copy/paste:

Howdy.

So I make the beginning and start to answer the first questions. Beat, maybe you could mark answered questions above in the list ?

_____________________________

2.) Is it possible at the beginning to create your own character within certain limits, maybe to chose from a list of perks the character starts with ? Or will every hero have the same abilities and attributes ? by moetermoerber

Like in all games of the Gothic-series the third part won't have a classical character creation. The player will as always start right into turmoil and develop his character during his adventures. On the one hand the "basic equipment" given to the player at the beginning offers the player enough skills to cope with the first challenges but on the other hand enough space for forming a character.

4.) Will we still be able to chose the old Gothic controls or will the combat system and controls be fully redesigned ?
by X-or Bioman

Everybody who used the handy keyboard-mouse-combination will acquire a taste for the new controls immediately. Unnecessary mantraps have been removed and in particular the combat can be controled precisely and without any problems. It's a pleasure to watch Mike Hoge, Game Designer, while he is testing the combats, because with some sure instinct you are able to perform fantastic choreographies only with the mouse. And apart from the fact that the interface already proved in complicated tasks all main functions are freely configurable.

13.) Will we meet more pacific animals like sheeps in Gothic 2 ? by DeadlyArrow

Yes, absolutely. From butterflies over sheeps to screen-filling (if you stand right in front of it) animals you will find a huge variety of decorative fauna in the world of Gothic 3.

14.) That Lee will play an important character is already known, but which role will the friends of the Hero –Gorn, Milten Vatras (it is out of the question that they will reappear) play in the story ? by Peter Pollunder

Each of the crew members, with whom the player arrives in Myrthana, is an important part of the story. Especially the four friends of the Hero - Lester, Gorn, Milten and Diego - will accompany him through several adventures from time to time. If and how far the Hero will challenge the defiances together with them is up to the player, but the occasional joy of being reunited again is planned as part of the story.

15.) How long do you expect the player to finish the main quest ? How long will it take to finish the game with all sidequests ? by ken007

That's a question we can't answer by now. At present the Hero is running in quick-motion through the world so that our story authors can test and improve their work on the plot. Also, there is no voice output yet so that dialogs are clicked through in high speed. According to that, a sensible evaluation of play time is not possible. When we reach an advanced beta phase this question can be answered more concretely. But compared to Gothic 2 the amount of dialogs and quests rose perspicuously, so that we assume that the play time will rise too.

17.) In Gothic 2 we first met the Paladins, which made most players to join this guild at first. Will this be different in Gothic 3, so that we will meet different guilds at the same time and the player is able to chose right from the beginning ? by Wüstenkrieger

Our basic approach in this might be compared to Gothic 1. Diego took you at hand and led you to the Old Camp, but you met members of the other fractions at every corner who tried to attract the player. This is how it should work with Gothic 3 as well. You are thrown into the story and will meet important people who tell you about the interest groups and their relationships. Nevertheless it is our aim to give the player as much free space as possible, which especially pertains to the bonds to a guild.

23.) The current homepage was only meant to be a preview. When will the official page be released ? by WernerTWC

Actually the teaser page became sneakingly an official homepage and I am only waiting for an unobserved moment to remove the Teaser-Sign. There will be more exciting features and naturally many new information will be added in future, but there won't be any changes in design or style.

24.) How do you evaluate Gothic 3 ? Which improvement do you see most innovative ? by x850xt

Gothic 3 is what you would expect from a worthy successor, and it is even more. In the last few weeks we were able to recreate and refurbish the incomparable atmosphere of Gothic on the new technology, so starting with the game feels like a return into the well known and fascinating world of Gothic. I personally am enthusiastic about every new feature our programmers are providing us and I just can't believe what our self-built engine can offer. I am mostly impressed by the new animation system and its use during combat and the shader effects we use for the water and shiny materials, surface structures, skin ... But this are things other Piranhas might tell you more about.

Oh and of course: The new music system and the dynamic orchestral sound ... extra amazing !

25.) Wherever I looked, I did not find any international version of Gothic 1. Is there a chance that it would be re-released as part of a gold- or a budget-version ? by Joaquim Nogueira

Gothic 1 (international bilingual version where you can chose between German and English language during installation) is in press room right now and will be in our web store within the first week of february.

