Contents

 Features

   PS3, Xbox 360

      'Be A Pro'

The game will have a new feature that will allow you to take control of an individual player for the entire match called "Be-A-Pro" mode.[1] This mode is similar to the Superstar mode on Madden NFL 07 but you can only play as a professional football (or soccer) player and not create your own rookie. This mode challenges you to the real pressures of a football player and in any position - be it attacker or even goal keeper. The mode will play out in pretty much the same way as Madden's did, integral information is unclear at this stage though. [2]

     Gameplay

Most features return from FIFA 07 such as the Manager Mode and the Interactive Leagues. Gameplay has changed though. FIFA 08 now has a new engine that enables players on the team to react to situations around them and make decisons just like in real life. This is called a 35-point decision engine. Other new gameplay features include much improved shooting. After the ball is hit infinite factors now affect the ball; including ball spin, pressure from defenders, player attributes, and even air resistance and air pressure to truly re-create the unpredictable world of shooting a football.[2]

     Wii

The Wii version of the game will contain many exclusive features and a unique gameplay. There will be football related minigames in which Miis will be used. They will have hands, a first amongst Mii related games. The Nunchuk is used to control a player's body, with the analog stick used to control the direction the player moves; the Z button is used for turbo running and to put spin on the ball once it's kicked. The Wii-exclusive "RonaldMiinho" will host a game mode designed and created exclusively for Wii called Footii Party with Ronaldinho. With this mode, Fifa 08 introduces unique party games - including Table Football and Shoot Off – where you can play as your self-created Mii character to unlock Ronaldinho and take on the champ.[3]

     Leagues

FIFA 08 will include 620 licensed teams, 30 leagues (with all 27 leagues from FIFA 07[4]), and more than 15,000 players included. This is 20% more than what featured in FIFA 07.[5] The only new league officially confirmed is the FAI League of Ireland[6] The following leagues have been confirmed for FIFA 08. However, this list below is incomplete as the other two expected new leagues have yet to be officially announced.

 Austria Austrian Bundesliga
 Belgium Belgian Jupiler League
 Brazil Brazilian Campeonato Brasileiro

Interview: What next-gen means for footy

Football games are bigger business than they ever were and with the arrival of all three next generation consoles, we spoke to Andrew Wilson, executive producer of football at EA, to find out what the next-gen can do for football games.

We might be coming to the end of the current football season, but EA and Konami are both busy preparing next season's football games that should be with us in time for the new season kicking off in August/September.

But what will they offer that we haven't seen before? Surely it's not just a case of better graphics and more stats than we actually give a Klaxon about? To find out we grilled - and we do mean grilled - the man almost in charge of FIFA for EA, Andrew Wilson.

What does next-gen really mean for football games?

Andrew Wilson: The thing we saw on current-gen was a lot of limitations with technology and processing power. There were a lot of things we wanted to do on current gen that we wanted to do but couldn't.

Like what?

Wilson: Well the intelligence of the football player and the amounts of levels in which they make decisions. On current-gen they had one or two different levels; so they're in the box, in comes a cross, what do they do next? That's it.

On next-gen machines we can process so much more data. We can run more data in terms of giving them decision-making options about how they come to those decisions.

We're starting to see levels of decision-making options that we never saw before and this will make the game far more realistic. You'll also see less repetition on the field. Our aim is to get 100/200 hours of gameplay where you are constantly seeing different things and different decisions being made even if you're in the same context.

Why haven't we seen this in EA's first two attempts at next-gen football on 360 with FIFA 07 and Road to the World Cup?

Wilson: We launched our new engine for FIFA 07 and that was the first year of a new engine. We saw a few things with the new engine that became the foundation for these new ideas.

We saw a different level of athletic ability in the player, so how the player moved and how they interacted with the ball. We also gave the ball its own level of physics. But we started to see the different levels of decision-making on the pitch with depth and context to what's happening.

The thing with writing artificial intelligence is that once you build the infrastructure you can start building on top of it. And year on year we can build more attributes on top of this.

The World Cup game didn't use that engine, it used an old engine. FIFA 07 was the first and 08 will be the second run of that engine.

We were very happy with where we got to with 07 and the launch of a new engine because they're a risky manoeuvre. If it all goes bad, it's not a great thing for us. The player-ball interaction felt very next-gen and we want to capitalise on that with 08 in terms of animation, AI, physics, decision-making. That will give us a level of gameplay that we've never had.

Are we ever going to see AI in the crowd, so they affect players' performance?

Wilson: We had one of our engineers at GDC who started last year what we termed 'Emotion Engine' which was about building a foundation for driving crowd reaction based on little micro-trends within the game.

