44,000 professional footballers voted for the 2006-07 FIFPro XI, with the results perhaps unsurprising in many ways.

FIFPro, the players' union, asked global professionals to select 11 players from a list of 55 in order to determine the ideal starting eleven from the last season of professional football.

Suitably enough, players working in Spain, Italy and England utterly dominated proceedings, with four currently based in La Liga, three in Serie A and four in the English Premiership.

The team was selected by base position only - goalkeeper, defender, midfielder or attacker - and with no regard to the player's preferred side or foot. As such, the rather imbalanced lineup appears as follows (clubs given from 06/07 season):

                 Nesta (AC Milan), Cannavaro (Real Madrid), Terry (Chelsea), Puyol (Barcelona)

                     Cristiano Ronaldo (Man Und.), Kaka (AC Milan), Steven Gerrard (L`pool)

Gianluigi Buffon received his award for FIFPro's most voted goalkeeper in mid-October, with other awards being given as time permitted.

Today, the Barcelona trio collected their own trophies, sparking renewed interest in the XI. Seven other Barca names were shortlisted but failed to make the cut.

The unrelated Ballon d'Or prize for World Footballer of the Year is set to be awarded shortly, with Kaka hot favourite to win.

Lahm, who celebrates his birthday on November 11, has no doubt about where his first choice would be, and he thinks that he could be the ideal replacement for Gianluca Zambrotta at FC Barcelona.

Stating that he is still a bit young to move, the full-back is keen to make his intentions known and set up a transfer in the next couple of years.

"I would love to continue my career with Barça because, like Chelsea or Real Madrid, they are a team that allow you to grow," he told Bild.

"I am 24 very soon now and I think that an ideal age to join a big foreign club is when you are 25 or 26. When you are 29 it is maybe too late."
