After this morning's training session and ahead of Saturday's Serie A clash with Siena, Roberto Mancini answered questions from the press in his pre-match news conference:

Mancini: Adriano is not among the players called up. How is he?
"The back problem he had the other day has got worse. He couldn't train yesterday or today, so he will rest."

You face Siena in the championship then there's the Champions League clash with Bayern in Munich. Is the championship match more important?
"The game against Siena is definitely important. After that we will start thinking about the Champions League from Monday, but the match against Bayern Munich is important too because if we finish first in the group we will have the chance to play the round of sixteen return leg at home. So we will try to win, but for the moment our minds are on Siena."

Inter have collected many consecutive victories. Is it increasingly important not to stop this run?
"It would be perfect if it didn't stop. We will try and win because it would keep our lead intact. It is important to do well tomorrow, but it won't be easy. It will be a match like those against Reggina or Catania. Siena are a tough side who played a great game against Fiorentina last Sunday. We will have to be focused to do well and the best Inter will be needed."

How much does playing in the Champions League distract you from the championship?
"I don't think it distracts us; it's a pleasure to play in the Champions League. It might be a bit harder further on in the championship when you have to play every three days. But we are hoping the Champions League 'distracts' us until the end."

Are you envious of Roma in any way?
"No. Roma are a great team with great players, and I think they are at the same level as Inter. They have players with different characteristics to ours, I have respect for all of them because they make up a really great team. But I am happy to be the coach of Inter. I believe that Inter, Roma and also Palermo will fight it out until the end."

Is there anything in particular you would like as a Christmas present from the club?
"Nothing in particular."

Is it right to say that Mancini has never had the team under control like in these past two months?
"When you win it always seems like things are going better than when the results aren't coming. I don't think there's ever a time when everything is under control; there is always something missing. And I also think that in times of difficulty a coach can still have the situation under control even if something is missing."

BURDISSO, CRESPO GOALS SINK SIENA

MILAN - Nicolas Burdisso and Hernan Crespo scored in either half as Inter dominated Siena at the Meazza to win 2-0, collect their eleventh consecutive victory and increase their lead at the top of the Serie A table to seven points ahead of tonight's Olimpico clash between second-placed Roma and Atalanta.

Burdisso, who scored twice against Messina in the cup last Wednesday, gave Inter an early lead on 11 minutes, stealing in at the near post to power home an unstoppable header from Stankovic's left-wing corner.

A sluggish Siena woke up towards the end of the first half and carved out two meaningful chances on goal, with Julio Cesar making good saves from Locatelli and Brevi.

Inter's Brazilian keeper pulled off more heroics early in the second half with a splendid one-handed penalty save from Mario Frick after Maicon was adjudged to have brought down Antonini in the box.

Crespo added to Inter's lead on 54 minutes, beating Gastaldello to a Brevi back pass and lifting the ball over Manninger with a deft touch to notch his eighth goal of the season, including his Super Cup effort against Roma.

Inter had a penalty claim turned down in stoppage time when Luis Figo was sent crashing to the ground following an aerial duel with Konko.

JULIO CESAR: "A WONDERFUL PERIOD"

APPIANO GENTILE - Julio Cesar was one of the protagonists of Inter's 2-0 victory over Siena with a vital penalty save from Mario Frick early in the second half. After Sunday morning's training session, Inter's Brazilian goalkeeper answered questions from the press in a news conference:

Julio Cesar: this is perhaps the best period of your career. Can you explain your great form?
"I have had other good periods in my career, but this is certainly the best since I have been in Italy. I feel the confidence of everyone. It's a wonderful period for all of us at Inter. I am very pleased and I hope to continue like this until the end of the season."

Do you think it is better to play regularly and keep the tension high?
"You gain more confidence when there's a series of matches. When you play a good match and make important saves, like at the end of the game against Spartak Moscow in Milan, you gain more and more confidence. I hope it continues like this, the team also gains confidence when they look behind and see the goalkeeper is doing well."

What is your opinion of the recent improvement in the Inter defence?
"I'm pleased for all of us who play at the back; it's very nice when you play a match without conceding goals. However, you can also let in goals in football, so you mustn't be judged on this alone. The defence has improved along with the whole team."

There have been rumours for some time now about Inter's interest in Gianluigi Buffon. What do you think about this?
"I respect everyone's opinion. Inter are a big club and can buy whoever they want. I respect Buffon for what he has done this year: he won the World Cup and is doing very well with Juventus now. But I believe in myself, I know I have the ability to help Inter. Mancini has great confidence in me and my work, and proof of this is the fact that he made me a regular as soon as I arrived here. I have to try to do well until the end of the season and I hope we can win the Scudetto; if I continue like this I can make the club change its mind. But it shouldn't worry me if Inter are interested in Buffon, Peruzzi or other goalkeepers."

Have you ever saved two penalties in a row like you have done this year against Ascoli and Siena?
" Stankovic asked me the same question. I replied that it was the first time; let's hope I save the next one as well...(smiles)"

Would you have given the Ballon d'Or to Buffon?
"He certainly deserved it for what he did at the World Cup, but Cannavaro deserved it, too. He might have won it if he had saved a penalty in the final."
