MANCINI: "LAZIO TOUGH OPPONENT"

APPIANO GENTILE - Part one of Roberto Mancini's pre-Inter v Lazio news conference:

Mancini, the match against Lazio is very important for the race for second place. Is this your goal in the championship?
"Exactly. We have to get back in second place. The match against Lazio will be as hard as the one against Sampdoria. Lazio play well and they have started winning again. They're in a good position in the table and we will have to sweat to win all three points."

Have you already decided your team for tomorrow?
"Not yet. There could still be a few changes, but none in particular."

How is Juan Sebastian Veron?
"He's fine and he will play tomorrow."

How is Obafemi Martins?
"He's calm. He's a player who perhaps doesn't do that well in one match then does very well in the next one. He's an unpredictable player who is capable of doing anything."

How influential will Dejan Stankovic's absence through suspension be?
" Stankovic had been on a caution for a while, we knew that sooner or later the disqualification would arrive. But we have various options, like Kily González, Cesar or Figo on the left."

Will Adriano start in attack or could he go on the bench?
"Adrianon is improving a lot now. But with so many matches to play there will clearly be a time when he sits out a match. It's important for everyone to have their chance to stay in form because we could need them at any time. So they must all have the chance to play so they can stay in form. I don't think Adriano will go on the bench against Lazio. He's improving all the time and he has done well in the last two matches. He missed a penalty on Tuesday and this perhaps affected him as the game went on. But apart from the goal he didn't score against Ajax, I'm pleased with the fact that he manages to get the ball and make strong runs forward, like he's used to doing."

Dr Moratti, any news about the renewal of Alvaro Recoba's contract?
"No appointment has been made with anyone for the contract renewal. There will be at the right time."

Do you believe Recoba is a useful player for the club? Because yesterday the player asked if he was still useful for Inter.
"There will be an agreement with him, with the coach. Recoba is an excellent player who does what he has to do in the playing time he's given. So we will see whether we find an agreement for his contract."

So is a renewal still far off?
"It's neither close nor remote. We will reach an agreement with him at the right time."

Adriano? Everyone is expecting more from him...
"I'm also expecting more, because he's serious. He's certainly working to improve. We know his potential, which will emerge sooner or later."

What does he still lack?
"I think he has reacted, he has trained more. Things don't always go in the best way for you. He's missing exactly what he is, for the potential he can show."

They say Inter are very interested in Henry. Can you tell us anything?
"No, I can't say anything because I don't know if there's all this interest. He's certainly a very good player, but right now we are following the current situation, which means that we are trying to do well in all the competitions we're involved in: second place in the championship, the Tim Cup, and most of all the Champions League. I think that the rest, including what I read and hear about Ronaldo in the papers and on television distracts everyone from the things we should be focusing on now. I'm the one who's thinking about it the least."

Inter's game has come together again. Is this positive?
"This is very important, but I think Inter have always done well this year."
