18-man squad for Villarreal



Frank Rijkaard has named an 18-man squad for the visit of Villarreal to Camp Nou on Sunday evening. Touré Yaya has been given the green light to be included.
The Blaugrana coach has called up 18 players to his squad for the visit of the Yellow Submarine. Touré Yaya made it in after being doubtful during the week when he reported some pain in his back and was given a specific training programme to carry out. The Ivory Coast player trained on Saturday with no problems and was named in the squad.

Puyol and Messi out

The players that were in the side that played Celtic in midweek, but are not included this weekend are Carles Puyol, who is suspended, and Lionel messi, who is injured. The Argentinian has already begun his recovery programme as he looks to return from a torn muscle in his thigh. These two players add their names to the other injured players that include Rafa Márquez, Albert Jorquera, Oleguer Presas and Santi Ezquerro.

Two players that have returned to the squad after missing the Celtic game are Giovani Dos Santos, who was rested in midweek, and Gaby Milito, who was suffering from a high fever. Edmílson came into replace the defender late on.

Touré and Bojan return

The main changes in the squad from the last league outing against Atlético de Madrid last Saturday are that Touré Yaya and Bojan Krkic return and Puyol and Messi are out.

Trio share 32 goals



Ronaldinho, Thierry Henry and Samuel Eto'o have scored 42.6 per cent of FC Barcelona's goals this season. A high figure for just three players that will be asked to lead the team's attack in the absence of Lionel Messi.
The injury to the Argentinian means that Barça will have to play their next few games without their most effective player, as the has netted 15 goals already this season. Nevertheless, Frank Rijkaard does have Ronaldinho, Henry and Eto'o available and between them they have scored 32 goals, which amounts to a 42.6 per cent of the team's goals in the league, Champions League and Copa del Rey.

Henry top scorer

Of the trio, Henry has the most goals as he has scored 13 goals; seven in the league, three in the Champions League and three more in the Copa del Rey. Eto'o has scored ten goals, with nine in the league and one in Europe while Ronaldinho has nine goals with eight in the league and one in the Champions League.

All areas

The Blaugrana's capacity for scoring goals is strengthened if the fact that 15 players have scored this season in all competitions is taken into consideration. Also, it should be recognised that the goals have come from all areas of the pitch with the defenders, midfielders and forwards all netting to help Barça each the current tally of 75 goals.

Xavi has seven

Xavi Hernández is the perfect example of other players scoring. The playmaker has seven goals in the league, Champions League and Copa del Rey, most of which have proved to be decisive, and he has become only the second player in the squad to score in all three competitions.

Therefore, despite the size of the hole that Messi leaves, FC Barcelona do have enough strength-in-depth to continue scoring and ensuring that the forward's absence is not noticed to greatly.

Barça return to league action, but without Messi. The injury that the Argentinian suffered to the femoral bicep in his leg has been a setback for Blaugrana as they head into the final phase of the campaign without one of their most talented players.


The team, howver, believes that they can beat Villarreal and they want to dedicate the victory to their teammates, who has been affected both physically and psychologically. The statistics favour Barcelona. In nine games in which Messi has been out this season, Barça have only lost one game (against Real Madrid).

Without the young forward, the Blaugrana defeated Sevilla in the Copa del Rey and beat Mallorca and Murcia in the league and, two year ago, won the Champions League. On Friday, Gianluca Zambrotta assured that the team is now looking towards winning all three competitions and when Messi returns he can be decisive in helping.

A difficult match

The road to success starts today against Villarreal in a game that is always difficult for Frank Rijkaard's side. The visitors are third in the league and face a Barça side with several injuries. Apart from Messi, the Dutch coach will be unable to call upon the services of Carles Puyol, who is suspended, nor Rafa Márquez, who is still injured. But Gaby Milito and Touré Yaya are are back in the squad as the central defender has recovered from teh fever that saw him miss the Celtic game, while the Ivory Coast midfielder has overcome some back pain in order to be ready.

Despite the absence of Messi, Barça have an enviable forward line. The Blaugrana and Villarreal have scored 94 league goals between them and Ronaldinho, Samuel Eto'o, Thierry Henry, Nihat and Giuseppe Rossi have scord 45 of those between them. Both teams have a similar principle of scoring more than the opposition. When they met in the Copa del Rey quarters finals, the nature of the knockout event ensured that the game was more cagey than it is expected to be on Sunday and that cost Villarreal a place in the semis.

The opponent

On Sunday though, Villarreal will look to play their natural offensive game, that saw them win 3-1 in El Madrigal, even though they have Ángel out through suspension and Cani and Josico are both injured. Manuel Pellegrini can be pleased about the fact that Rossi and Pascal Cygan are back and Joan Capdevila and Gonzalo Rodríguez have both overcome knocks after being doubtful in midweek.

Back to work 



The first team got back to work after taking a holiday on Thursday. Milito is over his fever, but Touré had to leave the training session at La Masia before the end.
Frank Rijkaard’s side are now working on Sunday’s home fixture against Villarreal (21.00). 19 players took part in training at Masia, including Gaby Milito. The Argentinian defender trained normally after missing the Champions League game with Celtic due to a fever.

Touré off early

After warm-ups and drills, Touré Yaya left La Masia, while the other players practiced passing in pairs. They then divided into two groups to work on circuits involving one-twos and shots on goal.

Game to end

The physical bit over, the players then enjoyed a game. In orange there were Edmílson, Gudjohnsen, Bojan, Thuram, Iniesta, Abidal, Zambrotta and Eto'o, who faced the bib-less Milito, Giovani, Ronaldinho, Deco, Xavi, Sylvinho, Puyol and Henry. The bib-less team won 3-1
