Apple may be including face detection technology in iOS 5, 3rd party devs welcome

We’ve already taken a peek at what iOS 5 has to offer, but it’s still in the beta stages of development. A report says that there will be a new feature that we haven’t seen so far – built-in face detection that is easily accessible to third party apps.



The same technology is already powering the face-detecting Photo Booth is OS X Lion, but it’s now coming to Apple’s mobile OS. Apple may or may not build their own app for iOS 5 that uses the technology, but third-party devs will get a go at it either way.

Face detection in the iPhone’s camera is one potential use (the obvious one), plus it could automatically tag your friends in the photo. But that’s for Apple to do – app developers should be thinking of other things (duplicating iOS functionality is generally not a good idea).

Several apps in the App Store already offer face detection, though very few devs have done it since that’s hard to implement. Once iOS 5 arrives, the number of face detection apps will probably grow fast.

What’s the coolest use for the new face detection features that you can think of? My favorite is this – glasses-free 3D on the iPad 2 using head tracking.

I’d say take all this with a pinch of salt, but how long can Apple keep the iPhone without face detection? The competition has had it for quite a while.

Justin Bieber Uses a Jailbroken iPhone




We don’t usually post stuff like this on iDB —and we certainly don’t have Bieber fever — but this was too good to pass up. Apparently, Justin Bieber uses a jailbroken iPhone.

As evidenced in one of his tweets, Justin Bieber uses a jailbreak Twitter extension called qTweeter. With over 11 million Twitter followers, we’re sure Justin is familiar with the best Twitter clients out there.



There’s really nothing else to say about this, except that we hope Justin reads iDB for all of his jailbreaking needs.

New iPhone 5 cases indicate a thinner but half inch wider and longer frame




Following our post with images of a purported iPhone 5 case, other sources have followed up with us with their own cases. This time we not only have a silicone case, but a hard case, too. The image above shows a top view of both of our cases. They both show a ringer switch on the opposite side of the volume keys, which is a shift from previous models of the iPhone. In addition, the bottom of these cases have holes for a separate speaker, main microphone, and USB dock connector. You may have noticed this on our iPhone 5 case post earlier this week, but today comes the more important information.



Our images were admittedly not very clear about the case’s thinness or if there was a “tear drop” as previously described by This is my next. Our new images are clear and there are appears to be a slight – not major – tear drop in the design. The case goes thick to thin from top to bottom. In addition, the sources who provided us with these two new cases have shared some dimensions. According to them, the case is 5 inches tall and 2.8 inches wide. These are tight cases so the iPhone 5 dimensions should only be a few millimeters smaller than those numbers. For comparison, the iPhone 4 is 4.5 inches tall and 2.31 inches wide. This likely will leave room for the rumored bigger screen, as reported by the WSJ, Bloomberg, and This is my next.



Although we are not able to absolutely confirm that these cases will fit the fifth-generation iPhone, the sources of these cases stress that the information used for design and manufacturing came from their own proven industry sources…Sources like the ones that provided amazingly accurate iPad 2 information and dimensions to case manufactures months before the product’s March debut. These cases are also just appearing weeks ahead of the iPhone 5′s debut. With the iPhone 5 most certainly in production, it is prime time for insider leaks to occur in Asia.

This Beautiful New York Girl Has Four iPads For A Head




This video of the “iPad Head Girl” walking around New York City is a new viral marketing campaign from Hearst, the company behind the new Cosmo For Guys publication that launches today on the iPad. Her expensive headwear features four iPads that show her head from different angles. But the best thing about this pricey hat is that when you’ve finished looking at her face, you can read her like a book. (Or magazine.)

Each device displays a video as the lady walks through a park in New York City. According to Michael Krivicka, the directive creator who worked on the viral with Thinkmodo, the only way she can see where she’s going is with a camera hidden in her purse that sends an image to the glasses she’s wearing underneath her iPad hat:

    ”Once the girl put on the “iPad head”, she was not able to see. And since she had to walk around the park, we had to figure out a way for her to see inside the iPad Head. So we hid a camera inside her purse that would feed live video into a pair of video glasses she was wearing inside the iPad Head. That allowed her to see where she was walking.”

After a bit of attention and a few strange looks, one guy figures out that the only way to interact with this lady is to touch her face, which launches the Comso For Guys magazine (wonder where else he tried touching first) Krivicka explains the analogy:

    “The concept and analogy here is to show a guy ‘getting inside a girl’s head’ and sort of ‘reading her mind’ by flipping through the magazine pages on the iPad. The reason for that is: it is the first magazine for men that is written by women, so for the first time women are letting guys in on what they think.”

First Look Video of iCloud.com Beta




Apple launched its iCloud.com beta tonight. The beta is intended for developers to test their iCloud syncing functionality, though there has been some confusion about who exactly had access. Early on, it seemed that Apple inadvertently allowed access to more than just developers, but we now hear that Apple has started shutting out these non-developer users.



iCloud is Apple's upcoming syncing and storage service for both iOS 5 and OS X Lion. iCloud (the service) stores your music, photos, apps, calendars, documents and keeps it in sync across multiple devices. iCloud.com (the website) represents Apple's MobileMe website replacement that gives users online access to their Calendar, Email, Address Book, Find My Phone and iWork data. The entire interface borrows heavily from iOS and Lion and incorporates many nice graphical flourishes and animations.

Apple has also revealed the pricing for additional iCloud storage. iCloud comes with 5GB of free storage, and the additional pricing is as follows:

• 10GB Additional, $20/year
• 20GB Additional, $40/year
• 50GB Additional, $100/year

Apple has said that purchased music, apps, and books, as well as Photo Stream, don’t count against your free 5GB storage.

Much more about iCloud should be revealed as the launch nears. Apple has promised that iCloud will launch this fall alongside iOS 5. OS X Lion will also need an update to fully support iCloud.

Griffin has an iPhone controlled helicopter, too




Add Griffin Technology on your wish list of iPhone-controlled helicopter makers (and Parrot’s AR.Drone and Keyword Shopping’s iHelicopter, if you haven’t yet). The Helo TC, announced today, works with a free iOS app that lets you control a twin-rotor helicopter by the means of touching virtual buttons or tilting your device. Interestingly, the app talks to the helicopter using an infrared battery-powered module attachable to your iOS device’s headphone jack rather than communicate via a wireless base station in your home or office.

You can even store your best maneuvers as presets and invoke them later to amaze your boss. We can tell why these things are popular in offices, if the below over the top commercial is an indication. Three people can play at once, each on a different channel. The Helo TC costs fifty bucks and is available now from the company’s online store and the iOS app is a free download from the App Store.