Answer from PB|Mattes:

══════════════════════════════════════════════════

Hi together !

5.) Can we take all professions at the same time or do we still have to chose one job for the character, which he will perform until the end of the game ? How many professions are we able to chose from ? by Gruselgurke

We will have a fistful of professions and many fighting- and magic talents. It is up to the player whether he will learn all of them or wants to specialise in one profession. But a player who is willing to learn everything might have to spent many learning points...

16.) Are there guilds we already saw in Gothic 2 or only new factions ? by aditu

There will be known guilds, e.g. the mercs or the paladins. But since we changed the guild system the player will not only belong to one guild.

24.) How do you evaluate Gothic 3 ? Which improvement do you see most innovative ? by x850xt

It's too early to judge the game. One improvement which I really enjoy is our system of comments. NPC appear more lively and it is just fun to listen to comments to different situations.

Answer from PB|Cartsen.

══════════════════════════════════════════════════

Jo, hi !

21.) In what ways you have planned to implement the use of physics ? Are you going to support AGEIA PhysX SDK ? by Sorin T

Physical effects will be implemented where it is useful to raise the atmosphere, e.g. particle collision or weather effects which are controled by the physics system.

PhysX SDK support is already implemented and the hardware will be supported too, but only after release with a patch. Player with PhysX SKD hardware will profit from the higher details, but of course the acceleration cards won't have any influence on gameplay.

24.) How do you evaluate Gothic 3 ? Which improvement do you see most innovative ? by x850xt

Personally I think that the graphics and music quality is searching for something comparable.

I can't say which improvement I find best, to give a statement to this I have to lock myself into my room and play through the game. There are many things which surpass the feature content of Gothic 2, e.g. the interface or the combat.

PB|Kurt gave an answer some minutes ago.

══════════════════════════════════════════════════

Greetings !

20.) What will the water in Gothic 3 look like ? Will it react on interaction, will Shader like in Half-Life 2 be used or are there any waves ? What about a dynamic environment with leaves falling down the trees, floating rivers which catch the player or weather which influences the game ? by Ioannis Nikiforakis

We are going to display the waves and the current of the water with shaders through the use of Bump- and Normalmapping (for lakes and rivers) as well as through geometrical waves (for the ocean). Additional waves will be drawn on the surface when the Hero or a NPC walks through the water.
The water won't be able to drag the player along, because it is either not deep enough (rivers) or the current is not strong enough (lake).
The weather will take effect on the game through different ambient-effects depending on several aspects like the region, the day-time or the meteorological conditions, but there are no plans to constrain the player or the NPCs in their movement or their possibilities in acting.

22.) Which features does the engine support ? What about Shaders, Normal- or Paralax-Mapping or HDR ? Is there support for EAX 4.0 ? by Ioannis Nikiforakis

Every shader version from 1.x to 3.0 is supported by our engine. According to that the use of HDR and normal maps is possible, too.

Of course our sound output will support multi speaker setups (e.g. 5.1 or 7.1). If and how far special EAX4.0 features like "Multi-Environment" or "Environment Morphing" will be supported is not sure by now.

Howdy, Kairo back on air.

Before I answer some other questions I want give you some word about how some people deal with this campaign.

- Of course we encouraged the moderators to repost questions which were already answered some time before, because actually we wanted to give more detail and information about these to the community as officialy published by now. But if the moderators are proffered with such unkindly comments like "Can't you chose any more decent questions" we can desist from such campaigns.

- The plan was to let this go over a couple of days and to post new information every day. This allows us, the developers, to manage this thing along with going on developing the game. First the moderators repress new questions, until we give our okay for the next load of them, so that the order will be kept alive and we do not drown in questions. So please don't be impatient, there will be more questions soon. I already read them and find them really exciting.

- Some answers which can only be given by the appropriate team member might be waited for, since not everybody is available for posting permanently, but have to manage Motion Capture-recordings or other dates. Instead of giving a half-hearted answer I wait until he has enough time again.

______________________________ ____________________

Okay, now the next questions.

8.) Are there special armors like the ore-armor in Gothic 1 and will we be able to use them ? Background is the question whether we will be able to finish the game without being member of a guild. by gv g

Yes, there will be special armors. But there is only a small connection in this to finish the game without being member of a guild, since you will be guildless at the end in any case, since there are no fixations. In some cases a kind of dresscode is a liability and in others not, but generally no guild enchains you.

