Henry Equals Platini's Goalscoring Record  

A routine win over the Faroe Islands may not be much to shout about for France, but today had historical significance for one player in particular: Thierry Henry. The Barcelona forward's early striker in Torshavn made him France's joint-top all time goalscorer, alongside Michel Platini...


Thierry Henry made it 41 goals for France in 95 appearances today, equalling Michel Platini's goalscoring record, if not his ratio.

The current UEFA president, and former France legend, bagged his 41 strikes in just 72 appearances but, nonetheless, Henry is delighted to be France's joint-number one hitman of all time.

"It's extraordinary to join a player like him [Platini] because his name carried the dreams of all of France," Henry told TF1 after his side's 6-0 victory in the Faroe Islands on Saturday.

Henry grabbed his team's second goal just seconds after Nicolas Anelka had opened the scoring for the visitors early in the first half, Henry's record achievement being wrapped up early on.

Later in the game, young Lyon striker Karim Benzema was to overshadow his more illustrious and experienced teammates with a two-goal display that was made all the more impressive for the fact that he played only the latter 45 minutes.

Henry declared himself pleased with both Benzema and his Lyon teammate Hatem Ben Arfa, himself a late goalscorer for France. "We have some great youth now," he smiled.

Henry, 30, is set to become France's all-time leading goalscorer soon, perhaps even as early as Wednesday as Les Bleus welcome Lithuania to Paris.

Should he make it 42 out of 73, his record would almost certainly stand for years to come. Of the other top-ranking French strikers, only one - David Trezeguet - is still active as a player.

What's more, David's international future lies in peril after a public bust-up with coach Raymond Domenech over his being dropped for these Euro 2008 qualifying clashes.

Messi On Awards, Barca, And Pichichi 

Lionel Messi was his usual humble self when quizzed on a variety of issues.


The FIFA World Player of the Year and the Ballon d'Or are both awards he is being mentioned in relation with, but the Argentine was unwilling to talk himself up.

"I do not feel I am a star or anything special," he told Sport. "Obviously, it would be great to get the recognition, but I am not thinking about that.

"My thoughts, for now, are on the national team."

Asked about his form for Barcelona, having scored eight goals over the last four weeks, he was again pretty calm.

"I don't know if this is the best in my career yet," he responded. "What I do know is that I want to learn, to improve, to grow further. There is a long road ahead of me."

On Barcelona's upturn in fortunes, he said: "I think we can achieve some impotant things, because we have our confidence back, and because we have players with a lot of quality."

Finally, he laughed off his chances of winning the race for the Pichichi title, one he is leading at the moment.

"I certainly did not imagine to be leading the race having scored so many goals, but it feels great. Maybe they are all going in now and they will all go out later. However, I am calm beacuse we are working as a team."

Barça And Madrid Chase Argentine 'Whiz' 

FC Barcelona, Real Madrid and Sevilla are set to do battle to secure the services of 14-year-old whizzkid Mauro Icardi as he is set to become a free agent in the summer.


The Spanish giants, along with Valencia, Deportivo and Espanyol, are keeping tabs on the highly-rated Argentinian youngster who also holds an Italian passport.

Currently playing for Canary Islands-based Vecindario, Icardi has spent a week at Camp Nou being shown what life is like at Barça, but Madrid are also in the running.

"We are talking about a player that could create history if he carries on evolving in the same manner," Madrid's South American scout, Sixto Alfonso said.

Icardi's father, Juan Carlos, is remaining calm and has no plans to disrupt his son's education by making a rash decision over his future.

"We are staying here until the summer," he said of plans to remain with Vecindario.

"The boy has to go to school and we do not want him to suddenly be broken up from his group of friends.

"We will see later on what will happen. We have not committed to anyone."

During his five years in Spain, Icardi has netted over 400 goals, a record that has attracted the biggest names in the game.

Barcelona Will Have to Sell Ronaldinho

 Super-agent Ernesto Bronzetti believes that Barcelona will be forced into selling Ronaldinho to Chelsea.

Having signed Henk Ten Cate, speculation is rife that Chelsea will now make a big splash for Barcelona star Ronaldinho.

The Brazilian has returned to the first team, but has yet to be offered the new contract he wants.

Having gained Spanish citizenship, he will also come under Spanish taxation laws, which is what Ernesto Bronzetti believes will be the final straw.

"If he is to stay at Barcelona, he will have to pay 45-46 per cent as he will return to normal taxation for Spain," he said.

"As he will be due a new contract, it will be high time for Barcelona to sell."

Milan have also been interested in him, and in fact made a couple of attempts this summer.

However, they are in no position to match Roman Abramovich's spending power, with price expected to hit the 80 million euro.
