Blades sign Kilgallon from Leeds

Sheffield United have bought 23-year-old defender Matthew Kilgallon from Leeds United for £1.75m.

The England Under-21 international has signed a three-and-half year contract in a deal which could increase to £2m.

"Playing in the Premiership is what I've always wanted to do." Kilgallon told BBC Radio Sheffield.

While Blades boss Neil Warnock said: "We offered more in the summer, so it's a good piece of business. Sometimes you are rewarded for patience."
Kilgallon was a product of the Leeds United Academy and played 95 times for the Elland Road outfit and also had a loan spell at West Ham.

And the defender added: "This is a big opportunity for me in the Premiership. I'm here now and I'm really excited about it.

"I've played well in the Championship, but now this is a step up, so I have got to prove myself.

"I played a few games in the Premiership when I was younger and I did OK, but now I have to show what I can do all over again.

"I'm 23 today, and now I want to establish myself as a good, young defender in the Premiership. I want to do as well as I can."

And Warnock said that his new signing - the first of the January transfer window for the Blades - would relish the challenge of making a first-team place his own.

"He is the type of boy that fits into the squad. He is a nice lad, but not too nice on the pitch, which is what we want," added the Blades boss.

"I think we'll bring the best out of him. He'll enjoy playing with us, and the squad will enjoy having him around.

"He gives us a bit more quality, and that's what we are trying to do. We're trying to improve the squad.

"He still knows he has a job on his hands to establish himself at this level, but that's a great challenge for somebody like him."

Thompson set to seal Leeds switch

Championship strugglers Leeds are "quite close" to signing midfielder Alan Thompson from Celtic according to Leeds assistant boss Gus Poyet.

The 33-year-old, who joined Celtic from Aston Villa for £2.75m has held talks with the club but Poyet is confident the deal with go through.

Poyet told the club's website: "We've been looking for a couple of weeks and it's quite close.

"It's a case of medicals and things but we hope to have him training."

Thompson has not featured for the Scottish champions this campaign but has made over 200 appearances and scored 51 goals during his time at Celtic Park.

How can Leeds save themselves?

Leeds United are already occupying the lowest league position in their 88-year history - but how can they stop things from getting any worse?

he beleaguered Elland Road club have won only one of their last 10 matches and are six points adrift of safety at the bottom of the Championship.

With 18 games left, a first-ever relegation to the third tier of English football is looming - and time is running out for Dennis Wise's side to save themselves.
Four new faces have arrived during the January transfer window but results have yet to improve and a difficult trip to fellow strugglers Hull City awaits on Saturday.

The Leeds squad are at a training camp in Cyprus this week and Wise's assistant Gus Poyet tells BBC Sport how they plan to beat the drop.

TEAM BONDING

 This camp is to sort things out for the rest of the season. We are getting the players together to concentrate on the task ahead.

We knew we were signing new players - and we knew we needed the new players to get to know the rest of the squad as soon as possible.

This was the last opportunity to get all the lads together and make sure we know what is coming.

WHAT MATTERS NOW

There are three months of the Championship left in which we have to win at least half of our games.
Every game is a cup final to get those wins - and no other results are any good to us.

From now until the end of the season, let's say there is a table in there from Leicester, who are nine points ahead of us, downwards.

There are teams with points already and we are on zero with Southend. That is a mini-league that we have to win, or at least make sure we are not in the bottom three.

Results matter now more than performances. It is not how we get those wins that matters, just that we get them.

You cannot say that at the beginning of the season when you have got 46 games in front of you but when you reach this stage, with the position we are in, it is definitely not about performances anymore.

To be fair we have played better than before in our last four games but we have only won one of them.

When you play well it should be easier to win games because when you play well you are supposed to be creating chances and in control of the game but it is not working for us.

NO EXCUSES

 We knew it would be hard when we came here from Swindon in October.

We knew from the first day the situation with the players and the financial situation. All that was clear so we cannot complain about that.

This club is huge. It is a beautiful club to work at and has so much potential - but for now our only aim is to stay in the Championship.
nd I am still confident we can do it. Even if we have lost a few games and we are running out of matches.

That is why we need the points now - and when I say now, I mean the next game, not the following week.

But we have already proved we can score goals so as soon as we put right the small things we doing wrong at the back I am confident we can turn around the results.

STICKING TOGETHER

he supporters have been absolutely magnificent so far. We have had great support considering the position we are in.

The only thing I can say to them is to keep going like that until the end of the season. At the end of the season they can make their opinions known but we need to stick together right now - we really do need all the help we can get until the very last.

The team spirit is better now - it is quite good. We have got better fitness and like I said before we have been playing better.

But all that together is not enough. We need something extra and we have to make sure that comes in the next game.

Menadžer Lidsa Denis Vajs zamolio je svog asistenta Gustava Pojeta da razmisli o povratku na teren.

Dovoljno ga poštujem da bih vršio pritisak na njega. Ukoliko odluči da nam pomogne to će biti sjajno, ali on je ovde moj asistent i to mora da se zna", rekao je Denis Vajs.

Menadžer Lidsa bi voleo Urugvajca u timu, ali je dodao da je na Pojetu da se izjasni da li želi da u klubu obavlja dva posla.