11.)Will we have to fight more enemies which are able to use magic and are able to use more different spells ? Maybe there even will be creatures and animals which use magic ? by gothicfan

Yes, there will be enemies which are able to use magic and will attack you in many different ways. Monsters using magic will be implemented too.

18.) Will Gothic 3 be focussed on Warrior and Mages or will we be able to mix characters, so that we might play a thief mage with weapon abilites in the end ? Or is the choice of the faction more interesting for character development than character classes ?

19.) Might the player be kicked out of a faction when he does not follow its rules (for example when you are a rebel and attack another member of this guild) ? Will the player then be able to chose another guild or is it even possible to be member of more than one guild ? by Rethon

An excerpt from PB|Mattes answer will match perfectly here: "...But a player who is willing to learn everything might have to spent many learning points...". This means that you might mix abilities from every different area (Fight, magic, thiefs) theoretically, but only for a big price: You can do things only half of what is possible, because learning points are limited. So if you want to take a warrior into the adventure who is able to use some spells, then you can do. A handyman is possible too, but won't reach perfection in a single skill.

The topic of the affiliations to a guild has been touched in several answers now. In short: If the members of a guild find you cool and you sympathize with them a comfortable symbiosis will develop on both sides. You will get special quests, nice items, new skills, but you won't become a member meaning that you are bound to it. Ergo: If people don't like you because of your behaviour, it's over with neatness which is comparable to a kick out.

Tomorrow there will be more.

26.) Which equipment will the Hero have at the beginning. His trunk is on the ship which is not going to sink, so he should have access to his stuff inside, doesn’t he ? by Peter Pullunder and AliS

We are not sure about the equipment the player will be given at the start of the game. This will only emerge during final game balancing. But the Nameless enters Myrthana as a hero in full, therefore you can rely on that his equipment will consist of more than some pants and a heavy branch.

29.) Is there an advantage in using two weapons at the same time and can we carry two different kinds of weapons like an axe and a sword ? by Zakhar Sakun, Olympian Dragon and R@ptor

Not every weapon can be combined with another freely, since some make use of both hands coercively. But for the most one-handed weapons applies: There are no limits for the hands’ allocation. Of course there will be some advantages in using two weapons, for example an increased frequency in attacks.

30.) Did you ever think of the ability for the player to build his own house or to carry a sleeping bag so that he can spend the night in the wilderness ? by Titan123, Florian Weigerstorfer and Gysmo77

There is a good reason why this is not possible in Gothic 3. The Hero will be mired in an epic adventure and it should not be about the player who goes to sleep in his own bed. We enjoy much more the solution of being offered a place to sleep at friendly guilds or being on a kind of suvival-training where the player has to win the grace of a friendly host (or his scalp ).

31.) Can we enchant items resulting in a higher amount of damage or the enemy stiffening to a pillar of salt when being hit ? by Hector

Concrete questions like this are too detailed by now, so I hope that you are satisfied with “There will be enchanted weapons”.

32.) Will there finally be more readable books which gives the player an insight into the world and its history ? by Nudelauto

Since there was already much stuff to read in the other Gothics one rather can’t speak of “finally”. But of course this tool for growing the atmosphere and the presentation of the background story will be used in Gothic 3 extensively.

35.) Does the story include some kind of romance for the Hero ? Will we meet female warriors or women in high-ranking and important postitions ? by Rashnu and mattyk

There are several opinions among the Piranhas. I personally do not have something against and in a sentimental phase I even composed a love theme for Gothic 3 . But the majority of us thinks that a romance would only (if at all) play a subordinate role to keep a consistent atmosphere. So I think that I can keep my love theme and tell my girlfriend that I composed it only for her. Everything has its (dis-)advantages.

