xpPhone teased with specs and pictures, makes Windows XP young again



Don't panic, we haven't gone back in time. What we're looking at here is the world's first but still-yet-to-be-released phone that runs on Windows XP, and its Chinese maker has just released some juicy specs and interface images to tease us all. The ITG xpPhone will be blessed with the chutzpah-filled AMD "Super Mobile" CPU, coupled with either 512MB or 1GB RAM. Storage options range from 8GB SSD to 120GB HDD (probably 1.8-inch) and everything in between. While the sheet confirms both GSM and CDMA support, ITG's pre-order page -- which looks more like a newsletter sign-up page at the moment -- is still vague on the phone's availability and price. For now we'll just continue to gaze at the interface pictures until something happens

Sony Ericsson Satio And W995 Wins Best Camera And Music Phone



Swedish mobile magazine Tidningen Mobil has just announced the winners of its Mobilgalan, which is basically a gala party for mobile phones that is held each year, awarding the best in show, so to speak.

Sony Ericsson’s Gustaf Brusewitz and Rikard Skogberg were at the party and could walk back to the company with two awards – the Satio won the award for best camera phone of the year and the W995 won the award for best music phone of the year.

Nokia: Three of our chargers may accidently deliver death by electrocution, please exchange them ASAP



Nokia (NYSE: NOK) just issued a press release asking you to replace your mobile fone’s charger if it is either the AC-3E and AC-3U models, manufactured between June 15, 2009 and August 9, 2009, or the AC-4U model, manufactured between April 13, 2009 and October 25, 2009. These defective chargers are an “electrical shock hazard”. Go to http://chargerexchange.nokia.com for more details.

One crucial figure, the number of chargers that are actually impacted by this recall, wasn’t mentioned. “Only a limited number of chargers of certain model types manufactured by a single third-party supplier during a specific time period are within the scope of the exchange program.” How many units are we looking at here?

Update: IntoMobile reader “FT” left a comment that points to an article published by Reuters with more information. The defective chargers, which are estimated to be around 14 million units, were manufactured by Chinese company BYD. Thanks FT!

Samsung to ditch Symbian, launch fewer Windows Mobile phones?

Not long after Samsung confirmed it’s working on its own Linux-based smartphone OS, we’re now hearing that the world’s second largest phone maker intends to get rid of Symbian, as well as to release fewer Windows Mobile smartphones in the years to come.

According to HMC Investment Securities, Samsung intends to stop making Symbian handsets starting 2011, and reduce the number of WM devices to 20% (from the total number of smartphones) in 2012.

Next year, the South Korean company plans to launch about 10 Android devices (30% of its total number of smartphones), and several devices based on its own smartphone OS. In 2012, 50% of Samsung’s smartphones may run on its own OS.



Samsung reducing the number of WM phones may not be a surprise, but the fact that the company will no longer make Symbian devices is. After all, Samsung is among the Symbian Foundation’s founding members. But I guess that the HMC report might be wrong. We’ll see.

Samsung announces new mobile OS, forgets to mention why anyone would like it



Samsung has just announced a brand spanking new mobile operating system named “Bada”, which is Korean for ocean. They didn’t mention a single feature that makes it stand out, nor did they include screenshots. Bada will be fully unveiled in December at an event in the UK. In a world where we have Android, Symbian, and Windows Mobile available for handset manufactures to use, and to customize, to their heart’s content, Samsung has decided that neither of those three solutions is good enough. Don’t forget that Samsung already does make Android, Symbian and Windows Mobile devices. This company is starting to feel like an unemployed degenerate who goes to clown college to learn how to juggle just so he can pay for his whiskey habit. It’s the fifth week of class, and he mastered juggling 3 balls, but now he wants to jump to 4 for some strange reason. Moral of the story: I hate clowns, and companies that launch press releases filled with fluff.

Update: And in case you’re wondering, Samsung expects the first Bada powered device to launch in 1H 2010, with more models expected in 2H10. Bada will have an application store, launching in 1H10, and will expand to over 30 countries by the end of 2010.

Run PC Applications From Your Mobile With JPC     

A team at the University of Oxford in the UK have developed a x86 PC emulator    . Amazingly, it’s written in Java.  Even more amazing — it works! 

These software products simulate PC hardware and allow you to install another operating system within a virtual machine. Since a virtual machine is a collection of data files, it can be cloned, backed up, or restored. Virtualization is a hot topic within the corporate sector and it provides web developers with a reliable way to test multiple browsers across multiple devices. Even if ease of use and saving money were not issues, virtualization removes the need to cram your office full of hardware!

So why is JPC (the pure Java x86 PC Emulator) different to other emulators?

It is cross-platform
JPC will run on any device that supports Java; Windows, Mac, Linux, and the majority of mobile phones. It will almost certainly run on Google’s Chrome Operating System.


(Note that the iPhone is an exception.    Although it has hardware support for Java, Steve Jobs has stated “Java’s not worth building in. Nobody uses Java anymore      . It’s this big heavyweight ball and chain.”) 

It is secure
The virtual PC runs entirely within the Java sandbox. The emulated hardware is isolated from the real machine and cannot interfere with the underlying OS.

Realistically, this will not happen soon. JPC provide a selection of working DOS games and Linux distributions, but full x86 and Windows compatibility is some way off. Doom is playable, you won’t play it for long.

The number of software layers makes emulation speed an issue. However, the software and hardware will improve — which makes the possibilities very interesting.
