Apple iPhone and Google Nexus One beat Motorola’s Droid in touchscreen accuracy tests



When it comes to capacitive touchscreens – like the displays found on the Apple iPhone and the Google Nexus One – it’s not always just about resolution, screen size, or whether it’s OLED or LCD. It’s good to keep in mind that a large touchscreen doesn’t do you much good if it’s not accurately interpreting your finger inputs. Well, thanks to MOTO Labs’ new touchscreen accuracy tests, we now know how the venerable iPhone and the new Nexus One fair against the popular Motorola (NYSE: MOT) Droid when it comes to touchscreen accuracy and sensitivity.

MOTO pitted the Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) iPhone, HTC Droid Eris, Motorola Droid, and Google (NSDQ: GOOG) Nexus One against each other in two rounds of testing to compare each handset’s touchscreen accuracy. The tests used a drawing app on each phone to trace the path of finger inputs on the touchscreens as it moved diagonally across the display. The first test used light pressure to mimic light finger-flicks and flitting taps on the on-screen keyboard. The second test used medium pressure to simulate heavier finger inputs, like scrolling through a webpage. The point of the test were to determine how closely the lines drawn on the screen matched up with the actual path of finger inputs.



The results? In both the light- and medium-pressure tests, the iPhone showed precise lines that “indicate accurate representation of finger path,” while exhibiting some loss of sensitivity at the edges of the display. Both the Google Nexus One and HTC Droid Eris showed a “fairly linear track, with some waviness,” putting both phones in the runner-up position behind the iPhone – which makes sense, seeing as how both phones are made by HTC. The worst touchscreen of the bunch was the Motorola Droid, which resulted in a “stair-stepping” pattern and “waviness” that indicates “inaccuracies in tracking travel of finger.

The takeaway here is that “all touchscreens are not created equal.” All other factors (cost, operating system, brand loyalty, etc.) being equal, if you want an accurate touchscreen, Apple’s iPhone is your best bet. If you’re willing to deal with a little inaccuracy in trade for a larger, crisper display, the Nexus One will be your phone of choice. For example, it’s easier to accurately tap a small embedded link on webpages without zooming in using an iPhone than it is on the Nexus One.

Windows Mobile click through rate 4 times more than RIM, Palm, nearly twice as much as Android – Time for ad supported apps?

Smaato Inc. have published the Smaato Mobile Advertising Metrics which for the first time revealed the  Click Through Rate (CTR) Index by Handset operating system. The metrics are based upon 3 Billion ad requests served in the Smaato Network in December 2009.

The December performance numbers for the different handset types show a significant spread between the operating systems in regards to the CTR. Symbian phones had the highest CTR (161) compared to the averaged Index of 100, followed by Apple iPhone (119, with iPod Touch).

Following closely, Windows Phone Handsets perform above the average indexed at 100 placing the smartphone handset operating system in third place for in the Smaato Index.The Index consists of the average CTR of all devices and this number is set to 100.

This was followed by feature phones, then Android phones at 65, close to half as much as the Windows Mobile rate. Following far behind is Palm and Blackberry, with an index rate of 28 and 26 respectively.

In short, this means the odds of your ad being clicked on Windows Mobile is about the same as iPhones and iPod Touch’s, and 4 times as much as a Pre or Blackberry.  While the distribution of an app may be better on the iPhone, the competition is also much more there, meaning it is just as viable to try an ad-supported app on Windows Mobile than the iPhone, and certainly much more when compared to RIM or Palm, where it seems you could never sustain a business based on ads.

Reč je o telefonu koji crpi energiju iz šećera, zapravo ugljenih hidrata koji se nalazi u tim zaslađenim napicima, a koji će se sipati u mali rezervoar.
Takođe, proizvođač tvrdi da će sa jednim punjenjem najnoviji telefon moći da se koristi četiri puta duže nego onaj sa klasičnom baterijom.

Napici koji su "lajt", sa smanjenim procentom šećera, neće moći da se koriste kao 'punjači'.

The Fairest Fight: Samsung i8910 HD vs Google Nexus One

When launched in early 2009, the Samsung i8910 HD (a.k.a. Omnia HD in some markets) had eye-watering specifications, certainly ahead of anything else in the Symbian world and, arguably, ahead of anything in the world in general. Bit by bit the wider market is embracing the same technology though, with Google's new Nexus One offering an almost identical specification and form factor. Which can only mean one thing: - time to get them both in-house, photographed and tested, head to head.




Nexus One on the left, obviously. Note the differences in default OLED screen brightness. Both devices have 'Auto-brightness' turned on, i.e. the light sensor is intelligently managing brightness in order to conserve battery life. The Nexus One's setting is tuned down quite a bit, I'm guessing the Google engineers were a bit worried about power. See below for a brighter side by side shot...

AdMob: Android numbers nearly double again



Another quarterly report from AdMob, another major climb for Android. The Q4 2009 numbers show that AdMob (which serves mobile advertising) fed nearly twice as many Android devices in the United States as it did in the third quarter, up to 27 percent (from 14 percent in Q3). Other bullet points:

Leading the way for Android in the U.S. in December was the Motorola Droid, with 11.3 percent of all U.S. requests. The Dream (G1) was next at 8.3 percent, followed by the Hero at 4.2 percent, the Motorola Cliq at 3.4 percent, the Magic at 3.2 percent and the Droid Eris at 2.2 percent. The Samsung Moment had 1.1 percent.
As it stands, Android had seven of the top 10 smartphones for the final month of the year and had 36 percent of U.S. ad requests. Also making the list were the iPhone (No. 1), BlackBerry Curve 8300 (No. 5) and Palm Pre (No. .
The U.S. made up 48 percent of December's 11.5 million requests.
Worldwide, Android made up 19 percent of ad requests.
HTC had 11 percent of worldwide ad requests, followed by Motorola at 8 percent and Samsung at 1 percent.