37.) Will whole armies be combating each other in Gothic 3 and is the player able to lead one of them or maybe just a bigger group of fighters ? How will this affect the PC’s performance ? Won’t there be any of these battles maybe because of this one reason ? by Tobias Neyer, micbomber and Dr.Bumm2

Since most players think of hundreds of NPCs when they hear the term “army” I will restrict my answer to your phrase “bigger group”. The amount of NPCs which are calculated and drawn at the same time is actually primarily limited (among other things) by the performance. Therefore we are searching for the best compromise between the impressive presentation of the orcish army and playability. You are able to “lead” big groups by talking and acting in a clever way so that you can win them for your own interests and cause according reactions. The example of the revolution, which can be provoked in cities which have been sieged by the orcs, matches into this scheme.

40.) Will dragons play a role in Gothic 3, because we can see them on gothic3.com ? by FXmonstr and gothic133

The right side of the banner shows an artwork which has been created by our brush-guru Ralf Marczinczik for an international version of Gothic 2. I was really taken by this picture so that I wanted to present this on the teaser-page at a prominent place. So this picture originates my personal artistic preferences, but drawing conclusions concerning the content is not possible unconditionally.

41.) Is an Addon already planned ? by Fabian Ekert, Titan123 and Joern Christoph

Sometimes somebody in the team says “Let’s do this in the addon”, which means ”there’s no time for it”. Sharp tongues allege that well-meant ideas are sawed-off by this term ("Sure, we can let the hero ride a meatbug, Kairo. Let’s do this in the addon.”) to becalm the author of this idea temporarily. But who knows…

42.) Will the game continue even if the player does nothing or is it always necessary to cause a reaction through a quest for example ? Or will this even be controlled by time (“gothic days”) ? by !GeNeRaL4DeAtH!

For sure it doesn’t make any sense to let the hero rest at the dock till the end of the game and tell him afterwards what happened and how this adventure ended. So some essential events have to be set off before the story continues, but in the phases in between some things happen occasionally without the player being present.

43.) Can the player learn special skills which only apply for these certain groups when he joins a faction ? by REF

Aye.

44.) Will a modkit for Gothic 3 be released (maybe together with the game) and if yes also in english language ? Do we have to be aware of basics in programming languages and will the creation of animations still be only limited to a few because of plug-ins ? by Bunduc Remus, Milgo and Björn Schramke

There are no concrete details regarding the modkit. Most likely there will be such a kit, but we will first think about something more detailed after the release of the game to prevent the release date from being moved, because creating such a kit costs time as well.

More like Hollywood/Mediaventures or classical ? At least we don’t know where the tracks which are public by now are used in the game. by chickenleg

Gothic 3 has a dynamical music system at its disposal, which we designed by ourselfs and which we customized for our conceivabilities. Thereby we achieved that the music adjusts dynamically to the players actions with high-quality tone comparable to a movie. Stylistically Gothic 3’s soundtrack is very versatile, since the world is, too. The desert of Varant or the mountains of Nordmar offer only little orchestral sounds, but mainly interesting and alien ethno-instruments. Here is a small ethno-demo with some snippets of Varant, extra for you.

Hi !

38.) Will there be more secret hideouts which are not part of the game’s events (e.g. the hermit in the G1 who lived in the stone wall near the castle) but which motivate the player in his urge to research and where you possibly can find nice equipment or artifacts which the player is not able to buy ? by René Grabher and Przemek Plaszewski

Of course the world of Gothic 3 will be full of secret caves and mini-locations. Many Gothic-players love to put away the main plot and to explore the world to discover hidden places. And this adventurousness has to be rewarded...

PB|Mike gave an answer earlier today:

══════════════════════════════════════════════════

33.) Will we be able to chose from different difficulties and if yes even during the game ? And how will this affect gameplay – are the enemies stronger or will give less experience then ? by Phynkchen, GIDI and barle

There will definately be difficulties to chose from. These will primarily affect the enemies' level. We are not sure about other factors which will have an influence on this and this question will be picked up massively during game balancing.

