#MWC09: Samsung Omnia HD i8190 preview video

Samsung Omnia HD i8910, formerly leaked as Samsung Acme, is by far the most interesting of Samsung phones presented during MWC 2009 in Barcelona.

Samsung OmniaHD comes with a huge 3.7″ AMOLED display and is able to record and play HD resolution video. Via DLNA interface it can also wirelesly stream HD movies to you DLNA enabled TV.

Other specs are also not too shabby and include Symbian S6o Touch OS, 8 megapixel camera, 8/16GB built-in memory (depending on model) and microSDHC card support for total of upto 48GB of storage,  Wi-Fi and 1500 mAh battery.


The large battery is actually a necessary thing, since HD recording and playback requires a lot of processing power, and that, in turn, tends to eat up the battery pretty quick. According to the Samsung rep on site, Samsung Omnia HD has enough umph to record about an hour of video at 720p. Though there are reports that Omnia HD has died after 40 mins of that.

On the other hand, I never shot a video longer then 10 minutes with my cameraphone, and rarely do anything longer with my camcorder. So battery may not a very big issue here.

Especially since the quality of HD resolution AMOLED display is simply amazing. For movie watching  Samsung Omnia HD easily beats any other mobile handset I had a chance to play with.

Due to the size of the display, Samsung Omnia HD feals a bit biggish, but is pretty -12.7mm- slim and quite comfortable to carry around.

Microsoft announced Windows Mobile 6.5







Microsoft announced the latest update to their Windows Mobile software, on Monday at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, bringing the software up to the rumoured version 6.5.

The refreshed operating system carries all the hallmarks of former versions, but has now been redesigned to include a honeycomb interface taking key inspiration from the company’s Zune MP3 player optimised for the touch of a finger rather than frantic stylus poking.

From your locked device you’ll now have a drop-down menu giving you shortcuts into the most frequent functions, such as messages or missed calls.

"Part of the new Windows Phone is that there will be a unified look",  Microsoft said. "Manufacturer’s will not be able to customise the interface as much as they have done in the past however will be able to make slight alterations here and there".

The news is likely to affect companies like Sony Ericsson, HTC and Toshiba who have in the past focused on customisation to make the Windows Mobile experience very different from what Microsoft supply.

"We have a very strong relationship with Microsoft", John Wang, the chief marketing officer for HTC told Pocket-lint when asked what HTC was planning on doing with the news, suggesting that HTC may be allowed a bit more leeway than other parties.

A new version of Internet Explorer will also be introduced, which Microsoft boldly claim will negate the need for a third-party browser. “We want to make sure that our browser has the best out of the box experience”, Microsoft told Pocket-lint.

Windows Mobile 6.5 devices should be  hitting the shelves in late-2009 in time for Christmas.

LG Officially Outs Arena, Sticks Out Tongue at iPhone



During LG’s Q&A session at Mobile World Congress, one gutsy press member fully called out the officially-launched Arena as an iPhone clone, as insinuated when some pictures leaked earlier this month. While it’s not a far shot, the Arena does have a few tricks that set it apart from Apple (NSDQ: AAPL)’s popular handset. For one, home screen icons slide left and right, allowing you access to larger groups of applications without having to change pages. The new 3D S-Class UI makes for some other interesting additions, like Rolodex-style contact browsing, and a cube layout for quick shortcut access. This OS will be making the rounds to other high-end LG handsets, but as stated earlier, LG is entirely comfortable supporting a multitude operating systems. Specs for the Arena include:

    * 3″ WVGA touchscreen
    * 3.5mm headphone jack
    * 8 GB of internal storage, plus microSD slot
    * DivX, Xvid support
    * Wi-Fi, GPS
    * HSDPA 7.2
    * 105.9 x 55.3 x 11.95mm

Call it a knock-off if you must, but from what we saw, LG managed to pull together a fluid, interesting and different user interface while still tapping something folks are already familiar with.

