HTC Smart is, ironically, company's first dumbphone


Remember that Touch.B that leaked a few weeks ago? Well, it's real now -- and amazingly, it turns out that the rumored non-smartphone status is totally confirmed. This would be the first time HTC has released a device that doesn't run a true smartphone operating system in the traditional sense of the word, instead going with Qualcomm's Brew Mobile Platform -- the very same setup AT&T's standardizing on for its dumbphone range starting later this year. It's got 256MB of RAM and ROM, a 3 megapixel cam, Euro-friendly 3G plus quadband EDGE, and the now-familiar Sense UI that the Smart shares with its WinMo- and Android-powered siblings. Look for this puppy to launch across Europe and Asia this Spring -- likely at a very, very competitive price point, if we had to guess.

Android 2.1 Coming to Other Devices Too!!

For those of you who were lucky enough to attend the Google conference today, or were watching the live video feeds/ blogs and paid attention during the Q & A section you heard some great news! Once 2.1 is open source everyone will get a piece of the newest version/action that for now is only found on the Nexus One.



Andy Rubin’s response to a question by Jason Chen during the Q & A:

Q: Why was it necessary for Google to design the phone? Why couldn’t it just be an HTC phone running the new flavor of Android? And will these new features be coming to Droid?
A: It’s inaccurate to say Google designed the phone (points to HTC CEO). [Google] is just merchandising it online. Everybody will get 2.1 when it’s open source, within a couple of days.

Others can now rejoice as the goodies shown in the Press Gathering from today will be soon making it to their favorite Android device! Hooray!

CES: Nexus One Will be the First of Many Google Phones, Google Products



Google is looking to bring more Google phones to the market, the first entry of which was the Nexus One. The Google phone--by Google phone we mean the official Google and Google-branded phone, not the "With Google" experience that many stock-build of Android devices carry--may give rise to other products, including different form factors and an enterprise edition. What manufacturing partners, pricing, carriers, and release dates are have yet to be revealed, but Google's VP of Engineering told Walt Mossberg that the future could hold a device with more battery--always a welcomed addition on mobile handsets--and physical keyboard. We'd be guessing it's a Nexus One Slider--perhaps like the Touch HD and the Touch Pro2 on the Windows Mobile side?

The sliding form factor with physical keyboard may be an attempt to lure iPhone or potential iPhone customers over to Android. While there have been rumors--perhaps to the wishful thinking of those who want the feature--of an iPhone model with a physical keyboard, Apple has thus far been stubborn with its own software keyboard, which it says is just as good, if not better than, a hardware keyboard.

According to Google, the Nexus One is the first in Google's "program" to dominate the mobile space. A smaller device, when prompted by Mossberg, was acknowledged by the VP of Engineering at Google.

Since Google contracted with one of its original licensee for Android--HTC--to make the official Google phone, we're wondering if other manufacturers--like Samsung, LG, Motorola, and others--feel left out. It's still unclear on what effects on the Android/Google ecosystem would be if future manufacturing contracts for Google phones--the official variant and not just the run of the mill Android--goes to a small pool of manufacturers. Thus far, Microsoft has yet to dabble on releasing its own officially branded device, perhaps with conscious regard not to alienate its partners.

Though, with the brand recognition that Google has, a free, open OS, and resources that Google may provide in working directly with manufacturing partners, we're sure those unlucky ones to not have been involved with the Nexus One are stuck between a rock and a hard place. Perhaps, this is why Samsung is developing its own OS called Bada.

CES: Windows Mobile 6.5.3 Spotted on Toshiba TG01, Pharos



It looks like Microsoft is on the verge of pushing out the Windows Mobile 6.5.3, though which handsets will get the royal treatment is still not out yet. However, that hasn't stopped some manufacturers from loading 6.5.3, which uses icons to replace the soft menu on the bottom navigation bar on the screen, onto their devices. Most notably, 6.5.3 was spotted on the Toshiba TG01, which was first to the market with the Snapdragon processor, and the Pharos Traveler 137. The OS build number is 23091.5.3.0.

Ih? Pa ne mogu da verujem, moram da pogledam. Ako je tako, doslo je znaci do velike promene i poremecaja u univerzumu jer su svi klipovi tipa - 'IShit vs neki drugi fon' samo bili tu da 'dokazu' njegovu superiornost ( ) 

Appleova internetska pločica



Svi u zadnje vrijeme nešto špekuliraju i predviđaju kakav će Appleov tablet biti. Svašta se tu može čuti, od najdivljih ideja (čitaj krajnjih gluposti) do naizgled razumnih pretpostavki. Na kraju će po običaju nakon objave uređaja svi biti razočarani, a nekoliko mjeseci nakon toga mnogi će uređaj i posjedovati.
Kako mi je “puna kapa” čitanja o tabletu (koji koliko o njemu znamo komotno može i ne postojati) ja ću sada iznijeti deset svojih pretpostavki bez straha da ću se jednom kada (i ako) proizvod izađe pretjerano osramotiti, a u nadi da ću time očekivanja svesti u normalne okvire.
Dakle, ako u ovom (ili sljedećem) mjesecu Apple predstavi svoj tablet uređaj, nagađam da će taj:
- biti zasnovan na sličnom OS-u/platformi kao i iPhone i da je očekivati Snow Leopard na takvom uređaju potpuno “van pameti”.
- biti usmjeren na multimediju, a ne e-knjigama kako mnogi nagađaju.
- biti nekakav čudan (no dobro, vjerojatno originalan) hibrid tablet, e-book reader i netbook koncepata, a neće biti direktna konkurencija ni jednom od spomenutih uređaja.
- biti bez ekrana sa takozvanom e-ink tehnologijom, već će imati običan LCD koji će biti ustanju prikazivati i filmove i tekst jednako (ne)uspješno.
- imati bateriju koja traje puno kraće nego što je to slučaj kod trenutno aktualnih čitača e-knjiga.
- biti neraskidivo povezan sa iTunes trgovinom.
- biti na našem tržištu dostupan puno kasnije nego u EU zbog problema sa copyrightom.
- biti napravljen ponajprije za konzumiranje i prikazivanje digitalnih dobara i informacija, a ne za rad na njemu i kreiranje istih.
- biti jednako zatvoren kao i iPhone i iPod touch.
- imati manje glamurozne tehničke specifikaje od očekivanih.
I za kraj, neće se zvati iSlate. U svakom slučaju biti će zanimljivo vidjeti što sam sve promašio.

Hands-on with the Linux based “First ELSE Phone”



Here’s a hands-on video with the  Linux based “First Else Phone”. The specifications list of the new handset includes a TI OMAP 3430 processor, coupled with 256MB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory. In addition, the phone also delivers a 3.5-inch touchscreen display that boasts a 480 x 854 pixel resolution and support for 262K colors, as well as a 5-megapixel photo snapper with auto focus and image stabilization capabilities.

Other specs of the new First Else device include WCDMA/HSDPA/ GSM/ GPRS/ EDGE with Quad band 850 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz & 1900 MHz and Tri-band 850 MHz, 1900 MHz & 2100 MHz support, along with Bluetooth connectivity, and Wi-Fi capabilities. A GPS receiver is also present in the package, as well as a 3.5 mm headset jack, and Tilt, Proximity and Light sensors. The new mobile phone comes with a 1450mA battery and measures 13mm x 56.6mm x 115.6 mm.