PB|Oliver also posted today:

══════════════════════════════════════════════════

46.) In the first Gothic, I was always amazed at how I could climb a mountain and still be able to look down into the valley below. This long viewing distance was also seen in Gothic 2, although even at 300% it always felt a bit shorter than in the original Gothic. I loved being able to see so far ahead of myself, as it really helped my immersion factor within the game. But these new screenshots worry me. None of them show any vast areas where I can judge how far I'll be able to see before the cut-off fog sets in. So my question is this: will your new technology still allow players to have long reaching viewing distances, or will they be shorter because of the more detailed graphics ? by Matthias Kreku

Yes, we plan to integrate long viewing distances. One can see far over the landscape, recognize contours, far-flung forests or striking places in the distance. But this option can surely be used on high performance machines only and should be disabled on weak computers, since it requires a high amount of graphics power and memory.
The immediate environs will be detailed, since miscellaneous optimizations will be used. For highest detail (watching from above the hills at a village and nevertheless distant items, villagers and animals can be identified as such) a computer with optimum equipment is a need. But like in Gothic 1 and 2 you will be able to adjust the amount of details.
The screenshots apply to the first Pre-Alpha-version of the game, where these systems and optimizations were integrated only partly or not at all, so we decided to switch the long-view feature off for taking them.

47.) Are there widescreen-resolutions to chose from ? by Justin Collins and Bobby

We're not sure about whether you will get this option in the menu. In principle there would be no problem to offer such resolutions, as long as they are supported by the graphics driver. But since most players call a 4:3 (1,33:1)TFT- or CRT-display their own and don't have any kind of 16:9-display in their living room we will think about integrating this directly to the options menu.

We've got news from PB|André:

══════════════════════════════════════════════════

27.) Are we able to attack several enemies at the same time or to use a sweeping blow (dt. “Rundumschlag”) with the new combat system and will there be other combos like knifing ? Uzair Hashmi, Timon Skerutsch and XY

Yes ! Everybody who's been hit by the weapon will perceive this somehow. When an orc leverages his axe everybody nearby should take cover.
The new combos are dependent on the kind of the weapon. A skilled swordsman will knife his enemy in the right moment whereupon he starts to lurch and will be stricken down to the ground by the following hit.
A brute axeman maybe leaves out the first part, hauls off and strikes down everything around him, but he might run into his opponents knife due to his lost defence.

28.) Are shields planned and will we be able to use them for attacks ? Will the shield be used automatically and can it be destroyed ? by Twilight, Matthias Dittmayer and Brille

The shields will only serve as defence in Gothic 3. They are not destroyable but since they can be broken through one should not hide after them too long.
The concept of using attack and paree in the right moment by yourself will be kept, but now you are able to hold a paree and do not have to repel every single hit.

PB|Mike answered some questions from the first load today.

══════════════════════════════════════════════════

1.) Will stamina play a role ? Will there be a display for stamina and will the inventory be limited this time ? by Saman, Joern Christoph and K1LL1NG_SPR33

Two times yes, one time no. The inventory won't be limited, but you are free to get rid of waste carding.

3.) Playing as a mage for example was hard because everytime you casted a spell you were not able to move and you were like to be on show. Will it be possible for the player to move while attacking ? by Sem

Yes, you will be able to move, although slower than normal.

6.) As you said there will be no procentual specifications for abilities like one-handed sword fight or bow fight. How does it work then ? Are there only stages like unexperienced/skilled/master or will the abilities to use a weapon be determined by perks ? by Rethon, Simon Geis and Daezzle-Flash

The latter. Everything will be determined by perks.

7.) Will the perks underlie a hierarchical order so that one perk leads to another which can be learned, or can we chose from every perk at every time ? by Sem

In most cases all percs are arbitrary, only few are dependent on another one.

24.) How do you evaluate Gothic 3 ? Which improvement do you see most innovative ? by x850xt

1. Freer gaming: One is not bound to a linear strand and choice and order of quests can be destined by the player to the greatest possible extend.
2. Graphics and animations made a big step forward, thereby everything seems to be more "authentic". We now are far beyond from what you can see on the last shown pictures.

Take care.

51.) Do we have the option to change the look of the hero (e.g. long hair), has it already been changed respectively will the look change during the game (e.g. growth of beard) ? by Marko Lempke, Manolo and Daniel Bezimmienny

Since you are not going to generate your character at the beginning you start the game with the popular nameless Hero and his feral charm. You may add modish details and playful accessoires during the game, but apart from that options to influence the Hero's look are limited to one trifle: Decreasing the resolution will make the hero look more grainy.

52.) Will the hero get a name in the third Gothic or did you already think of a name ? Do you have the opinion that the hero should have one ? by Sorin T, Grour and Lacni

No, the Nameless is not going to get a name, only reverent titles like "the Liberator", "Subjugator of the Sleeper" or "The Dragon-/Skirt-chaser".