LG Style Rocks Transparent Sliding



For those who throw convention and practicality to the wind, LG has announced the LG-GD900 (a.k.a Style), with a transparent sliding keypad. To be launched in Q2 of this year, the Style isn’t especially crazy specs-wise:

    * HSDPA 7.2 Mbps
    * UMTS 900 (1900/850)
    * GSM (850/900/1800/1900)
    * 105 x 52.5 x 13.4 mm

All in all, a phone that clearly puts style first. No word on pricing just yet, and we´re still looking out for specifics on the operating system, but if it´s anything like the S-Class UI inaugrated by the Arena, it shows some serious promise . A lot of the inspiration for S-Class was pulled on representing functions with real-world objects, like a rolodex for contacts, and a radio dial for FM tuning.

LG confirms Android-powered smartphones for 2009!



LG’s press conference was severely lacking any kind of enthusiasm or spark, and that’s putting it gently. Between yawns and fighting the urge to take a nap, LG’s executives answered one very important question from the audience - would LG be making the jump to the Android OS? The answer was a resounding (well, “resounding” relative to the muted overall presentation) “yes.”

As LG’s executives put it, LG is working to bring a couple Android-powered smartphones for this year. That would put LG on track to announce the Android smartphones in the near-term - perhaps by CTIA next month.

LG picks Windows Mobile as its primary smartphone OS, plans to release 50 new phones



Kind of a big announcement from Microsoft and LG at MWC just now -- LG's going to make Windows Mobile its primary smartphone operating system, and it sounds like there's going to be some serious cash involved from both sides to make it happen. No specific device plans yet, but that's going to change big fast -- LG's going to drop 50(!) WinMo handsets on us through 2012. Yikes. Hope you're ready for some S-Class WinMo action, guys.

LG brings S-Class UI to Windows Mobile with GM730



Turns out LG's fancy new feature phone UI -- S-Class, as it's called -- isn't just for feature phones. The GM730 brings the same 3D interface into the wide world of Windows Mobile, along with 7.2Mbps HSDPA, 2Mbps HSUPA, quadband EDGE, and Internet Explorer Mobile 6.0 into a package just 11.9mm thick. Sadly, LG's elected to do nothing but 900 / 2100MHz with the 3G here, so North Americans are left out of the equation at this point -- but much of the rest of the world can look into picking it up in the first half of the year.

LG's GD900 previewed, features transparent keypad



Most of its "advanced features" are being kept under wraps for the time being, but LG is showing off its strikingly-designed 13.4mm-thick GD900 this week with 7.2Mbps HSDPA in preparation for a launch later in the year. By and large, the design DNA here doesn't break rank with LG's sliders of the past year or two save for one very important exception: it features the world's first transparent keypad that softly glows when open -- and we've got to admit, this might be one of those rare instances where we're digging sheer beauty over functionality or usability. The company has also designed a dedicated Bluetooth headset to go along with its latest work of art -- but unfortunately, this image is about as close as you'll get to any of it until the planned second-half retail availability.

LG GM730 - Arena UI on top of Windows Mobile

LG Arena KM900 phone may be the most promoted LG device at MWC 09 Barcelona, but it is not the only LG phone with the same design philosopy and “S-class” 3D user interface.

Quietly tucked in one corner of LG stand I found LG Arena’s younger brother - LG GM730 Windows Mobile smartphone.

LG KM730 features the same “S-Class 3D UI” that LG Arena has, and it is built on top of Windows Mobile 6.1 OS.

LG GM730 specifications include:

    * GSM 850/900/1800/1900, UMTS 900/2100, HSDPA 7.2, HSUPA 2.0 connectivity
    * 3″ 400×240 WQVGA 262K color TFT touchscreen display
    * 5 megapixel camera
    * Built-in GPS
    * GUI Acceleration
    * micro USB

LG did not have the working GM730 model at the show, opting for a phones with playing preinstalled movie featuring various interface details.

LG plans to launch GM730 smartphone in May this year. At first it will be running on Windows Mobile 6.1, but from this fall GM730 will come with WM 6.5.

LG hasn’t decided yet of whether and how to upgrade the OSes for early customers
