In this eight-part series, Tim Marlow takes us on a journey through the great art movement of the late nineteenth-century and explores some of the most beautiful paintings ever created.

The works of Manet, Monet, Degas, Toulouse-Lautrec, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Cezanne and Renoir appear everywhere and are well loved by the public and academics alike. But whilst their popularity is greater than ever, it is easy to forget the revolutionary nature of the Impressionist's art.

They broke away from tradition not only in their technique - by using touches of colour to capture movement and light - but in their subject matter too, depicting ordinary people at work and leisure.

A different style of presentation to the "Private Life of a Masterpiece" series. Here Tim Marlow walks you through the various galleries, allowing you to see the paintings in situ. Shorter at 25 mins approx each, this is more in keeping with his other series "Great Artists". Marlow is very clear in his presentation and an interesting speaker - these films serve as an introduction to each artist while also offering good insights into their work for those familiar with the work. Less ecstatic moments too (q.v. Sister Wendy's Story of Painting).