So different things happening within the crowd will have an impact on how your team plays on the field. If you're getting booed constantly it will have a mental affect on your performance. We started this last year and we're continuing development of that feature. We don't know where it's going to end up or what it's going to do but if we do a good job, you'll never notice it.

What about in-game commentary where you hear repetition after an hour or two? Can next-gen consoles change this?

Wilson: We ran out of space on the disc with current gen. Last year's FIFA had 26 leagues, 15 thousand players, kits, players, stadiums, audio and music, so you just run out of space. The next-gen discs have got more space so in the short term we will have much more commentary on our games.

Looking long term, these consoles are now online. And I would love to think that we can start to pump dynamic commentary into the game on a weekly basis so you never hear the same thing twice.

But think about competitions. Imagine having commentators popping up to commentate on interactive games. So you're not reliant on commentary from our game anymore you got a gamer who gets online and comments every week instead, who then gets a reputation.

No matter what you ship on the disc you'll never get that depth you want. We want to get people involved and creating. We can start that by offering free stuff to download but it's only a matter of time before players start talking to each other about what's going on on the pitch.

On to the PES / FIFA issue. Do you think you have a good enough football game to beat PES in terms of sales even if you didn't have the licenses you have?

Wilson: I hope so. What we've seen in the last five years is that the market has grown substantially and I believe this is a result of the competition. Both companies are pushing to make betters games every year. We've gone from a market that sold us 2 millions units to a market where we're selling 20 million units and that's a result of the competition.

Yes, there's pressure and yes we want to build the nest game we can. But the reality is the world would be a bad place if here was only one football game. Konami's competition pushes us to be better.

Tell us one thing about FIFA 08 that will be different from others?

Wilson: I can't - not at this point.

Go on, hint it...

Wilson: ...

One element that isn't going to be an annual update...

Wilson: If I'm hinting around things... what we've seen with next-gen consoles is that they spend a lot of time online. And when I look at the future of football gaming, online has to play a very integral part and we don't want to be left behind.

But you held the FIFA Interactive World Cup online. It can't get any bigger than that, can it?

Wilson: Yes it can... Much bigger.

Really?

Wilson: Absolutely.

How?

Wilson: There were three people once uploading videos to the web, now we have YouTube. There were once three people chatting via the internet and now we have Skype. The FIFA Interactive World Cup is a great start but we want to get more people involved than that...

EA Sports Announces FIFA 08 Features
New elements enable players to experience soccer like never before.

posted by Alexis Dunham

US, June 5, 2007 - Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) today revealed the tremendous depth of gameplay features in EA SPORTS FIFA Soccer 08 for Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION3 computer entertainment system which will create a soccer experience that matches the complexity, finesse and beauty of the real-world game. FIFA Soccer 08 challenges players to master the skills required to play like a pro soccer player. Fans around the world can experience the same highs and lows of real-world players and tackle the challenges they face on a daily basis. FIFA Soccer 08 puts you on the pitch to defy the odds, perfect your skills, elevate your game and rise up to win glory for your club.

The FIFA Soccer 08 next-gen gameplay engine, built to maximize the power of Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION 3, delivers animations and ball control that is so responsive you feel like you are actually on the pitch. Players in FIFA Soccer 08 now benefit from A.I. so smart, it features a 35-point decision engine which enables players to process multiple decisions and reactions in real-time. The A.I.'s dynamic 'Threat Map' system captures the excitement and realism of soccer. Players are now aware of their surroundings, reacting authentically to threats and opportunities to make intelligent football decisions.

Now with the FIFA Soccer 08 shooting system you can enjoy even more control and precision in front of the goal to become a true marksman. A true next-generation ball-striking engine calculates shot success by combining an almost infinite number of different contexts, including ball spin, pressure from defenders, player attributes, and even air pressure to recreate the drama and unpredictable nature of shooting.

For the first time ever, fans playing FIFA Soccer 08 will face the pressure to improve their game that real-world players endure every day. A new play mode called Be A Pro locks you in the role of a single player and challenges you to master the same disciplines as a real soccer player—from positioning and tackling to reading the field and passing.

"This year, FIFA Soccer 08 takes its second step into the next-generation. Last year, we kicked off the next-generation by introducing a new engine and stunning ball physics. This year, we are introducing new gameplay, new modes and a new feeling of soccer finesse," said Andrew Wilson, Executive Producer for FIFA Soccer 08. "Be A Pro forces you to think and react like a professional player -- you will experience the whole range of emotions players go through during the course of a game. This feature, along with advancements to our gameplay engine, will deliver on our promise of authentic soccer gameplay."