56.) Could you give us a small lineup of percs which we will be able to chose from, maybe a backflip or a sideroll and is the player able to perform these although he wears a heavy armor ? by Phynkchen, Marcin Cieslar and Kreydon

The more detailed your question is the more vague my answers will become: You may for example learn percs which apply to the Hero's movements or his skills. In addition there are many percs which serve for improving certain abilities in general.

60.) Will we see children in Gothic 3 ? by Falke1989, Damian and Dwal

No. There are a few things which won't help the World of Gothic become more atmospheric and striking:
High heels, Star Destroyers and children.

63.) Will the landscape be as "compressed" as in Gothic 1/2 or can we travel through wide grassland, fields or deserts ? And how will the change from one "big zone" like forests to snowy mountains be implemented ? by Fabian Ekert und Dtra Rag

"Compressed" ?! *snorts* You mean "enjoyable dense with an uncomparable value of adventures-per-squaremeter" ? The world is still "dense" which means: There is no boring free space. But all in all the world of Gothic 3 is wider in which the broad fields or deserts contain numerous distinctive rock formations or mini-locations so that there won't be optical boredom. And of course none regarding the contents.

64.) Since I play Dungeon Lords right now many similes obtrude. In that game you can find phantastic dungeons with attractive enemies, complicated puzzles and heights at the end. Just like the temple of the Sleeper in Gothic 1, only more complicated. Will there again and above all more of those dungeons like the Old Mine, the Orcish cemetary or the Sleeper's Temple in G1 ? by meditate and ed0_r

Of course gloomy dungeons won't be missing in Gothic 3, but the game focuses on events happening on the surface. Passionate cavers will be offered some nice dungeons, but most of the game will take place in sun-/monnlight.

69.) How do the friends of the Hero judge the decision of the player to join the orcs ? They are not going to be too enthusiastic about, are they ? by !GeNeRaL4DeAtH! and Roock

Imagine your best friend joins an organisation which wants to enslave mankind. You will inevitable think "Yo man, have fun !".

One answer from PB|Oliver:

74.) Will the game profit from Dual Core-CPUs and 64Bit-technics ? by Awatar Twilight, Lothar Schmitz and werner igler

For the moment a scene and the and the data associated to this are loaded in the background in a separate thread. And of course physics and sound engine have their own threads, too. This results in faster loading of new scenes on Dual Core-CPUs since this happens in the background on the other cpu. The same goes for physics and sounds.

Additionally we are testing the use of OpenMP (addition for programming which allows us an easier use of different threads in the source-code) to improve performance on Multi-Core CPUs even more.

And another one from PB|André:

══════════════════════════════════════════════════

57.) Will the hero improve his capabilities automatically, e.g. during fighting ? by Joern Christoph and Arag

No ! In principle improving the Hero's skill will work like in the other Gothic parts, you will have to find the proper teacher.

67.) How many monsters and animals will the world of Gothic 3 offer and how many of them do we already know from the predecessors ? by Titan123, K1LL1NG_SPR33 and Arag

This won't be given away now. But of course we've got some surprises for you.

73.) Will all cinematics/movies be drawn with game graphics and when will we see the first ingame-video ? by Christian, Error404 and Guybrush1980

The intro will be rendered, the rest will be shown ingame with the engine. You will see the first video... when it's done.

prewiev G3 sa 1up sajta:
Big hits in Germany but busts beyond, the Gothic RPGs slipped under the radar Stateside. Sporting grizzled graphics and a lousy interface, the first two were tough-love treks for the dedicated and diehard alone. A complex low-fantasy story further disaffected RPGers weaned on operatic dragon-dungeon-missile-magic, though a select few recognized the game for what it did get right: pre-Oblivion (multiform, evolving) A.I., the deepest dynamic social hierarchies to grace an RPG, and not-mere-hype alternate play-styles and endings. With the third installment slated for delivery this year, we cornered German developer Piranha Bytes for a sitrep.
Topping Gothic 3's list of from-the-ground-ups is the new feature-stacked Genome engine. "Our engine is now 90 percent proprietary," says in-house composer and sound designer Kai Rosenkranz. "And while we're not using a physics system as a gameplay element where everything can be pushed or pulled, in some situations players can now make use of realistically calculated physics." Magical gravity guns are out, in other words, but Rosenkranz says that items (or bodies) can drop down a staircase and the collision detection works perfectly. "We've upped the detail level tenfold using a tool that churns out vast amounts of trees and bushes with minimal render time."

