One out of every five phones is a fake

According to a recent statement from Nokia, the giant Finnish mobile phone maker – 20% of the mobile phones on this planet are fakes. Nokia was speaking about how counterfeit phones were hurting their businesses especially in developing countries where the mobile phone market is still in its infant stages. Nokia is probably the most popular handset maker in the whole world, and almost everyone uses or has used a Nokia phone before. It’s no surprise that they are one of the biggest victims of counterfeit. They mentioned that while a lot of the fake phones originated from China, they are found all over the world including Latin America and some parts of Europe. But Nokia aren’t the only victims of this unlawful activity. With handphone factories getting better at forgery; companies like Apple and Motorola that sell popular smartphones, are also being targeted. Since most people have no use for an original phone or can’t tell the difference between the real and the fake thing, they see no sense in spending extra money on an original device – especially in countries that aren’t very well off.

Did Android just become the world’s no. 1 smartphone platform?

A few days ago, we’ve reported that Nokia sold 28.3 million smartphones in the fourth quarter of 2010.

Now Reuters says that, according to Canalys, the number of Android smartphones sold in the same quarter was 32.9 million.

This, of course, means that it has finally happened (now, not next year or in 2014): Symbian is no longer the world’s no. 1 smartphone platform. Google’s Android is.

But this shouldn’t come as a big surprise. After all, important handset makers like Samsung, LG, Motorola, HTC and Sony Ericsson have all embraced Android as one of their platforms of choice. Plus, manufactures like Huawei and ZTE have also started to produce and sell various low-cost Android handsets (according to DigiTimes, shipments of ultra-cheap Androids could reach 25 million units this year).

I don’t think Nokia has what it takes to become no. 1 again, not this year, when its new high-end platform – MeeGo – has little chances to make a great impact (since we don’t even know when the first MeeGo smartphones will be launched). Of course, I may be wrong. Time will tell.

HP unveils the HP Veer and HP Pre 3 webOS smartphones

It’s been a long waiting, but finally the results of the Palm acquisition by HP is bearing fruit. HP just presented the HP Veer and HP Pre 3 smartphones, as well as the HP TouchPad tablet, all running webOS.

It's been almost a year since HP acquired Palm for $1.2 billion and we're finally seeing devices coming out as a result of the acquisition. The “Think Big. Think Small. Think Beyond” tease that HP threw at us is now demystified.

“Think small.” Part of HP’s message materialized in the form of two webOS running devices - the tiny HP Veer and the HP Pre 3.

HP Pre 3

Let’s start with the Pre 2’s successor – the HP Pre 3. The new Pre 3 features a 3.6-inch WVGA capacitive touchscreen with 480x800 pixels of resolution and the usual slide-out QWERTY keyboard. The HP Pre 3 has a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus and a LED flash, plus a 1.3-megapixel front-facing one for video calling.

Under the hood, there’s a screaming 1.4Ghz Snapdragon 8x55 processor and 512MB of RAM. There are 8GB and 16GB storage options, but there still isn't a microSD card slot.

Here's a demo video of the HP Pre 3:

The Pre 3 connectivity is pretty standard with a Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n on board and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR. There’s also a built-in A-GPS module, an accelerometer, a proximity sensor and a light sensors, plus a compass.

So far the Palm Pre 3 is designed to be dual mode phone, meaning it comes with both GSM/HSPA+ and CDMA radios on-board. We guess there will be a GSM-only version further down the road.

HP Veer

Moving on, here's the second smartphone today, the ultra-compact HP Veer. The HP Veer runs webOS 2.2 and packs a slide-out full QWERTY keyboard. It has even managed to fit a gesture area below the screen.

As big as credit card and weighing a smudge over 100 grams, the Veer is rocking a 2.6-inch capacitive multi-touch display with a resolution of 320x400 pixels.

For a device its size the Veer sounds quite powerful. It’s the first ever to use the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 7230 processor ticking at 800Mhz and will rock the amazing 512MB of RAM – the same amount the Palm Pre 2 has!

As connectivity goes, the HP Veer supports HSPA+, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR. unlike the Pre 3, the Veer has only quad-band GSM telephony support, no CDMA here.

The available storage is 8GB. Unfortunately, there's no microSD card slot.

The HP Veer has a 5 megapixel camera on its back, but it's only a fixed focus unit, though it's reportedly of the "enhanced" variety.

Here's a demo video of the HP Veer:

The new WebOS smartphone will have a unique integration with the just announced HP Touchpad tablet. The feature is aptly called Touch-to-Share and allows you to transfer a website, a document, a song, or even a call from the phone to the tablet or vice versa just by putting the phone on top the tablet.

HP plans to release the Veer some time this spring, while the Pre3 will be available in the summer. There's no word about pricing yet.

HP's 9.7-inch TouchPad: webOS 3.0 tablet with 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon, coming this summer

There she is, the HP TouchPad. It's the webOS slate we've been yearning for ever since probing (then) Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein on our first-ever Engadget Show, but sadly, it looks as if HP has yanked any and all Palm labeling from the final product. Introduced today in San Francisco as part of a newfangled webOS triumvirate, the TouchPad (previously known by Topaz) is shaped almost exactly like the iPad. It tips the scales at 1.6 pounds and measures 13.7mm thick, which is somewhat of a downer for those already put off by the heft found in Apple's slate. As we'd heard last month, HP's shipping this one with its own Beats audio engine, Touch-to-Share (a feature that lets users easily transfer a website, document, song, text or call from the phone to the tablet -- or vice versa -- simply by tapping the two devices together) and a huge reliance on the cloud. Also of note, Jon just mentioned that this is only the "first in the webOS TouchPad family," hinting that the Opal may be just around the bend.

Other specifications include webOS 3.0, "true multitasking," Touch-to-share, instant-on productivity, a 9.7-inch display (1024 x 768 screen resolution), a dual-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon CPU (!), inbuilt gyroscope, accelerometer, compass and 16GB / 32GB of internal storage space. There's also a front-facing 1.3 megapixel webcam, support for video calling, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, A-GPS (3G model only), "twice the memory of a Pre 2" and a set of stereo speakers. Rubenstein claims that this here tablet is "screaming fast," and the software UI we're seeing looks downright luscious. There's a new paneled email application a Growl-like pop-up notification system, support for Skype calling, compatibility with Amazon's Kindle e-book store, plenty of cal / email integration courtesy of HP Synergy, a slick virtual keyboard, VPN support, wireless printing as well as Google Docs, QuickOffice, Dropbox and Box.net compatibility. One of the killer features that can't be found on a competing tablet right now is this one's ability to talk to the Pre 3 -- so long as there's a Touchstone involved, one can have their Pre 3 and TouchPad communicate, even piping over notifications and texts from the phone onto the slate. It's a brilliant idea, and we're obviously amped to see just how well it's implemented.

Over on the accessories front, there's a case / stand (which includes a handy flip-out kickstand for desk use), a wireless keyboard (yeah, this one!) and a new Touchstone dock that enables all of the wireless communication magic between webOS devices. If you're curious about specific models, the first out of the gate will be a WiFi only version, with 3G and 4G variants to follow suit in due time. As for the all-important pricing and availability? "Coming this summer," with pricing to be determined "at a later date." Bah, humbug!

Update: Video after the break, and have a look at our hands-on here!