FIFA Soccer 08 introduces skill moves with a true next-generation organic 'building-block' system enabling you to combine tricks and skill moves together to recreate signature moves from the real-world superstars or define your own style of play. Animations can be interrupted at any time to transition into a new move, enabling you to read and respond to the defence, just like real life. Master the skills to break down the defence, elude your marker and lead your team to victory.

The award-winning Interactive Leagues feature that was first introduced in FIFA Soccer 07, now makes its debut on Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION 3. Represent your club online against your rivals throughout the season in the F.A. Premier League, Bundesliga, French League or Mexican 1st Division. When they play, you play.

"The Interactive Leagues is the most successful online tournament we've had for the FIFA franchise and I am thrilled to bring it into this year's next-gen game. As a Leeds United fan I was pained to see Manchester United win the first Interactive Premier League last season. However, I'm looking forward to redressing the balance this year through FIFA Soccer 08," said Joe Booth, Producer for FIFA Soccer 08 on Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION 3. "One of my favourite things about Interactive Leagues is how it connects me and the development team with the FIFA gamers via our weekly in-game podcast. We have just broken the one million downloads mark and it's been a fantastic way to interact with other fans, share experiences and answer questions."

In addition, FIFA Soccer 08 is dramatically more real and exhilarating with the inclusion of 620 licensed teams, 30 leagues, and more than 15,000 players making it 20% larger than FIFA Soccer 07 on current generation formats.

FIFA Soccer 08 is developed by EA Canada in Vancouver, B.C. It is scheduled for worldwide release this autumn on the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, the PLAYSTATION 3 computer entertainment system, the PlayStation¿2 computer entertainment system, Wii, Nintendo DS, PSP (PlayStation Portable) system, PC and mobile. EA will reveal the specific features available in the PlayStation2 computer entertainment system, Wii, Nintendo DS, PSP system, PC and mobile versions in the coming weeks.

FIFA 08 First Look
With more than 600 teams, skill moves and the new Be a Pro mode, EA finally puts its best foot forward.

by Jonathan Miller

June 1, 2007 - Joe Booth has a dream.

The FIFA 08 next-gen producer imagines an EA virtual world cup, online, 11 on 11, featuring the best videogame soccer players on the planet. Coinciding with the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, each gamer will grab a player and, with 10 friends, begin a soccer assault on the rest of the planet. Right now it's just a dream, a goal for the future of FIFA online, but it all starts with Be a Pro in FIFA 08.

We sat down with Booth and his team at EA Canada to get our first look at FIFA 08 and the new Be a Pro mode. Booth, a native of England, was decked out in his finest Leeds United jersey and made an exciting announcement: FIFA 08 on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 will feature 30 leagues, 620 teams and about 15,000 players.

Not only is that a record for FIFA -- Booth worked on the excellent FIFA 07 on current gen that featured only a whopping 27 leagues -- but that's more teams than every other EA Sports title combined. In short, Leeds United is back. But what about EA's soccer franchise?

Well, let's say you want to take control of Leeds striker David Healy. And by take control, we mean complete control. In the new Be a Pro mode, you select any player from a squad and control him the entire match in what is almost like a third-person soccer game. The new camera system will zoom in and out to continually frame your player, the ball and the goal. If Healy is zipping up the field on a breakaway, the camera will zoom in and shake, just like the Gears of War embedded journalist cam.

As you play, you'll receiver a number of visual prompts to indicate if you are out of position, where you should run to into space, if you're offside. And even if you're not playing with a game-changing superstar like Ronaldinho, you are still rewarded by how well you play your position. Of course, if you're simply bored, you can pause the game and switch to a more exciting player at any time. The most popular position at EA so far is central midfielder. It's great to score with a striker, but attacking midfielders are always in on the action and it's just as fun to create a goal with a slick pass.

Keep in mind that Be a Pro isn't like Madden's Superstar mode with a soccer ball. You aren't creating a player and following his career on the way to the FIFA hall of fame. Be a Pro is simply a new way to play on the virtual pitch -- and a nice thought since innovation in soccer games has become pretty much stagnant.

Still, Be a Pro isn't a replacement for the 11-on-11 action that we have come to know and love. It's great to play as your favorite player but nothing is better than creating an amazing goal with your favorite team. So when Booth and his team took the next-gen reins, they made a long list of improvements that needed to be made. First on the list was shooting.

We got a chance to crack a few shots from distance and the difference in shooting is immediately noticeable. Long shot specialists like Steven Gerrard will finally be weapons in FIFA, thanks to a dynamic shooting meter and the FIFA physics system introduced in 07. When you're in perfect position, the power meter will slowly increase as you hold the shot button. When you let go, you'll rip a powerful shot that has a great chance of being on goal (rather than on the lap of a player's wife in the seventh row).

