Oleguer injures hand again   



During Tuesday training, Oleguer took a knock to his third metacarpian bone in his left hand and needed immediate treatment. He has a fracture and will be visited this afternoon by doctor Xavier Mir.
The Catalan did not take part in the final training session before departing for Valencia. Oleguer took a knock to his third metacarpian bone in his left hand and needed immediate treatment.

The Club Medical Services have announced that: “the X-ray made this morning has revealed that he has fractured the third metacarpian. He will be visited this afternoon by specialist doctor Xavier Mir, who did the original surgery on the hand, and who will decide on the appropriate treatment”.

Injured on February 9

Oleguer Presas first injured his hand in the match against Sevilla on February 9. Four days after that the defender received surgery on the third metacarpian bone in his left hand. A month later on March 13, he was given the medical all-clear.

Ronaldinjo ne putuje u Valensiju



Fudbaler Barselone Ronaldinjo neće igrati utakmicu sa Valensijom u polufinalu Kupa kralja, saopštio je danas njegov klub. Brazilac je propustio meč sa Almerijom (2:2) prošle subote, a tada je trener Frank Rajkard rekao da je Ronaldinjo povređen. Posle snimanja primicača desne noge, klupski lekari su konstatovali da se ne radi o povredi, već da postoje "medicinski problemi". Niko od zvaničnika kluba nije želeo da komentariše da li je eventualni razlog Ronaldinjovog neigranja i neslaganje sa trenerom.

Ronaldinjo je posle pauze početkom nedelje ponovo trenirao sa ekipom, ali je na treningu u ponedeljak prisustvovao svega šest minuta.

U tim će se na meču protiv Valensije nakon povrede vratiti Jaja Ture.

King of the Cup in Mestalla



It is ten year since Barça beat Mallorca in Mestalla to become the club who has won the Copa del Rey on most occasions with 24 titles. As such, Valencia’s ground is one that brings back fond memories for the Catalans.

Mestalla is, aside from being a difficult ground to visit, a stadium that harbours fond memories for Barça, especially in the context of the knock out competition. It was at Valencia’s ground that FC Barcelona won their 24th Copa del Rey in the season 1997/98, proclaiming the title of ‘King of the Cup’.

An exciting final

On the 29th of April 1998 Barça and Mallorca came out on to the field at Mestalla to contest the Copa del Rey Final. The Balearic side, thanks to some great play down the left from Amato and a finish from Stankovic, had the ball in the net in the 7th minute to open the scoring in Valencia. Héctor Cúper’s side stayed ahead for 60 minutes until Rivaldo levelled the scores finishing off a pass from Giovanni inside the six yard box. Even though Mallorca were down to 9 men thanks to two red cards, the game remained level after 90 minutes. In extra time, despite having a numerical advantage, Louis Van Gaal’s side could not make it count.

Victory on penaties

The time came for the game to be decided via the lottery of penalties. The tension was palpable in Mestalla with Ruud Hesp for Barça and Carlos Roa for Mallorca the two goalkeepers involved. The Dutchman made the decisive save in the shoot out from former Barça player Eskurza. That stop gave Van Gaal’s team the victory after a grand total of 16 penalties. That day in Mestalla Barça went into the history books as triple champions as they had already won the European Super Cup and the League, and they were able to claim themselves ‘King of the Cup’.

Return to Mestalla

Ten years later the blaugranes return to Mestalla once again in the Cup. This time it is not in the final itself, nevertheless, Barça will be playing for a place in this season’s final at a ground at which they became the club with the best record in the competition, an honour that no-one has yet taken from them.

Everybody knows how important the game is”



Frank Rijkaard feels the side is well focussed on the cup semi final. He also said that Ronaldinho, who is still not fully fit, was left out as a precautionary measure.
Barça face Valencia in the cup semi finals on Thursday. “Everybody knows how important the game is. We have to qualify and present a good image of ourselves”, said Frank Rijkaard in his pre-match press conference. He said “the 1-1 in the first leg means we are going to have to get a goal, play well and be well organised”.

Good mentality

Rijkaard feels his men “have a good mentality for doing that … We have to show that we are better”. He also feels that criticism “is a part of the job … All of the players are committed to the team.” On Valencia, he said “the y will approach the game in a similar way to the way they approached the game at the Camp Nou”.

Protection for Ronnie

There has been a lot of talk about the absence of Ronaldinho. Frank Rijkaard explained that “today was the first day he has trained with the team for several days. He wanted to play but we left him out as a precautionary measure … I have no doubts about the player, and although he has problems, he wants to play … My idea is always to defend the players. I see no need to draw conclusions anywhere other than in the dressing room”.

A qualified squad

But it is not just Ronaldinho. Rijkaard knows that “unfortunately the team is used to playing with important players missing. They are ready.” He is also delighted to see how injured players like Márquez and Giovani are progressing, and soon “they will be able to rejoin the group.” The Dutchman said that both Mexicans were able to train today at the Camp Nou, but in isolation from their team mates.

Ticket to the final up for grabs in Mestalla



Barça face Valencia tonight (Barça TV, PPV and Radio Barça) in the return leg of the semi-final of the Cup. Following the 1-1 draw in the first leg, Barça must score to qualify.

Valencia and Barça are both looking for a place in the final of the King's Cup tonight, where they will face Getafe, who knocked Racing out in the other semi-final. The game in Mestalla could prove decisive for the future of both clubs. Rijkaard's side could be the only team left fighting on three fronts, the Champions League, the Spanish league and the King's Cup, while the Cup is the only possibility of silverware for Koeman's side.

Touré Yaya returns

Reaching the final would also be a boost to morale for Barça, who go into the game with only one point from their last three league games. Rijkaard can call on two of the nine absentees from the game against Almería, namely Touré Yaya and Zambrotta, who was suspended. On the other hand, the Dutchman loses Oleguer, who is injured, and he would prefer not to play Ronaldinho, who has only managed to train once this week.

Must score

The 1-1 draw in the first leg leaves things very open but, at the same time, means Barça must score if they are to reach the final, something they haven't done now for ten years. Despite their long absence from the final, Barça, with 24 titles, continue to be the kings of the Cup. On their way to a 25th title they have eliminated Alcoyano, Seville (current cup holders) and Villarreal.

Valencia - all or nothing

If the game is important for the outcome of Barça's season, then it could be said that for Valencia it's a case of life or death. The side run by ex-Barça players Ronald Koeman and José Mari Bakero, are 11th in the league, nine points off a UEFA place, and were eliminated from the Champions League in the group stage. The Cup has been something of a comforting distraction for the club which, in only a few months, has seen the departure of its president, its manager (Quique Sánchez Flores) and three players being ostracized (Cañizares, Albelda and Angulo). Only a title could leave a good taste in the mouth after such a turbulent season.
