Intel and Nokia Merge Software Platforms – Calls it Meego

In a significant development in the convergence of communications and computing, Intel Corporation and Nokia are merging their popular Moblin and Maemo software platforms. This will create a unified Linux-based platform that will run on multiple hardware platforms across a wide range of computing devices, including pocketable mobile computers, netbooks, tablets, mediaphones, connected TVs and in-vehicle infotainment systems. Called MeeGo, the open software platform will accelerate industry innovation and time-to-market for a wealth of new Internet-based applications and services and exciting user experiences. MeeGo-based devices from Nokia and other manufacturers are expected to be launched later this year.

This announcement strengthens the Nokia and Intel relationship, and builds on the companies’ broad strategic collaboration announced in June 2009. Intel and Nokia now invite participation in MeeGo from existing Maemo and Moblin global communities and across the communications and computing industries.

“Our vision for seamlessly communicating between computing devices from the home, auto, office or your pocket is taking a big step forward today with the introduction of MeeGo,” said Intel President and CEO Paul Otellini. “This is a foundational step in our evolving relationship with Nokia. The merging of these two important assets into an open source platform is critical toward providing a terrific experience across a variety of devices and gaining cross- industry support.”

“MeeGo will drive an even wider range of Internet computing and communication experiences for consumers, on new types of mobile devices,” said Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, CEO, Nokia. “Through open innovation, MeeGo will create an ecosystem that is second to none, drawing in players from different industries. It will support a range of business models across the value chain, building on the experience and expertise of Nokia, Intel and all those who will join us. Simply put, MeeGo heralds a new era of mobile computing.”

MeeGo blends the best of Maemo with the best of Moblin to create an open platform for multiple processor architectures. MeeGo builds on the capabilities of the Moblin core OS and its support for a wide range of device types and reference user experiences, combined with the momentum of Maemo in the mobile industry and the broadly adopted Qt application and UI framework for software developers.

MeeGo also unites the robust worldwide Maemo and Moblin applications ecosystems and open source communities. For developers, MeeGo extends the range of target device segments for their applications. Using Qt for application development means that they can write applications once and easily deploy them on MeeGo and across other platforms, for example, on Symbian.

The Ovi Store will be the channel to market for apps and content for all Nokia devices, including MeeGo and Symbian-based, with Forum Nokia providing developer support across all Nokia device platforms. The Intel AppUpSM Center will be the path to market for Intel-based MeeGo devices from other device manufacturers, with the Intel® Atom(TM) Developer Program providing support for applications targeting devices in a variety of categories.

The MeeGo software platform, running on high-performance devices, will deliver a range of Internet, computing and communication experiences, with visually rich graphics, multitasking and multimedia capabilities and the best application performance. Since MeeGo runs on multiple device types, people can keep their favorite applications when they change devices, so they are not locked into one kind of device or those from any individual manufacturer.

Windows Mobile 7 interface and device leaked on MWC banners

The eagle-eyed folks of learnbemobile have come across this stupendous leak of Microsoft's forthcoming Windows Mobile 7 OS. It would appear that some last minute alterations were taking place under the covers in Barcelona, though apparently no one bothered to check if there were cameras around before lifting said covers. You can see what appears to be some kind of Xbox Live integration -- which was heavily rumored already -- taking up a corner of what's presumably a new home screen for the OS. There are also big, finger-loving notice icons for calls, text messages, and email, with sections for Facebook, Pictures and "Me" filling out the rest. We don't have any more info than these few shots, and the aforementioned site just has the images camped out on its Facebook page, but it definitely looks to be the real deal. If this is the new face of Windows Mobile, color us excited for today's event -- it looks like a radical departure (or at least a crazy skin). You can check out a few more shots in the gallery below.

SPB Mobile Shell 5.0 debuts with Android, Symbian support
By Donald Melanson posted Feb 15th 2010 4:37PM

We'd already caught a glimpse of it on Toshiba's new TG02 handset, but SPB Software has now gotten fully official with SPB Mobile Shell 5.0, which will be available to consumers and OEMs alike. The big news with this one is that SPB has added support for both Android and Symbian in addition to Windows Mobile, all of which will be able to take advantage of a spiffy new 3D engine and a new "natural interaction engine" that apparently has full multitouch support. Other additions include some 3D widgets, and an array of tightly integrated social networking features, including Twitter, Facebook and Linkedin. Still no indication of a price or release date for the consumer version, unfortunately, nor is there any official word on any other phones that will come with it pre-installed.

