Alisher Usmanov 'dreams' of taking total control at Arsenal

Russian billionaire has 30% stake in club but no seat on board
Usmanov backs Wenger and calls Van Persie sale 'a mistake'

Alisher Usmanov has said it is still his dream to own Arsenal and has given the under-fire Arsène Wenger his full backing. The Russian billionaire already owns a 30% stake in the club but has no seat on the board and has been frozen out by the majority shareholder, Stan Kroenke.

In a rare interview, Usmanov told CNBC: "I want to take this opportunity to just reaffirm that in order to help the team, we would be ready to buy more shares, to buy control, to buy all shares. It is my dream to have a controlling stake of Arsenal. I would never instruct the chief executive, and I would ask if they need my help.

"If I had a big stake in Arsenal of course I would have my opinion of what we must do, for example on the commercial side. I think there are also many questions about the management of Arsenal's commercial activity. We will see and we will wait. Maybe one day I will wake up and have control of Arsenal."

Usmanov said it was a mistake to sell Robin van Persie to Manchester United in the summer and added if he had more involvement in the club he would back the manager in the transfer market.

"Today less, but over the last five years he has not had enough support to provide his conceptions of his game in Arsenal from the board, either for transfers or for keeping players etc. We are ready to do all that we can in order to help the company, in order to consider any form of cooperation or ownership with the team.

"This decision [losing Van Persie] was a mistake. If I am one of Wenger's players I would want to stay for the finish, but he explained Robin wanted to go to win trophies."

Asked about his influence in the transfer window, Usmanov said: "I never interfere with things over which I have no control, this question [about buying players] is for Wenger. I never ever give instruction to chief executive of my plans I only ask you need my help or not."

Theo Walcott owes us after Arsenal gambled on him, says Arsène Wenger

Arsène Wenger said yesterday that Theo Walcott owes Arsenal a debt after the club took a "gamble" on him.

Arsenal spent £5m on the 16-year-old Walcott from Southampton in 2006 and he has made 238 appearances for them. As negotiations over a new contract drag on, Wenger said that Walcott owes them for giving him a chance ahead of more experienced players, weakening the team in the process.

"I believe what is important to keep the young players together is that at some stage I have stood up for them," Wenger said yesterday. "'I played you at 17, 18, 19 years of age and I know I took a gamble.' It is easier to take a player of 25 and put him in the team. You know what you are getting."

"If you put them in at 17 or 18, you have to stand up for them. You know you risk losing games while they are learning their job. Once you have produced them, you want to say, 'Okay, let's stay together and win together.'"

Having invested in the future by picking Walcott for years, Wenger believes Arsenal are entitled to a return on that in the form of loyalty. "I am happy to pay Theo the money he deserves," Wenger said. "But I feel as well that I bought him at 17 years of age and spent a lot of money on him. I am a big supporter and I believe he is happy here. He has always looked to me like he is an Arsenal man."

"Somewhere along the line they need to give back to the club what the club has given to them. After when a guy gets to 30, you can understand it is his last contract and if he feels he wants a change, I can understand that. This is a more sensitive age, but basically, it is a reward for our policy."

Wenger was speaking the day after the confirmation that five of the Arsenal's young British players, including Jack Wilshere, had signed new contracts. Wenger believes that after losing several key foreign players, he will have more chance of keeping a British generation.

"When [Cesc] Fabregas says to me, 'I want to go back to Barcelona,' it is difficult for me to say, 'No, why should you?' He is from Barcelona. He has been educated there. In that sense it is easier with the English players. They feel at home."

Robin van Persie, though, left Arsenal without returning home. He went to Manchester United instead. But Wenger said that was the ambition of an older player, and Walcott's case was different: "[Van Persie] was 29. Theo is 23. I believe it is important we keep him."

Alisher Usmanov, who has a stake of just under 30 per cent in Arsenal but is not on the club's board yesterday said that Wenger had not had enough support from the directors.

The Uzbek billionaire questioned Arsenal's financial strategy in a television interview with CNBC. "For example, on the commercial side, I think there are also many questions about the effectiveness of the commercial management of Arsenal," he said.