Don't confuse render with random, though. Every single polygon in Gothic 3 is 100 percent handmade. And the interface for interacting with the environment has been completely reworked, too. In the first and second games, everything save panning your view was a finger-gnarling key press, including combat. "Most experienced RPG players liked the keyboard interface," defends Rosenkranz, but he admits the team listened carefully to first-person control feedback to eliminate many of the old system's flaws. "Everything is drag-and-drop now, and combat can be controlled with nothing but the mouse."

Man of Myrtana
Capitalizing on its stock in trade, Gothic 3 spins the story of another nameless fellow who starts as a greenhorn and becomes a hero in the end. "Actually, we never planned any sequels," notes Rosenkranz. "But since everyone loved our protagonist from the original Gothic, he's been our mainstay for the follow-ups. And now he's off the island." About time. Finally hauling tail off said island (it was called Irdorath) and sailing for the mainland (three times the size of Gothic II's), Piranha Bytes intends to escalate the series' cliched humans-versus-orcs story in entirely untypical ways. "Essentially, the kingdom of Myrtana is shattered by the war against the orcs," explains Rosenkranz. "By the time the player arrives, the orcs are about to the deliver the death blow. They're basically enslaving the human race."

Common enough plot fodder, but that's too simple a reading. Like the earlier games, Gothic 3 gives you concrete antiplot options. Want to save humanity's sorry selfish butt? Go for it. But you can also side with the orcs or just tell both sides to get bent. In fact, even the alternate paths are now decidedly skewed. "In contrast to the previous Gothic games, we're not nailing you down in terms of how you achieve your goals," says Rosenkranz, highlighting new extensions to the series' already open-ended story system. "Once a quest is accepted, you can freely decide the best way to solve it. So, for example, the game continuously checks if you've done something related to a certain quest, i.e., finding an item, talking to a character about something, and so on. If a number of abstract conditions are fulfilled, the quest is considered finished." According to Rosenkranz, completing certain quests will synergistically activate further plot points and spin the story out in a very nonlinear way. "We've taken care to ensure you never feel overwhelmed by too many options, like dispatching someone who reminds you of the overall goal," explains Rosenkranz. "But the question then becomes, whom will you trust?"

Sounds like a certain other massively nonlinear RPG (read: The Elder Scrolls IV), but don't confuse Piranha Bytes' design approach with Bethesda's. While both toy with multiform freedom, Gothic 3's expansiveness is focused. That also means you're still not rolling a scratchboard character. "All Gothic games have one thing in common," says Rosenkranz. "They're RPGs without the character generation at start-up." From Gothic 3's outset, your "nameless self" already sports a list of talents. Thereafter, it's up to you to shape and personalize the character by expanding all the usual skills, plus a host of new ones. "In addition to the principal weapon and fighting talents, you'll now find a variety of small skills that work like perks," Rozenkranz continues. "That's brand new, like, for example, extra damage against orcs, two-weapon combat, or shields."

No discussion of a Gothic game would be complete without an A.I. drill-down. Peek in someone's house or draw your weapon in public in the prior games and you'd score a stern talking-to. Stubborn players got a sword in the gullet. "We gave our original A.I. a major overhaul," says Rosenkranz. "In addition to the human-to-human level, we've added two new layers: regional and global." Rosenkranz defines the regional layer as covering townwide attitudes and events for a specific region. "So whenever the hero manages to fall out of favor with the inhabitants of a town, this is being handled by the regional layer," he explains. "In time, the protagonist might use his persuasiveness to gain followers. If he wins over enough people in a city, he might trigger a revolution and expel or kill the occupying orcs." The global level, on the other hand, plies the huge, panoramic events that affect things like major plot checkpoints and war outcomes.

Comprising a cast of 1,000 unique characters and 75 kilometers of densely forested terrain, Gothic 3 has next-gen freeform play on the brain.and hopefully in the final product when it ships later this year.