Android Market has the greatest percentage of free applications

Distimo is a Dutch analytics company that tracks nothing but app stores. They just gave a special presentation at Mobile World Congress titled “Mobile Application Stores – State Of Play” which highlighed the state of the six largest device manufacturer stores (Apple App Store, BlackBerry App World, Google Android Market, Nokia Ovi Store, Palm App Catalog and Windows Marketplace for Mobile).

The slides from their presentation were placed online (see below) and we can see how Android Market did against the competition.

As expected, the Apple App Store still dwarfs the competition in total size with over 150k applications, but Android is steadily catching up (20k apps). The Android Market has seen an increase in the number of new applications every month since it was opened.

As ReadWriteWeb points out, “Relative to the number of apps housed, Android is actually the fastest growing store.”

When comparing the number of free vs paid apps, Android had the largest share of free downloads (57%). This is likely caused by Google’s openness of the Android Market, which allows casual developers an easy entry (aka all those junk apps). The open source nature of Android also attracts developers who are more willing to give away their work. Finally, Android Market only allows paid apps in 11 countries (vs 77 for Apple App Store).

Some developers have shown a distaste for Google Checkout, but Google is starting to add new payment options.

Looking at the average price of all paid apps, Android Market is in line with the competition. The average price of a paid app in the Android Market is $3.27 vs $3.62 for Apple App Store.

Distimo also suggest that app prices are coming down (Top paid: $0.99), but customers are still willing to pay more for high quality apps (Top grossing: $9.99).

IMGA winners announced, seven of eight go to iPhone games
Labyrinth 2, Wire Way, Bruce Lee Dragon Warrior honoured

The sixth annual International Mobile Gaming Awards have just drawn to a close, with the winners in each category announced.

Of the six different mobile gaming categories, all but one winner was an iPhone title, further demonstrating the Apple handheld's dominance of the pocket gaming arena.

But this doesn't mean they were all line-drawing games. The Real World Game category had some immensely innovative new forms of gaming in there, with Blast Theory's locational game using voice calls, Ulrike and Eamon Compliant, taking the top spot.

"Clearly 2010 has been the year to celebrate the creativity of iPhone developers, and we look forward to how the market for innovative gaming will expand in future," says presenter of the IMGA, Pocket Gamer's own Chris James.

The awesome-looking beat-'em-up Bruce Lee Dragon Warrior nabbed the coveted People's Choice Award, while Excellence in Design went to the children's adaptation of the outstanding iPhone puzzle game Ancient Frog Jr.

Konami's popular DS game Wire Way took the Best Casual Game award for its iPhone adaptation, while the overall winner of the IMGA Grand Prix was Labyrinth 2 from Illusion Labs.

Why Most Current Android Phones Will Never Get Flash 10.1

Flash is coming to Android phones, and for this, some  of you are grateful. So when is it due? For some new handsets, the "first half of this year." But the rest? Probably never.

There are two factors that'll determine whether or not your phone is ready and able to run Flash, whenever it becomes available. First, you'll have to worry about software: As far as we know, Adobe is only planning on supporting Android 2.0 and up, meaning that unless you've got a Droid or Nexus One, you're shit out of luck—unless, of course, your phone gets treated to an upgrade.

But even then! Optimized as it may be, at least some older hardware could have issues running Flash smoothly. Answering a question about a specific phone, Antonio Flores, a man posting on Adobe's support forums who everyone—including a community manager there—seems roundly convinced is a legitimate Adobe employee, says:

"No, the HTC Hero will not be supported b/c it does not have the correct Android OS version and its chipset is not powerful enough. We require a device with an ARM v7 (Cortex) processor. Examples include the Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets and TI OMAP3 series."

That Cortex qualifier could be a killer, too. Even if your G1 was treated to an official Android 2.1 update, there's a good chance it just doesn't have the horsepower. For the time being, this could—again!—be a Droid-and-Nexus-only affair. (Update: To be clear, what we're talking about here is Adobe's full mobile version of Flash 10.1, not HTC's version of Flash Lite.)

Speaking of updates, there's actually a third factor that could screw your phone out of new Flash: The upgrade path. The Palm Pre's webOS 1.4 update helps prep the platform for Flash, but leaves it up to users to download the plugin as an app. On Android, the distribution system looks like it'll be even more dependent on automatic, over-the-air delivery, so if Adobe tells your carrier and handset manufacturer that your handset isn't up to the task, that too could keep you from experiencing the rich and wonderful scope of Ads That Move On The Internet, on your smartphone.

For first and second generation phones, in other words, Flash 10.1 probably isn't coming to Android at all. Sorry?