"Mr Wenger is one of the best coaches in the world. During the last five years he hasn't had enough support to provide his conceptions of his game from the board. This decision [selling Van Persie] was a mistake. If I was one of Wenger's players I would want to stay for the finish, but he explained Robin wanted to go to win trophies."

Шта да се ради, у оваквој ситуацији сада када је Арсенал никада лошији треба да будемо срећни како смо се довукли до треће позиције. Smile

Reading Set to Complete £4m Deal to Sign Arsenal Winger Andrei Arshavin

READING FC have stepped up their pursuit of out-of-favour Arsenal midfielder Andrey Arshavin.

The 31-year-old Russian has been a peripheral figure at the Emirates this season and reports claim he is close to moving to Berkshire in a deal worth around £4m.

Zenit St Petersburg and Fulham have also been linked with the midfielder but it appears Reading will win the bidding battle when the transfer window opens on January 1.

This is a move that may well suit all parties but will not have been one anyone could have predicted four years ago.

Andrei Arshavin was lauded as one of the top talents in Europe following his exploits at the Euro 2008 finals and a few months later he secured a £15m move to join Arsenal where his career should then have progressed ever upwards. However this never quite occurred.

The 31 year old winger has been a disappointment for much of his four years at the Emirates Stadium, save for a four goal haul at Liverpool and a goal against Barcelona, and now Arsene Wenger is ready to call time on Arshavin’s Gunners career.

Arshavin will be hoping to re-ignite his career at the Madejski Stadium and owner Anton Zingarevich will look to the former Zenit man to provide the impetus his side needs to help boost their chances of securing Premier League survival.

Reading currently sit bottom of the Premier League after a run of seven straight defeats.

Arsenal Agree £7.5m Deal to Sign Newcastle United Striker Demba Ba In First Week of January

Arsene Wenger looks set to complete the £7.5m signing of Newcastle United striker Demba Ba early next month. The Arsenal manager is reportedly closing in on the Senegal international signing having given up his pursuit of Schalke forward Klaas-Jan Huntlelaar.

The Gunners boss will meet the 27 year old’s much publicized release clause and offer the Magpies striker a deal said to be in the region of £100k a week. Arsenal are set to beat off interest from other prospective suitors and have been greatly aided in their pursuit of the French born forward due to his keenness to play under revered boss Wenger.

French source Canal+ had seemingly let the ‘cat out of the bag’ earlier this week about a likely move to the Emirates Stadium for the Newcastle United marksman but Alan Pardew has attempted to calm talk of such a switch with key matches against Man United & Arsenal to deal with before the transfer window re-opens on January 1st.

However a deal is seemingly done but is being kept under wraps until a move has been formally agreed by both clubs.

Arsene Wenger has been promised a significant level of transfer funding to help the club secure at the very least, a top four finish this term. That is an ambition that has been aided in recent weeks by something of a return to form and though the Arsenal boss does have funds necessary to launch big money moves he is still said to prefer to avoid wasteful needless levels of spending, not least as he is not known for bringing in players in the January transfer window.

Therefore a move to bring in a player of Ba’s proven Premier League quality for a bargain price is proving too good an opportunity to pass up. Interest in the former West Ham man is also helped by the fact that the powerful forward is eligible for Champions League action this season, this too is said to be a big reason as to why the Newcastle United man is keen on a move to the North London club, having never plied his trade in Europe’s premier cup competition.

Demba Ba hasn’t let unsettling talk of his St James’ Park future affect his form this season. Though Pardew’s side are struggling to retain the form that led to a top five finish last term the in-form striker has scored 11 goals from 17 Premier League starts. In his first season in the North-East he managed to net 16 despite being used in a supporting role for half of the campaign following the arrival of compatriot Papiss Cisse.

Arsene Wenger is keen to beef up his attacking options as he has been overly reliant on Olivier Giroud as the spearhead of his Arsenal attack. Though Theo Walcott has proven effective in his preferred striking role over the past couple of fixtures the Emirates Stadium boss realises he needs a more natural fit to fill the role and sees predatory finisher Demba Ba as the ideal man for the job, not least because previous top target Huntelaar has opted to sign a new Schalke contract in recent days.
