Amid the surrounding darkness gathering around Shrewsbury’s brand new New Meadow stadium, Daggers boss John Still could be seen in the away team dug-out talking earnestly and straight-forwardly to young midfielder Solomon Taiwo.

For the young midfielder, his second League start in a Daggers shirt had ended in exactly the same way as his first, with a straight red card for a reckless tackle.

Manager Still knew it was a situation that had to be addressed immediately. What was said was clearly a matter between manager and player, but boss Still made it abundantly clear what he felt the effect of Taiwo’s dismissal had on the end result here, in his after-match press conference. Fielding a quarter of his regular back four, Jon Boardman withdrew on the morning of the game with a tight hamstring, Still felt that his makeshift side were doing okay at the time of the sending off, holding Shrewsbury to 0-0 and clearly having taken the sting out of a first 20 minute assault staged by the Midlanders.

“There is no doubt in my mind that Solomon’s dismissal changed the game. I felt even with an understrength side we were doing okay and could take something from the game. But you can’t afford to play long stretches of games at this level with 10 men and it was very difficult for us in the last 35 minutes here.

“I had no arguments with the sending-off. It was reckless and has left me pretty annoyed. My last words to the team before going out for the second-half was ‘no silly challenges’.

Minutes after Taiwo’s dismissal, Daggers were further depleted. Shane Huke, filling in at full-back, had slipped going into a challenge on Shrews’ dangerous midfielder Ben Davies, conceded a foul, but had also taken a nasty blow to his ribs. He continued after treatment for 10 minutes, but then had to be replaced by young full-back Anthony Cook, for his League debut.

Unfortunately Cook suffered something of a torrid time in his half-hour on the field, Shrewsbury stretching their lead from 1-0 to a final scoreline of 4-0.

The rout began with Taiwo’s sending-off, which proved a double punishment. Not only did Daggers lose their young midfielder, but from the resulting free-kick, Davies cleverly lifted his kick over the wall and beyond Tony Roberts into the top corner.

Davies was also the marksman as it became 2-0 in 68 minutes. There was a suspicion of offside in the build-up, but when Magnus Okounghae headed clear to the right of the goal, no one could dispute the quality of Davies’ splendidly struck half-volley that flew past Roberts into the opposite corner.

Two became three on 76 minutes when Shrewsbury substitute Mark Pugh scored with his first touch after left-sided midfielder Marc Tierney got the better of Cook to put over a tempting cross that Pugh headed in from six yards.

The home pair returned the compliment to each other four minutes later, Pugh sent away down the middle, got the better of Anwar Uddin and crossed to the back post when Tierney got above Cook to send his header into the far corner.

Even in the closing minutes, Tony Roberts had to be alert to keep out a well-hit 30 yarder from another home substitute Neil Ashton and beat away an effort from Ben Herd.

The veteran keeper was just about the only Daggers player to emerge from this game with reputation in tact. He made an excellent first minute save to turn away a close-in header from home captain Stewart Drummond and then foiled another Drummond effort and a shot from Michael Symes.

But after weathering the storm, although only troubling home keeper Glyn Garner with a Glen Southam goal-bound stab that the keeper stopped on the line, the final whistle couldn’t come soon enough for Daggers once Taiwo went off!

Jason Puncheon's hat-trick helped Barnet see off London rivals Dagenham & Redbridge at Underhill, despite playing the entire second half with 10 men.

Puncheon put them ahead from the spot after he was fouled by Marlon Patterson but Ismail Yakubu saw red for a second booking in first-half stoppage time.

Adam Birchall fed Puncheon to double the Bees' lead just after the break.

He completed his hat-trick with an left-foot drive, before Shane Huke grabbed a late Daggers consolation.

Striker Ben Strevens netted a brace as struggling Dagenham secured a much-needed victory and condemn Bury to their fifth consecutive league defeat.

The Daggers began impressively, with lively midfielder Sam Saunders going close twice in the first eight minutes.

Saunders was rewarded when his right-wing cross found Strevens unmarked to head home the opener.

And Strevens tapped in after home keeper Jim Provett dropped a Saunders cross at his feet six yards out.
