finish them off."

The visit of Wednesday represents the first of successive home games - Luton are the visitors on March 10 - and the lads then hit the road for trips to Leicester and relegation rivals Southend United.

"It's an exciting few games," said the boss. "I hope the lads are looking forward to them all because I am.

"They are games we are well capable of winning. I'm not saying we are going to do that, but there is a possibility.

"I actually thought the turning point had come the other day when Cressy's shot (pictured) hit the keeper, bobbled a lot, and hit the post, but it got taken away from us. One of them would be very nice."

The manager insists he is still not looking at results elsewhere and is backing the results of his own players to secure safety.

"We look at what we've got to achieve," he said.
"You can hang onto the others and then it's 'Oh my God'. You can drive yourself mad. It's better to worry about your side.

"There's a points tally and we know where we are going. We've got to achieve that - if we don't we are in trouble."

The injury situation shows no sign of easing for the weekend trip either and resources are again limited for the boss.

"Foxey was ill at the last minute at Birmingham," revealed Dennis. "He woke up not very well then Armando comes on and he has a problem. We're looking at him at the moment.

"Casper (pictured) has a tear in his thigh, but I've got Graham Stack. He was unlucky with the situation, but they are both good goalkeepers so it isn't a worry. Casper won't be too long."