Shots will become more difficult to hit based on a number of conditions. Has the ball just bounced? Is it rolling toward or away from the player? How fast is the player running? Is it his off foot? Not only will this increase the speed of the shot meter, but the ball will also take some wild trajectories depending on just how far off center your shot is. Moral of the story? Work for a good shot. Thankfully, you'll have some extra tools at your disposal to do so.

When you hit the slow-pace button, you will now have an arsenal of skill moves available. Cristiano Ronaldo will dazzle you with step-overs. Ronaldinho will embarrass you with the flip flap. Watch out for feints, spins and the rainbow. All of these will be accessible on the right stick while running at slow pace. At regular speed, the knock-the-ball-into-space move mapped to the right stick will return, which we don't like because it doesn't work.

Visually, FIFA 08 will run at 60 frames per second and it also utilizes a fancy animation system similar to what you've seen in Madden 08 and NBA Street Homecourt. Basically, animations blend smoothly together so you can run in and out of motions without being trapped in one animation. It's still very early and EA has yet to tack on that extra visual polish, but the build we saw looked very similar to FIFA 07.

In terms of modes, EA is holding off details on Manager Mode and online for now, although we have one delicious nugget for you. Interactive Leagues will make their 360 and PS3 debut. Pick your favorite team. When it plays, you play. EA will tally all the wins and losses and declare a winner. EA also hinted at traditional online leagues with your buddies, but we'll have to wait and see.

Until then, be sure to check out our interview with Ronaldinho on location at a motion-capture session in Barcelona. We've also got an exclusive photo gallery of international soccer stars Andreas Ivanschitz, Tranquillo Barnetta, Miroslav Klose, and Sergio Ramos. Finally, check out IGN Weekly on Friday night as we take you behind the scenes of FIFA 08 to bring you a real-time motion capture session with Ronaldinho and company. Time to lace up your boots.

Fifa 08 Cover Stars Announced

Ronaldinho headlines a lineup that includes some of football's modern stars

EA SPORTS today announced that two-time FIFA World Player of the Year Ronaldinho will headline a global lineup of superstar athletes to be featured on the front packs of FIFA Football 08, the next chapter in the internationally acclaimed videogame franchise from EA SPORTS that will be available this Fall for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, PSP, Nintendo DS, PC, mobile and will appear for the first time on the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system and Wii.

The spotlight will shine on FC Barcelona's world-class midfielder Ronaldinho who will be the center-piece of FIFA Football 08 global packaging and marketing campaigns. Selected FIFA World Player 2004 and 2005, and a finalist last season, Ronaldinho will take his place on FIFA Football 08 covers alongside star players from other select teams in countries around the world.

Ronaldinho will join 2006 FIFA World Cup™ Golden Boot winner Miroslav Klose of Werder Bremen on packaging in Germany, rising star Sergio Ramos of Real Madrid on the cover in Spain, attacking midfielder and captain of the Austrian national team Andreas Ivanschitz of Panathinaikos FC on the cover in Austria, and Swiss national Tranquillo Barnetta of Bayer Leverkusen on front packaging in Switzerland. Midfielder Florent Malouda of Olympique Lyonnais and winger Frank Ribery of Olympique Marseille will be paired with Ronaldinho on covers in France. The athletes appearing on the cover of FIFA Football 08 in North America and the United Kingdom will be revealed next month.

EA also revealed that many of the players who will be appearing on its FIFA Football 08 covers are participating in state-of-the-art body motion capture today at a private facility in Barcelona, Spain. Cover stars Ronaldinho, Klose, Ramos, Barnetta, and Ivanschitz are being motion captured today for the EA SPORTS FIFA videogame development team. The body movements, individual moves and playing style of each athlete is being captured, digitized and will become the life-like movement of the virtual players in future versions of EA's FIFA Football games.

"We are proud to call some of the world's best football athletes our partners. The access, guidance and insight they give us means that FIFA Football 08 will create a next gen experience that not only looks authentic, but that captures the emotion, finesse and beauty of the game," said Joe Booth, senior producer for FIFA Football 08. "Through sessions like today, and the continued investment in our next gen football engine, our world-class development team continues to revolutionize the authentic gameplay experience."

"Ronaldinho and all the FIFA Football 08 cover stars bring a passion for the sport that is raw and true. They enjoy helping us bring that real-world experience into the game," said Matt Bilbey, International Director, EA SPORTS. "Their expert skills, commitment to success and passion for football inspire our development team and help us make FIFA Football 08 the most natural-feeling football videogame in the world."
