Theo Walcott spends night in hospital

Theo Walcott will play no part in Tuesday's World Cup qualifier against Poland after being ruled out with a chest injury.

Walcott was injured in the opening minutes of Friday's 5-0 Group H qualifying victory over San Marino after a collision with goalkeeper Aldo Simoncini.

He seemed to be struggling to breathe normally and was accompanied to a hospital by the England team doctor Ian Beasley and kept in overnight for observation.

"The Arsenal forward was taken to hospital following a collision with the San Marino goalkeeper on Friday night, he was monitored overnight as a precaution and following scan results today will return to his club for further treatment," the Football Association said in a statement.

The FA did not say exactly what the scan results showed.

Walcott had lengthy treatment on the pitch before being replaced by Aaron Lennon after the challenge, which angered England manager Roy Hodgson.

"If I described it as reckless I would be being kind," Hodgson said. "It was a very fierce challenge although I don't think for one minute there was any malice in it when he went for the ball. Irrespective of that it was a very bad challenge.

"When your goalkeeper does that you are very lucky to still have him on the field and not to have a penalty given against him. It did put a dampener on the evening."

Captain Wayne Rooney and Manchester United teammate Danny Welbeck both netted twice with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scoring his first senior England goal.

The other good news for Hodgson was that Ukraine, which held England to a draw at Wembley last month, could only draw in Moldova, where England has already won 5-0.

"We go to Poland with a good strong squad with some players who will be quite fresh because they did not take the field," Hodgson said. "The one negative was Theo, that was a bad injury."

Hodgson, however, refused to call for San Marino, the joint-worst team in FIFA's world rankings, to be excluded from football's top tournaments.

Since becoming a member of FIFA in 1990, San Marino has won just once, against Liechtenstein in 2004.

"It's up to UEFA and FIFA to decide which countries they allow into their tournaments," he said. "San Marino have been in the Euros and World Cup for a good many years.

"I don't think we can accuse them of playing a dirty game of football, there weren't too many vicious fouls in the game, unfortunately there was one and that was the one that bothers us, but I wouldn't want to go as far as to say they shouldn't be allowed in the competition."

You'll miss me when I'm gone: Wenger has a pop back at grumbling Gooners

Arsene Wenger has hit back at the fierce criticism of fans fearing another trophyless season.

Following shocking performances in defeats to Norwich and Schalke in the past week Wenger faced the wrath of fans at the club's annual general meeting on Thursday.

After seven years without any silverware, Wenger insisted: “We want first to win the Premier League, that is what we are here for and that is what we want to fight for - believe me will give absolutely every drop of energy to achieve that and will do that again this year.

“It is still important that we keep our strength and stay united for the good of Arsenal, sometimes you can forget that.”

And the club’s majority shareholder Stan Kroenke claimed he will always put trophies before cash.

Kroenke hit back after shareholders quizzed him over whether he would take any dividends out of the club after the Glazers were accused of loading debt onto Manchester United.

But US tycoon Kroenke has never taken dividends out of any of his sports teams - which include NFL side St Louis Rams and NBA basketball’s Denver Nuggets - in the States and he insists he is at Arsenal to win silverware.

Kroenke said: “I am ambitious for the club and we all share the same goal. The reason I am involved in sport is to win. It’s what it’s all about. Everything else is a footnote.

“I can assure you no-one is more ambitious than me. Arsenal is a tremendous club with a track record of consistent performance at the top level.

“That is very rare but we have managed it. I know that will continue as we move forwards. We have an exciting future and our goal is to win trophies.”

But disgruntled Arsenal fans were told by Wenger that fourth place in the league beats winning the FA Cup in modern football.

Kroenke, chairman Peter Hill-Wood and chief executive Ivan Gazidis all came under heavy fire in front of around 1,000 supporters at the Emirates.

But Wenger tried to appease shareholders by claiming that finishing fourth is a bigger achievement than winning the world’s oldest cup.

Many of the loyalists are older fans, who remember open-top bus parades around Islington and still appreciate winning the FA Cup and League Cup.

But Wenger said: “For me, there are five trophies – the first is to win the Premier League, the second is to win the Champions League, the third is to qualify for the Champions League, the fourth is to win the FA Cup and the fifth is to win the League Cup.

“I say that because if you want to attract the best players, they do not ask ‘Did you win the League Cup?’, they ask you ‘Do you play in the Champions League?’”

And Wenger could not resist a dig at the unrest, warning: “If everybody is absolutely devastated when we finish third in the league, I promise you I will not be here if you finish 15th one day.”

That was a clear message of “you’ll miss me when I’m gone” and, even though most of the anger was directed at the board, it is clear some of the fans have had enough of the direction and philosophy of the club.

Gazidis claimed there was more money to spend on transfers than Wenger has chosen to use in recent summers, but the manager said: “My job is to deliver a team with the resources we have, and I have never complained about that.

"I want a club to pay players from its own resources, there is no shame in that."

At last year's AGM, it was Wenger’s rallying cry and Churchillian speech that saved the day.

Tweleve months on, after another season without a trophy, Arsenal fans were even more restless - high ticket prices, not competing in the transfer market with the Manchester clubs or Chelsea, and successive bad defeats to Norwich and Schalke in the days before the AGM.

The timing could not have been worse.

One of the supporters’ groups, the Black Scarf Movement, put up a ‘greed’ banner outside the entrance to the meeting and handed out leaflets.

But Kroenke was spared that as he arrived in a mini-bus hired to ferry the board from the club’s offices to an underground car park.

However, Kroenke and Gazidis were not shielded from the unrest.

In fact, the supporters’ frustrations were only heightened – thanks to one of their own board members.

Old Etonian Hill-Wood’s dismissive and patronising approach to fans who pay thousands to support their team went down particularly badly as he thanked them for “their interest in our affairs.”

They would rightly point out it is their club, thank you very much.

That sort of comment sparked annoyance and when members of the board were re-elected never before have so many hands been raised by shareholders against the motion.

Kroenke was shouted down when he claimed he had engaged with fans, while Gazidis was openly challenged as supporters descended towards open revolt.

Gazidis said the club’s ambition was shared by everyone including Kroenke and the board which was “an ambition that’s all about football.

“To compete at the very top of the game here and in Europe, to win trophies, and to do this in a way that makes our fans proud, in a way that reflects our values and our way of playing football. In a way that protects and promotes Arsenal for the long term.”

Tim Payton, of the Arsenal Supporters’ Trust, said: “Peter Hill-Wood is a great custodian and has served Arsenal for many years. It’s probably past the time when he should be chairing an AGM of revenues around £300million.

“But he should be a life president and some of his answers are not what you’d expect.

“Fourth place is really important in modern football. The problem is that if you are Manchester United or Chelsea and fighting for the title then putting that title over the Capital One Cup makes sense.

“But when you’re Arsenal, you’re not fighting for the title. In effect, you’re fighting for fourth place or the Capital One Cup and that can be a bit demoralising.”
